How long till you stop treating this kid like a 5 year old? Rex seems way to concerned about not "hurting his feelings". He played like shit...tell him. Pull his ass if you have to. Parcells would have been knee deep in his ass on the sideline Sunday. I dont like the way he looks like someone fucked his girlfriend when hes having a shit game. One thing I always liked about Penny was his attitude on the sideline. If he threw a pick he was the first one walking up and down the sideline rallying the troops to go out and get the next one. Anyone who has played a team sport at any level will tell you...when your team is getting knocked around and your "leader" looks like he wants to cry its not inspiring.
Chad Fans here who know what I think of him will be surprised to hear me agree with your second paragraph. While Mark at least can throw the out pass 20 yards down field with accuracy, a imo minimum capability for an NFL Qb, and Chad could not, he would not mope too much. But I think you are a bit harsh on the first point. I think Sanchez knows perfectly well how he played.
What do you want him to teach everyone how to dougie on the sideline while they're down 35-3 and the Pats are driving?
Yeah, I totally agree. Me and my dad were talking about it this morning. It's pretty amazing that Clemens isn't at least ahead of Brunell on the depth Chart. To me, Brunell is there to Mentor Sanchez, not to play. The guy is 41 years old and he looked awful during the preseason. Clemens easily outplayed him and appeared much more capable of relieving Sanchez. Also, for the record, I don't agree with this notion that Rex has about Sanchez always giving us the "best chance to win" and therefore, "we'll only go as far as he takes us". To me, there is nothing wrong with benching a young quarterback who is struggling. There have been many good to great quarterbacks who were benched early in their careers. (John Elway and Terry Bradshaw both come to mind - heck, John Elway really didn't start showing promise until his THIRD season in the league and Terry Bradshaw was so tired of riding the bench that he approached Chuck Knoll about trading him). Remember, Sanchez is incredibly young for a starting NFL quarterback. He's 24 years old (two years younger than Lebron James) and only played one full season of college football. In my opinion, his struggles and remarkably inconsistent play are almost to be expected. I'm not a professional athelete but it seems to me that there is something to be said for holding a player accountable for his level of play. I know if I was a player on that team, at some point, I would expect him to be benched from anywhere from one series to an entire game. If any other player on the team played as poorly as he has for the past three weeks, they'd be riding the pine by this point. Why is Sanchez immune to this spectrum of reality and accountability? I'm not saying that Rex should bench him to start the Pittsburgh game. All I'm saying is, that if he gets off to another terrible start, Rex should consider some early relief for our young qb.
He is clearly over his head. Looked like a dear in the headlight in the NE game, and didn't respond well this weekend. His ceiling is a bottom tier starter or a good backup.
I think he probably had the 3 game winning drives he already had this season in mind when he decided Sanchez gave them the best chance to win. All it would have taken is one drive, and he may very well have had it in one pass if Cotchery caught the damn ball. It's tough to pull a guy who's repeatedly got the job done at the end of close games when you're in the middle of a close game. In fact I'd argue that it would have been stupid.
I totally agree with you about the significance of the game winning drives. And I'm not saying Sanchez should lose his job for the rest of the season. All I'm saying is, if Sanchez gets off to another dreadful start and throws a few early picks, what would be so wrong with bringing in Clemens or Brunell to play a series or two to see if they could get some positive momentum going? Look, in the past three games we have gotten very little production out of the quarterback position. We will be hard pressed to win another game this season if that doesn't change.
zOMG!!1!1!!11 Bench Sanchez! Fire Alosi & Schotty! Kellen for QB! Clemens to Turner FTW!!!11!1!11! Superbowl!
There is merit to this point, no doubt about it. What makes it difficult for me to completely agree, though, is that Sanchez seems to have stretches where he flat out sucks, and seems to be in one of them now. But... Last year we were talking about whether he should have been benched, too, and Ryan stuck with him, and despite some additional blunders, Mark ended up getting better and winning games right on up to the Champ game. Does that mean he is assured of doing the same thing this year? Hell no, but it does make one pause about benching him. I dunno, I don't think I would even consider not starting him against Pitt, but perhaps at some point, if his play seems bad enough, and gets to the point where his teammates seem to be losing patience with him, perhaps then I would bench him for Clemens. The sobering thought I mentioned yesterday, sobering to me, anyway, is that last year MS was 28th among all NFL Qb's. He played well early this season, but has been so bad lately that he has dragged his stats all the way down to 28th. Now. No statistical improvement from last year. Yikes, that is not good.
I never lost faith, he had a great stretch of throwing good balls, no turnovers. Than he had a great stretch of putting up the most yards in the league combined with late game heroics. Those skills do not just disappear.
I seriously cannot believe that some people in this thread are trying to pull a case for brunell and even clemens! This is embarassing! MARK IS IN HIS 2nd YEAR, only jet fans!
Such is life with a young QB. You see peaks and valleys. The good thing is that it's clear that the peaks are getting higher and the valleys aren't so low as last year. What we hope to see as he progresses is the number of peaks and valleys (mostly valleys) to decrease and his play to be more stable. He's streaky, no doubt about it. It's probably extremely difficult for Rex to be as patient with him as he has, but in the end it's probably for the best. He needs to fight through it - he'll be stronger for it in the end.
Seriously!! I'm glad I didn't read those posts, I think some "fans" know everything they knew about football from playing Madden.
Seriously? Have you watched Sanchez play over the last three weeks??? He has really struggled and his confidence appears to be at an all-time low. No one is saying he should lose his job for the rest of the season, but if he gets off to another inept start in Pittsburgh, what would be so wrong with bringing in Clemens or Brunell to see if they could give us a spark, and maybe even (I don't know, I might be getting greedy here) help us score an OFFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN?!?!?!? And Why do people get so offended when you bring up benching a young quarterback?? Again people, there have been a plethora of young quarterbacks who got benched for extended periods of time early in their careers and ended up being good to even great players. This really isn't a big deal.
Clemens?? Are you guys fucking serious?? This guy barely beat Tampa last year with the leagues #1 defense. Enough with the stupid BS, Sanchez is our QB. He's done great things for us and at this point in his young career each game is a learning experience. When he bounces back against a very good defense this week his confidence will skyrocket. Win or loss Mark SANCHEZ is our QB.
Part of the problem, which I am caught up in myself, is that the fanbase hoped and still hopes that MS can unify the fanbase, not like it was when Chad divided it. It's clearly not a dispassionate analysis for many, if not most, here. And I understand that. But that doesn't change that it's not like young Qb's never have to ride the bench and then come back and play better. Perhaps it shouldn't be a big deal, but it seems to be, anyway.
Willie, On the raw numbers he's playing at about the same overall level as last year. And what's worse is his "valleys" are coming at crunch time. I remember he started off well last year and had a bad middle stretch. But it's not a good thing for his bad stretch to come in the second half of the season, now into the fourth quarter. And again, he's ranked 28th right now, just as he was for all last year. I get that the OL is off from last year, and that goes into it. But I think the valley he's in now is not appreciably better than last year's.
He's already thrown for more TD's and yardage than he did all of last year. His TD/INT ratio is positive this year. He's struggled mightily in the last 2 games so it's putting a bad taste in our mouths, but he's clearly played better this season. He's also been getting harassed severely the last 2 games with worse pass protection than we saw all of last year. 2009 4 worst games 10/29 119 0TD/5INT 8/21 136 1TD/4INT 18/32 226 1TD/3INT 14/27 138 0TD/3INT 2010 4 worst games 17/33 164 0TD/3INT 16/38 256 0TD/2INT 17/44 216 0TD/1INT 10/21 74 0TD/0INT outside of the Ravens game week one, all of his worst games this year included far more passing 2009 4 best games 20/35 265 2TD/0INT 14/22 163 1TD/0INT 9/16 143 1TD/0INT 7/15 104 1TD/0INT 2010 4 best games 21/30 220 3TD/0INT 15/28 256 3TD/0INT 22/38 315 3TD/1INT 27/44 299 2TD/1INT Our run game isn't as good as it was last year and we're passing much more, because he's more capable.
Yeah, I hear you. And the truth is, the last thing I want to see is Sanchez get pulled in a game because it will illustrate rather clearly just how far he as fallen (as well as, how far this team has fallen) from our early season success. But, if he struggles in the Pittsburgh game with the epic ineptitude that he has exhibited over the last three games, it's going to be hard to convince me that he can rebound in time to save this season. And you are so correct, the thing that kills all of us is we were all so optimistic just a few weeks ago. Even some of the most negative fans on this message board were really buying into this team and this quarterback. I remember the feeling I had after the Houston game. Despite my dissapointment in the defense blowing a big lead, I felt SO good because for the first time in my life as a Jets fan (I'm 25), I was finally convinced that I had a franchise quarterback on my team . . . I guess the thing that I can't get over is, I really thought that we were past all of this. I really thought that Sanchez was past having three dreadful games in a row. I really thought that Sanchez was a good, clearly above average, NFL starting quarterback. This three game regression (which has come at the most critical juncture of the season) has been my personal biggest single dissapointment in the Jets since the 2008 collapse.
