I disagree. Pass attempts on successive plays to Cumby, Stacy and Owazu in the red zone was not playing to the strength of the Jets. I also think Gailey had to have been involved in some of the questionable calls like playiing out the clock at the end of the first half, and conservative calls like the FG on the 2. They also did not adjust to NE's playing to swat Fitz's passes.
how exactly is an offensive coordinator supposed to adjust to NE lineman swatting Fitzpatrick's passes? I ask this seriously. Call only passes away from the defensive line? I understand pass protections call for opening up a passing lane but as we saw a)the offensive line wasn't doing a very good job of that and b) the defensive lineman were doing a good job putting their hands in the passing lane even when the lane was open... what exactly could Gailey himself had done to counter that? isn't that mostly about execution/ the QB physically?
It's also the 2nd down play to alligator arm Cumberland on the sideline. That was a DUMB play. They were down 3 at the time, you call plays to your "PLAYMAKERS" not some dumb ass TE that can't catch and not a sideline pass that Fitz really can't make. Then you follow that dumb play with an even dumber deep pass to Smith. I thought they gave on up that crap after week 2 when the first 6 or 7 passes to Smith weren't completed because Smith can't get separation and Fitz just can't throw the ball far. Meanwhile on that same 3rd down play other guys are wide open. They get lucky and recover the on-side only to do the one thing you absolutely CANNOT do with no timeouts, they threw it over the middle. HUH??? Even if Marshall gets set it leaves 1 sec on the clock for a hail mary pass that we all know Fitz isn't capable of making. You can't go into a game against the Pats and let your OC a brain cramp at the most critical time of the game.
The problem is they don't have a good blocking TE to help guard Ninkovich so you have to scheme around him, move the pocket away from him or bring in a b/u OL as a blocking TE. The real answer should have come in the off-season. Get a real blocking TE. For all the good Mac has done he just doesn't understand how important an extra blocker is for protection.
I agree with this mostly, although again I don't know what role Gailey has in NOT having a decent TE, since he's well known for not being a big fan of TE's.
they threw that pass across the middle at the end hoping they would get up there and spike it because that was their only chance. A 37 yard pass to end zone Fitzpatrick has a better chance of completing. A 49 yard pass, Fitzpatrick has slim to no chance at completing. They couldn't hit the deep sideline route because obviously NE was taking that away. They aren't stupid. It was obvious we'd like the ideal play. If they called for a deep sideline route no matter what and it was picked off because NE was just sitting and waiting for that route then would Gailey be a dumb coordinator because he didn't try to complete a pass over the middle quickly where no one was? also- whether they completed one across the middle and spiked it or completed a deep pass at the sideline they were only getting 2 plays MAX anyway. so what difference does it make how they get to the 37 yard line? Marshall gets back like he should've and they'd been fine for a shot at the win. Criticize the playcalling on plays where we aren't in utter desperation fine, but in this instance he was up shit's creek with only 1 fucked up paddle and you are pissed
If you have 6'4" Brandon Marshall who is known as the guy that can go up and get the ball you get him the ball on the sideline and let him fight to get out of bounds or draw a flag if the defender is draped all over him. I think if they do that they get 3 plays in, not guaranteed but I'd rather take my chances with that then a middle of the field pass and deep hail mary from Fitz.
no way they were getting 3 plays with a completion. (provided the completion was more than 5 yards anyway). I honestly was surprised they didn't go right to the end zone on the first play. A couple chances at a hail mary I would've been fine with. There was only 13 seconds man. anyway, whatever I guess. you can wish they did something differently there but realize you are bitching about something that had about a 2% chance of ending well anyway
