Idzik will go BPA for the first few rounds, which is exactly what he did last year and why he drafted Richardson last year. Once he gets to third/4th rounds then he starts looking to fill needs. I expect their 2nd round pick to also be BPA, which might be a receiver because its a deep draft class at WR, but it could be anything, except that I think he'd probably shy away from DL given how deep the jets are at DL.

What is it with people insisting on this BPA nonsense? There was no need to upgrade the secondary??? AYFKM?

Secondary was the unit most in need of attention. Despite the preference of most fans that they go wideout, they addressed need first.

I don't get the idea that people think BPA doesn't have a percentage of need factored into it when teams are formulating their draft boards.

The more I see this guy, the more I realize what he's bringing to the table that we've been missing on Rex's defense for a while now.

Tight end coverage - hopefully. Turnover potential - maybe. Size, athleticism, blah, blah, blah...You could argue that Dennard or Dix had some or all of these things too, but we left them on the board because Pryor's got something on them that we need:

    Rage.

Wilk, Q, Sheldon, even Harris are all great talents, but they have that sort of "gentle giant" quality to them. Pryor, by contrast, plays like every dude he's about to go up against just called his mother a whore. That's not something you can teach, and it's something that, when backed up, is totally infectious across your whole D.

With any luck that translates to the pros flawlessly, and Rex gets a replacement for not Allen, Jarrett, or even Landry, but for Bart fucking Scott.

johnnysd posted this a not long ago and I thought it was a great explanation by Bill Polian on how teams formulate BPA on their boards, think it bears repeating:

He reminds me of Bob Sanders before the injuries ended his career. A little (healthy) LaRon Landry as well in there. And he has Rex and Ed Reed to learn from. This is a good pick.

Which is what we have always said..BPA is a misnomer as it is actually BPA from among your needs.

I love Cooks, but he is a Kerley clone.

I''m not sure if I'd call it a misnomer, I just think people oversimplify the concept way too much.

Was there a need to upgrade the defensive line last year when they drafted Richardson in the first round? I don't think anyone would have said that safety was the jets biggest need or even a particularly significant need. Lots of articles, etc., talking about jets need WRs, TEs, CBs and OG. I can't remember a single article talking about the Jets having holes at safety. To say the secondary was the unit most in need of attention misses the point that the broad general perception was that the jets needed a CB to replace chromartie, not a safety. They took Pryor because according to Idzik's board he was BPA.

He also happens to be a tremendous fit for the Jets because, if you watch the clips, he was often playing free safety and some of his best shots on the ball carrier/receiver were with him flying in from deep in the secondary. He and AA, will make a very nice safety tandem and it will allow AA to be an in the box safety/SS, which is really his position. Moreover, he was used all over the place - as a blitzer, as a FS, as a SS, and even in certain alignments he looked to be playing linebacker. He's the kind of player Rex loves and can get the most out of. He's Eric Smith with first round talent.

We beat the Saints last year. Idzik comes from the team that went from crap to winning the superbowl by beating another "offensive juggernaut". The Saints have a system built around their QB and that's their identity. It's not ours. Stupid post.

Cromartie was horrible last year. If you watched our games you would realize this.

Yeah, but the fans without football knowledge are more interested in names and past performances then they are in actual good players. They wanted to us to pick Johnny football for fucks sake. Overpay for Revis, keep a declining Cromartie, overpay for DeSean Jackson. Because their NAMES. Names that casual (dumb) fans know.

Yes, they think just best player and do not take in to account needs. Green Bay, Carolina, Seattle, etc wouldn't take a QB with their first pick even if that had the highest mark on their board (which it wouldn't) because they have no need for one right now.

This is a great pic! This kid can really play and we needed a Saftey. All of you that hate this pick probably have never seen him play...... I mean I heard from someone he's Eric Smith with dreadlocks? That's the dumbest thing I've heard in a while! The draft isn't over! We will get a Playmaker to help the offense! Some of you guys need to change your tampon and take a midol!

Calvin Pryor #NYJPick Personnel man noted- He arrives in a nasty mood as a blizter. Charlie Strong nicknamed him "Linebacker"

    Adam Schein ‏@AdamSchein 12h
I like Pryor a lot. He was my second choice for Jets, as I said on @SNYtv tonight. But Cooks was ideal fit.
