Every once in a while I like to pull out my FO Homer hat, and this is one of those moments. Howard was a decent RT, but am I the only one who thought he was if anything getting worse toward the end of the season? On this one I think Idzik and his people wanted Howard to stay but only below a certain number. I know and completely agree that you have to overpay often enough in FA to get who you need, but Howard, while decent, was nothing special. Sounds like hte new guy will be an adequate replacement, and here I will freely give credit to Idzik for filling the hole fairly quickly. Okay, now i am going to put that hat away.
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN 2m New Jets right tackle Breno Giacomini's deal with the Jets is for 4 years, per source. #nyj Good signing, tough guy who will help us for sure... Graded out about the same as howard did and hey, he was good enough to start for the champs.
The ratings and lists are relatively meaningless. The pundits who publish them don't have to shell out any $ dinero. What teams are willing to offer a guy shows a what a guy's true perceived value is, not what some writers with no skin in the game think. Seattle basically made no effort to re-sign the guy. There was no market for him. Even the Jets disagree with whatever FA rankings are out there, as Giaco was clearly their fallback option.
Oversimplification. Geno Smith behind Seattle's line last year would have taken a beating. Russell Wilson was running for his life much of the time on pass plays. How much of that can be rightfully pinned on Giaco I can't say. I know they had a slew of injuries. But they also have a pro bowl C and LT.
There's very few leaks regarding the Jets in free agency, all we know so far is that it is a 4 year deal but no numbers yet.
Just saw this. thank you for the in-depth review. Always cool to have a fan's perspective who's seen the guy throughout the year.
Tom Pelissero @TomPelissero 22m OT Breno Giacomini's deal with #Jets is 4 years, $18M, with $7M fully gtd. Gets $4.5M this year. Has playtime/Pro Bowl escalators in 2016/17
Howard got paid $2,023,000 last year and Howard will be paid $4,500,000 this year. How is that a fraction of the price? Edit: OK. My bad. Just saw that Howard got signed for $6M per.
http://overthecap.com/cap.php?Name=Breno Giacomini&Position=RT&Team=Jets 2.6 million cap hit this year (presumably the rest is for a signing bonus), about 5 mill the next 3 with cap savings available as early as next year. this is the kind of deal I was thinking Howard deserved, but I'm glad to see Idzik held firm and gave a abetter value to a player not too far off from that.
I love Giacommini's comments regarding the Pats. He's going to make the rivalry more fun. Maybe there'll be a fight. lol
sorry but we have not seen Campbell play yet except in preseason. He was changing from a DT to an OG. Did you want an all-pro immediately? How did you get so much inside info? The other guy was a OT in college. Winters was also an LT in college and had to learn as he played. I think its too soon to call these guys failures( suck).
didn't you here? All rookies are who they are as rookies and THATS IT. if a player struggles for whatever reason after having a solid 4 months to prepare for the NFL, they'll suck forever.
Just comparing this to the deal Oher just signed with the Titans - 4 years, $20 million deal that includes $9.5 million guaranteed. So similar-ish numbers. Also if you look at what Howard signed for - 5 years, $30 million overall and $15 million guaranteed, its clear that the Raider overpaid (though I did see something about them wanting him to play LT which would explain the wages a bit).
