Breaking News, Penn State, Pennsylvania, Sports » Penn State grads buy Joe Paterno's glasses for $9,000 in charity auction By JANET PICKEL, The Patriot-News February 22, 2010, 12:12PM http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2010/02/penn_state_grads_buy_joe_pater.html STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Two Penn State graduates are paying $9,000 for a chance to see through Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno's trademark thick-rimmed glasses. The bid from Michelle and Kevin Coppola won an auction for a pair of spectacles donated by the Nittany Lions football coach, who's famous for wearing his glasses on the sidelines — along with his rolled-up khakis and jet-black sneakers. The farsighted Paterno had eye surgery last month to improve his vision. The 83-year-old still needs glasses to read, though they're not the Coke bottle-thick glasses he's been famous for. A spokesman for Paterno says the timing of the surgery and the auction was a coincidence. The auction benefited Penn State Public Broadcasting. It started online and wrapped up at a dinner Saturday. Paterno is major college football's winningest coach with 394 victories. A spokeswoman said it's the first time that JoePa has donated his glasses for a charitable auction. The glasses were autographed by Paterno with a Sharpie.
Cool! I have a bunch of PSU memorabilia but no JoePa pix except the one's I've collected from SI covers and the local paper headlines.
My son made me a 2' x 2' Charcoal caricature of JoePa in his art class...also I have repainted 5 macfarlane football figures into Penn State greats...Larry Johnson, Kerry Collins, Paul Pozluszny, Derrick Williams and Anthony Morelli...
i read in the local rag yesterday that Morelli is going to try to make the NFL again. Can't wait for the blue-white game.
