This kid just feels like an injury problem waiting to happen. Crazy you get the 13th pick and then use 9th to replace a proven star... This is the end of Rex Ryan era after this year.
Then for his sake he had better play like Revis. Woody I'm sure isn't gonna go thru the same bullshit twice.
Actually quite the opposite. RR is signed through 2014 and its clear from this draft that Ryan is very likely to get a contract extension. Every player can get injured - its football. Revis missed last season due to injury. Dee has never missed a game and the Jets have reviewed his entire medical history and he's had physicals all prior to even considering taking him at 9.
I don't know how to post up videos but watching him on Sport Science was really really intriguing. His athleticism is uncanny and shows he certainly has the potential to be a beast in the league for years to come. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rQ81bZV7TY
Yup I saw that right after the draft. Ironic that his athletic abilities were compared to Al-Cro-Traz in the Sports Science video. He looks like he plays more physically than Cro (press and tackling), which could lead to big things for him in a Rex Ryan defense.
He definitely has potential, but you can have all the physical attributes or athleticism in the world and still bust. Let's just hope he is the cerebral player Revis was and studies his ass off.
I feel like we're blessed to have moved Revis along with his contract coming off an ACL injury while not only freeing up a boat load of team salary cap but also featuring a pro-bowl type of CB talent in Antonio Cromartie. Not only that, but the more I think about our draft the more I enjoy the fact we drafted the Nation's number one corner back coming out of college. Three first rounder's in Cromartie, Milliner and Wilson. Moral of the story is we could be worse off than what we currently are. Before Revis became one of the greatest Jet players of all-time he first had to be selected during the first round. Only time will tell as in every rookie that's ever been drafted but I could never complain about drafting hands down the Nation's number one CB after moving an NFL icon in Revis.
Well, with Milliner and Richardson, we now have three CB's who were first rounders and three DL's who were first rounders. That is momentous. Add to that Brick and Mangold, and we are loaded at some key positions. The only problem is that none of those guys really handle the ball too often.
And don't forget that had it not been for his legal issues Ellis would very likely have been drafted in the firsts round. (edit) Mike Mayock had been on record before the legal issues came to light that there was "no way Ellis would slide out of the first round".
Actually when he's been on the field he's been pretty good, problem is staying on the field. NT's don't wrack up a lot of stats. Now in 2012 he wracked up an apparent small total of 18 tackles. Bust? but he only was on the field for 21.97% of the defensive snaps, or just a little more than 1 in 5 plays. He missed 6 weeks of the season with an MCL sprain and had trouble staying on the field after his return. But back to the 18 tackles as a NT. Take a stud like Kris Jenkins, who's widely acknowledged as being one of the better NT's of the last 15 years, his career best tackls was 50 playing in most of the snaps. Sione, who Ellis will likely replace as starter, only had 29 tackles in about 30% of the snaps. Suh last year had 35 tackles. Wilfork 48, but he's generally didn't play NT, neither did Suh technically. But when you watched Ellis on the field, when healthy, he was pushing the pocket and moving blockers so LB's and Safeties had space. aka he was doing what a NT should do.
I hope you're right. I know that the Jets considered NT to be an area of weakness before the draft, though the Richardson pick strengthens the line as a whole. Ellis is a good athlete and hopefully he can stay healthy and emerge.
I wasn't impressed by his highlight videos. He doesn't look fast. And I don't trust corners who play for teams with dominating defensive fronts. Give me a good corner who plays for a team that can't sack the QB. It's easy to play CB when the QB is always running for his life. At #9? I just hope I'm totally wrong about this.
Before passing judgment type "Milliner vs" into Youtube instead and watch him on every passing play in games back to back. He looks like a very complete, smart player that has all of the measurables to excel at the next level. He has good hips, great athleticism and reach, and a nose for the ball. He even shows a knack for Revis' unrivaled ability to get a hand on the receiver at a key moment without drawing PI but doing just enough to shift the positioning into his favor to get his hand on the ball with freaky reflexes/athleticism and break up a pass. Chances are he'll never turn into the completely dominant shutdown interception machine that Revis was/is at his peak, but with a little luck Milliner could develop into the next best thing realistically. The team couldn't viably retain Revis' services all things considered, and Idzik was able to swing the salary decision into the top prospect at the same position as severance.
