the problem with vlad is that he is a very nice guy. he needs to get mean out there and throw his size around. hes got all the physical tools to be a monster out there. if he can just find it in him to be as aggressive as his counterparts then he might be good. (umass blinders in effect)

They might as well put his jersey on a traffic cone and call it good.

At least hold the guy a little bit on the way to the ground.
What does a coach say to a guy that is so fucking awful?

The Pete Kendall situation. He completely blew the Pete Kendall situation by letting Kendall go with no worthy replacement in mind. We wound up with Adrien Clarke as a turnstile at LG, which both set D'Brick back a season in his development and destroyed our offense for the season.

Maybe we can resign Gholston to play RT.

No way he can be worse than Hunter

So basically, the FO fell in love with a combine player, and felt Callahan could turn this project into gold. He wasn't impressive at the Senior Bowl, based on what I'm reading around. What would the FO be doing reading/listening to draft pundits' stuff anyway?

It's fine to make mistakes but busting on either side of the line is a dreadful mistake. You're right, we're going to have to hit and soon. Good thing we loaded up on DL last year.

    Exactly.

I'm not so down on the draft of Ducasse, although I think taking a UMass offensive lineman in the second round was very dicey from a value proposition. I'm really down on letting Woody go and then making no effort to replace him given that the odds were good the lockout would prevent the Jets from working with Ducasse after what had been a very disappointing rookie season.

The Jets handling of their offensive line in the 2011 off-season was risky at best and potentially disastrous at worst. What we're seeing happen here is what likely was going to happen given the Jets prioritization of resources in the off-season.

What did you think when Hunter played well enough against Casey Hampton & co. in the regular season when replacing Woody and then Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis in the Colts WC game and then Wilfork and the Pats' line in the Divisonal game? Did you think we were screwed this offseason?

I think we tried to circumvent the aging Woody problem with Ducasse but he wasn't ready, and he might never be. Seems like we missed, that's the problem. I think it's reasonable to assume we were fine with Hunter as the stop-gap with Ducasse eventually replacing him. But this kid sparingly looks good in preseason games. We'll see.

Looking at the cap figures, I think it's likely Hunter doesn't come back despite his new contract. We absorb no dead money if he's cut this offseason and lose .9mil if we cut Ducasse.

The prpblem with Hunter is he's been an extra forever in the NFL. It's hard to find talent at 300lbs. If he was really any good he'd have gotten more than a look from one of the two teams he was on before the Jets. He'd have started for the Jets before they had no other options.

The Jets just whistled past the graveyard and plugged him in at RT and now a great big ghosty is eating their 2011 season and maybe the prospects of their franchise QB.

So, you didn't buy into his success when Woody was out last year? Even as a stop-gap for the hopefully developing Ducasse?

Hunter was great as a backup last year but as a starter this year feels like he's been bad every other game.

What many people don't understand is that Hunter has made this offensive line bad by himself. The 4 other lineman are pretty solid, and usually do a good job, but teams attack Hunter and he allows at least 1 sack a game and 2 or 3 QB hurries. Many games its worse than that. It doesn't help also having Mulligan who has more holds this year than decent blocks. Teams know who the weak link on the O-line is and they attack it. Sanchez isn't a great QB, so having extra time definitely helps him, but he really isn't good enough to only have like 2 or 3 seconds.

The FO really fucked up by getting rid of Woody and letting this goon Hunter start. I had no confidence in Hunter from the second he was handed the starting job. He is an average backup, but an incredibly weak starter at RT. Ducasse was another fuck up by the FO. They made the same mistake with Gholston. He did well at the combine, so they picked him because he was a workout warrior. There is a reason UMass was the only team to offer Vlad a scholarship. He is a physical specimen, but he flat out sucks. Huge reach on Vlad.

I am not going to berate Hunter for sucking because he isn't an under-performer like Gholston was. He never was NFL starter caliber. He really just isn't good, and he is a backup OT, and nothing more than that. Same goes for Vlad. You can't just expect Vlad to step in for what Woody did. Vlad as of now sucks, and has no business playing at all in the NFL as of now. This is the fault of the FO. They knew Vlad was not going to be ready after the lockout, and they knew Hunter was not good enough, but yet they got so caught up in Asomugha that they completely ignored their offseason priorities.

More and more I can see RT being a 1st round selection.

    Sanchize0829,

I looked at your post history and it is basically consumed by Asomugha threads. And you said we fucked up in the draft by not getting a safety or pass rusher and then praised Smith and Leonard in July. You never mention RT being a need. Hunter stepped in and started for this team in 4 games last year and played in game winning drive of the WC round against the Colts and started in the divisional round against the Pats last year.

All I'm asking is stop being Captain Hindsight about this. We thought we were good at RT for a season because the evidence was apparently there. But, he's not a 16 game starter and it would be nice to just use him on Jumbo packages that don't include Matt Mulligan. But Ducasse wasn't ready.

Speaking of, has Ducasse seen more than 5 snaps in a Jumbo set? Is he really worse than Mulligan?

It wouldn't be a sexy pick but if the right guy is on the board and there aren't any can't-miss pass rushers or WRs staring them in the face, I say go for it.

This just isn't true. Callahan truly believed that Hunter was capable and ready to become a good starting RT.

It might be nit-picking, but that whiff on the sack that slammed Sanchez looked like Hunter was trying to get cut later this evening.

    Just an awful job.

It's not nit-picking. Hits like that can kill a season. The only thing a tackle can absolutely not allow is an inside rush move where the pass rusher gets a straight shot at the QB. By my count we've seen 4 of those out of Hunter already this season and 1 out of D'Brick. We're just lucky Sanchez is still standing. The inside breaks from the center and guards are at least in the QB's field of vision. The inside breaks from the tackles come out of nowhere.

    So true.

Sometimes we forget that all it takes is a sack that crunches your QB -- or even if he's wrapped up the wrong way and falls on his arm/fingers/elbow/ankle the wrong way (see, Jim Leonhardt) -- and your season can be over. That's why Dan Marino's fast-release was so important to avoiding sacks.

Jet fans forgot that Richard Todd's broken clavicle (1978) and Vinny Testaverdes achilles (1999) were both fluke plays.
