A day later and I still can't believe this shit. If he's a starter opening day next year start investing in whatever painkillers Sanchez uses.
His salary is guaranteed now, there's no incentive for him to agree to a pay cut anymore. If they haven't already worked that out, he'll be laughing in their faces when they show up asking him to restructure.
Do you have any idea how salaries in the NFL work? There are ways to spread out the guaranteed money cap hit over a longer period of time while lowering his cap number for 2012. It's February 10th people. Some perspective.
I may not be an NFL GM, but I know when I have someone by the balls, and subsequently know when I don't have to do something. Hunter will not be making less money - if they spread it out over time and have it affect different years, he's still getting that money. Which wasn't the point. The point was, the Jets should have asked him to take less money BEFORE the deadline. Not after they already were forced to pay him $2.5M.
Why would we not make a long-term commitment to Hunter? He's very young at 31 and still in the developmental stage after only 8 years in the league. Despite his horrendous performance last year in his first real shot at a starter there is every reason to expect he'll work it all out by 35 or so and be a productive RT for six years after that.
As a backup, sure. Like I said earlier in the thread, if they re-work his contract to 3 years, 4 million total guaranteed, that's more money for Hunter and a lower salary cap number for a guy that would be a backup. I would've rather seen him get cut but I don't think just because they haven't cut him or reworked his contract just yet means he's going to be starting at RT come September.
Restructuring wouldn't be a long term commitment, just move the cap hit back until the TV money explodes the cap to $140m+ Hunter gets cash in his pocket, so he's happy too.
Hunter is no good as a backup any more. He was thoroughly exposed by what happened last season and teams know how to attack him now. One of the benefits that a backup in the trenches has is that nobody has a lot of film on him and so there's real work involved in finding the weaknesses certain to be there and exploiting them. Hunter will be just as bad now for a few snaps or a few games as he was last season. He's an open book for the opposition.
That's a good point if it's 2013 the TV money is supposed to hit, but we still would end up taking the cap hit. Obviously it would hurt a lot less. Is it 2013?
Why would Wayne Hunter ever start in the NFL after his past season, he'll be 2nd string at best is my guess.
Wow someone using common sense. Watch it most of these clowns won't understand this reasoned approach.
Hunter signing elsewhere still does not make the decision not to attempt to rework his contract any more sensible. Nobody's going to pay Hunter MORE than $2.5 mil, so even if he moves ANY incremental difference will have to be made up for by the Jets.
Who knows, there might be another team out there other than the Jets that wants to get their QB smashed repeatedly.
