We are allowed to disagree from time to time:smile: The division wasn't great, Miami had 1 win in 2007 and while they played well they were far from a great team and we had everything except a QB. They wound up losing 6 more games. They have talent around the QB w/o a doubt but w/o Brady they are an average at best football team, w/ him they are the best team in the league(pending his recovery). Had NE made the playoffs they would not have been a contender. Bal would have smoked them the same way they smoked Miami. Do I think we'll be 11-5 w/ Sanchez? Assuming he starts all year no I don't expect that but that doesn't have anything to do w/ Cassell. We weren't 16-0 last year, we were 9-7. We have pieces in place to be a playoff team, if our QB can protect the ball we'll have a chance but I'd be ok w/ a 6-10/7-9 year if Sanchez plays and develops. I don't want him to play unless he is ready, I'm ok w/ Kellen starting this year if Sanchez isn't ready.
You are more concerned about a WR or a DE than a FRANCHISE QB? Thank god you are not a GM in the league...or are you Matt Millen? The QB position is the single most important position on the field. The QB touches the ball approximately 55 offensive touches a game - more than any other player on the team. He is far more important than a WR who - and a great one at that - who gets at best approximately 6 catches a game (96 per season). Of course if your QB sucks, I don't care who you got as a WR as it won't matter. DEs in 3/4 are important, but not as important as a 3/4 rush OLB or the nose tackle position. Plus a DE like Coleman who doesn't fit the Jets new 3/4 system and his replacement has already been signed and his salcap hit for a 1/2 sack? Really you can't be serious...
great, so your position depends on creating the illusion that the exceptions are the rules. you haven't made a single argument or shown any examples that show average to good college QB's make better NFL QB's than great college QB's because you can't. claiming the argument is over only shows how little logical analysis you put into your ridiculous post, and at this point are only trying to save face. when you are ready to actually back your position up with facts, feel free to join the discussion. but every example you have tried to give has easily been shown to be flawed, from the Tom Brady example to the idea that any player not nominated for a Heisman can't be considered a great college player.
The single-season record belongs to Colt Brennan of Hawaii, who amassed a passer rating of 186.0 over the 2006 season. Trade Ainge and the 6th for this baller.
Well I am not going to argue about what NE could have done in the playoffs last season. We will never know and thats a good thing. I agree with a lot of what you said. My main issue is this: I am not convinced we knew what we had with KC and Ratliff. Why not give them a start on a decent offense and find out what they really are before trading up on draft day? I know a lot of posters are already saying "we knew they were no good so we upgraded". I dont think we knew that. There is only one way to find that out and thats by giving them a start. I was one of the loudest people saying Ratliff hasn't proven anything yet. But I did like what I saw. I wasn't ready to proclaim him a starter but I sure wanted to find out before we dealt him. We dont know how Sanchez is going to pan out. Could be Namath could be Neagle. IMO this was the wrong path for us to go down.
You need to get over the fact that most of the starting QBs in the NFL were NOT considered great college QBs. They were servicable. You are taking my argument mixing it up and trying to argue like you have fact. Simple fact is greatness is considered opinion not fact. Only the best players in the nation get considered for the Heisman. The list starts with more than three and dwindles down. Since 2000 only 1 Heisman trophy winner has not been a QB. so with that being said lets look at the list since you need facts. out of Chris Weinke, Eric Crouch, Carson Palmer, Jason White, Matt Leinhart, Troy Smith, Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford. Only time will tell bout the last two, but no scouts now think Tebow will make a good NFL QB. From the rest of the list only Carson Palmer starts. Hell Jason white didnt even get drafted if I recall or if he did it was late. Where are the rest of em. Lets look at starting QBs in the nfl now we are certain to start. Rivers, Cassel, and Russel of the AFC west. Neither were considered top QBs in college the years they played. North has Quinn/Anderson, Big Ben, Flacco, Palmer. Only Palmer was a top QB. Ben and Flacco did not go to Power schools and did not play top competition week in and week out. Hell Flacco had to transfer to a smaller school just to play. East has Brady, Pennigton, and Edwards. The sad part is Pennington was the only one anyone ever heard of in college. South has Manning, Gerrard, Schaub, and Collins. LOL wheres that great college QB Young oh yeah hes on the bench thinking bout killing himself. Manning is the only one who was a star in college, and it wasn't really because he was that much better than anyone in college it was because of his father. Move to the NFC starting with the East Mcnabb, Romo, Manning, and Campbell. Manning was considered a top QB in college and he really isn't anything special. His defense won that super bowl. A better QB would have made that game a romp. Romo was undrafted i believe, and Andy Reid has been quoted in the past for taking a QB he could mold in Mcnabb. The south has Leftwich, Delhomme, Ryan, Brees. this is the rare case where you have two QBs who start that were considered top in the nation in Ryan and Brees. Delhomme played in the world league, and leftwich was Pennigtons replacement. He was considered good, but not great. The west there is Warner, whomever the rams start, Hasselback, and probably not Alex Smith. Warner played in the area league and was a Grocery clerk before that. Hasselback was average in college and that really all thats notworthy. North has Rodgers, Cutler, probably Stafford, and whomever the Vikings start. While Rodgers has played better than expected by many, he is by no means a star QB. Cutler is the best in the Class and was considered to be a Top DRAFT QB and yes there is a difference between being a good draft pick and a college player. So my argument does have merit. How many of the Nations top QBs still play and have been successful. Whether you like it or not being considered for the Heisman does affect the perception of a QB. If the Heisman winners were not thought to be the better QBs why did they win it? The college game and the pro game are different. Get over it.
Sanchez was the only one of the top 3 prospects who is likely to become a plus NFL QB. The reason? The completion percentage. Both Stafford and Freeman were below average in terms of accuracy at the college level and that is the single strongest predictor of the ability to succeed at the NFL level in this era. Both of them had to work very hard to raise their completion percentage to an acceptable level and will need to work harder to keep it there in the pros.
Last night some sports talk was saying that 50 - 60% of Sanchez TDs were to guys that had at least 5 yards of seperation. They seemed to think his stats were over rated because of the talent surrounding him. I dont know if this is true but it caught my attention.
the fact that you are rewriting history and saying QB's who were considered among the best in the country, like Rivers and Russel, who clearly were touted as such (maybe not at the beginning of the season but by seasons end they were) shows how ridiculous your argument is. analyzing every QB in the league is irrelevant, because not all are great QB's, and the argument is about great NFL QB's and the relatoin to whether they were great college QB's. way to misunderstand your own argument and try to confuse the issue with irrelevant factors. percentage wise, when you look how many players are considered great college QB's (maybe a handful a year), far more of them make great NFL QB's than the 20 or 30 good college QB's every year who maybe make great NFL QB's. statistics are not on your side. name the top 20 QB's in history and then say which weren't great college QB's. the majority were. nobody is saying that good college QB's don't make great NFL QB's, but percentage wise, more great college QB's make great NFL QB's because there are so few of each. for every 5 great college QB"s who don't make it in the NFL, there are 30 good college QB's who don't either. I'm not sure how you are missing this pretty obvious point. actually I do, because you have to ignore it to defend your position.
Sanchez practiced everyday with pro like players around him is a positive. Most of the pro prospects that come into the NFL play against talent that isn't even in the same ballpark as they are. They have no clue what they are about to face. Playing with great talent, practicing against great talent is a plus coming into the NFL not a minus. Don't forget he practiced against the USC defense everyday. I love Clemens arm and release but lets face it the guy coming out of college didn't have a clue on how to set up in the pocket in the NFL. Sanchez is comming in well coached with great fundementals. Watch the guys footwork. The stuff you're complaining about is one of the big positives about this move.
What I have noticed on the board over the past 24 hours is a huge influx of new posters with a "Undrafted FA" or "Starter" status posting how much they hate the pick, sanchez sucks, blah blah blah and its irritating the shit outta me. For once the org grows a pair of balls and makes a move that could finally bring some joy and happiness to this franchise for years to come, and all I hear is we need a WR, we need a blocking TE... OPEN UP YOUR FUCKING EYES No one is guaranteed to be a franchise QB, but the biggest risk in life is not taking one. And I've already lost many years off my life rooting for this team, so I for one (normally a darksider) is thrilled with Mr Sanchez. Ok, I got off my soapbox...
Shit youre right! Just because people dont post here everyday like you makes their opinion mean nothing
Lemme guess, you hate the pick and we should have stayed at 17 and took alex mack like the browns did. Or did you want crabtree at #5? I have no problem with people not approving the pick, but please try and substantiate your claim. I'm not saying Sanchez is the next Tom Brady, but, I'm not gonna kill the franchise and say well he COULD be a bust, cuz on the other side of the coin he COULD be very good.
Quality versus Quantity Draft This draft was about getting good solid players versus drafting 10 players and hoping 3 stick. Its clearly not about filling every hole on the roster. We did this also a couple of years ago and Revis and D. Harris are emerging as 2 stars in the league. (we only drafted four players that year - stuckey is still here and could factor in for us this season.) So we may only draft 3 players, but I think they will be productive and an important part of the team. A draft like this means the front office did some homework and are getting the guys they feel will make an impact. We will look back at this draft and hopefully be able to say how good it was.
The downside of a draft with only a few selections (<5) is that we hve no depth and have a 4-12 season again just like 2007 was... I kile our three picks but the depth thing worries me.
I got this from another board which is from another board: -Out of 967 players who had started a game in 2007 on rosters at the beginning of last season: 231 were selected in the first round 178 were selected in the second round 133 were selected in the third round 106 were selected in the fourth round 74 were selected in the fifth round 52 were selected in the sixth round 47 were selected in the seventh round 144 were undrafted -Out of 41 quarterbacks drafted or signed in the last 11 years with ten or more career wins: 23 1st round 5 2nd round 4 3rd round 3 4th round 0 5th round 4 6th round 1 7th round 1 undrafted I'd trade 5th, 6th and 7 round picks to move up in the first few rounds. This filling here and there makes no sense when those players in late rounds usually aren't any good.
If the Jets let Sanchez start this year and I said it before the Jets have ( 70 million reasons) to let him play. He will take his lumps and we will be back next year to pickup what we missed this year. And Sanchez will have 1 YEAR experience under his belt.
you could say the same about Matt Ryan, dude was a beast in college, and now the Falcons have a franchise QB
