the bottom line is we have 4 ILB and 2 unproven OLbs that we are hoping perform for us. I wish we wuldve traded up to get Manny Lawson but we didnt so well just have to see how it all turns out, mayb someone will surprise.

When Abe came out he was OLb that got switched to DE cause he was more experienced at that postion. Not cause he failed to play it, he never played in a 3-4 defence so how could he fail at it.

Ah my friend is back, and you didn't watch the games closely enough. We did try a 3-4 under Herm and it failed miserably. "Cause" we didn't have the right personnel, Abe being one of them- as he wasn't suited to the stand up rusher role we tried to have him fill.

He did fail, just like he failed at other things while on this team....

I think that Hobson is better suited to play inside in the 3-4, he is a strong bastard with average speed, him and Vilma will compliment each other nicely

Abe was drafted by Parcells to play the OLB in Al Groh's 3-4 defense. Parcells we all can agree has a pretty could track record of drafting LBs for the 3-4 (i.e., Taylor, Farrior and Ware). Abe tallied 5 sacks in his first 6 games standing up as an OLB before getting injured for the remainder season. He got those sacks playing part time on passing situations and not starting. The 3-4 defense "failed" as you called it under Herm because he is not a 3-4 coach. His scheme of choice is the Tampa Cover Who. For such a failure Abe managed somehow to go to more Pro-Bowl in the years he was here than anybody else on the team. He accomplished that despite missing a quarter of those games due to injury.

How long did we try it for, i saw some 3-4 sets but not to the extent that it was our main defense I mean he didnt have enough experience at the 3-4 and so did everybody else u cant just say that just cause he wasnt effective in a couple of reps at 3-4 doesnt mean he failed miserably, it takes time to get used to a system especially if u never played it before. Do u honestly believe just because he's an extremely talented player he can always be in a position to make a play, even though he has never played in that system.

Raiders never ran the 3-4 when Barton was a member of team(were 4-3 defense) IF Barton would have stayed , R Ryan(Raiders DC- guy Mangini wanted to be his DC) stated he would have played inside Lb and was not suited for outside LB. I think with Vilma and Barton inside(both are very good in coverage) B thomas will be very good fit at OLB. Question I have is who going to be the 0ther outside LB. Your loaded at inside LBs but don't have enough depth at OLB.

Vilma needs someone next to him to just take on a guard or truck a lead blocker, I really don't feel that Barton has the strength to do that. Hobson I feel would be a better fit on the inside next to Vilma.
