I think VD could be the lineman the benefits most from the switch to a man blocking scheme. His problems seemed to be mostly mental to me, and this should simplify things for him. He certainly has the raw power that you need in the new scheme. Mind you, I'm not saying he WILL be a lot better, just that he could be. Especially considering he now gets a full NFL offseason. I suppose it's possible he gets cut too, I just find it hard to believe the Jets would give up on the project so soon when his cap number is relatively low. I think Schlauderhoff has the biggest chance of being cut if we bring in another tackle.
Well, no doubt you are right that it is early, and something may happen. But it does seem the options for upgrading the OL seem rather limited right now.
this is part of the problem, though - too many question marks all at once. Schlauderhoff has shown nothing, good or bad. VD has shown plenty bad, but is it possible he can improve? Unlikely, but not impossible. Hunter at 31 imo has had his chance to show whether he should start at RT, and failed to meet the challenge. He could be justified as a backup, but that is lots of money for a backup.
ESPN New York's Rich Cimini suggests the Jets' decision to guarantee RT Wayne Hunter's 2012 base salary reflects poorly on former second-round pick Vladimir Ducasse. The Jets probably would have released Hunter, freeing up $2.45 million, if they believed Ducasse could provide an upgrade. Hunter was horrible in 2011, allowing a team-high 8.5 sacks and committing a club-most 11 penalties. The 61st overall pick in the 2010 draft, Ducasse is quickly shaping up as a bust.
Agree all the way on this. People say you cant get any worse with Wayne Hunter, but yes you can, Vlad Ducasse.
This is spot on, Wayne is cheap (for a starter) familiar with his line-mates, and will have a chip on his shoulder. I see him having a bounce back year with a FULL OFSEASON, Ducasse pushing him (one could hope), and a power running scheme (fuck zone blocking). I type much better with my rose colored glasses on too...
If the Jet's choices at RT are so bad that Hunter or Ducasse is what it comes down to then the answer is to go get another RT. Signing Hunter because Ducasse stinks is like booking passage on the Andrea Doria because the Titanic is sinking. The move to guarantee Hunter's 2012 salary at a level that will be cap-constrictive is unfathomable.
I agree with all of this. I also hate the speculation that the Hunter signing is due to not having faith in VD. If that's the case, admit your mistakes for the good of the team and move on from one or both. We don't need to overpay hard crap to keep the drizzling shits off the field.
I must say you have a way with words. Heh. But... it was after all just Cimini speculation. Here's a thought. Tanny doesn't want to cut VD outright because it sounds too much like admitting a big mistake on the draft pick. So he's already decided Hunter takes VD's place this coming year as the backup tackle. So far so good. But why bring him back at such a high salary as the backup? Here's a possible answer: The Jets now go ahead and either get an FA tackle to play RT, or even better they use a high draft pick to go RT. Then of course they will have to pay this new tackle, either way. So then they can say, oh shit, with so much tied up already in Mangold, Ferguson and even this $2.5 mil for Hunter, guess we have to cut someone else (and here's the key) IN A CAP MOVE. So who is the odd man out at that point? VD. So the spin is, we had to get rid of someone, and if it weren't for the cap we would have been happy, THRILLED in fact, to have kept VD. But we just can't. Yeah, Hunter's salary forced this on us. (Just forget how we didn't even try to renegotiate it down or that he ends up being overpaid for a backup.) Best I can do to make sense of all this horseshit.
That sounds like the Jets spending 1.7 million more than they have too on a backup tackle just to cover the fact that they are cutting *another* high draft choice in the trenches. The Jets are very lucky they're competing against Ross in Miami and the penniless Bills.
Yea I don't think anyone is buying that a guy making less than 500k and looks like he just got of the short bus was cut for cap reasons.
Of course it is, but how much is it worth to Tanny to cover his own ass? Hey, we here will all be in on what is really going on when it goes down. But the Cimini's of this world will go along with the spin it's a cap move that is the way the Jets get rid of VD. "Too much money tied up on the OL already!" Works for me. Hey, i know it sucks, but it's the best explanation I've got. The alternative is that Tanny is literally going crazy and no one has pulled the plug on him yet.
Well, how about throwing in the "we need the roster spot!" argument to supplement? Plus there's the fact that half a mil here, half a mil there, begins to add up. Here's the deal - either the Jets go with VD and Hunter to cover the RT spot, or they bring in someone else, and if someone else the only point in doing so is if that person is better than Hunter. Which will require more money. So, are the Jets going to pay for four tackles? Maybe Schlauderhoff ends up being the odd man out, but that's the drift. Plus, the fact that Hunter SHOULD be the backup tackle compared to VD fits as well. I dunno. The most likely scenarios here are that either Hunter is the starting RT on opening day or VD will be cut. In a cap move, officially. Let's see if I am wrong.
If Tannenbaum cuts Vlad it's admitting he made a mistake, no two ways around it. No one is going to overlook the fact that he was taken 61 overall in 2009 if he gets cut in 2012. It may also actually be making a mistake to cut him given his lack of big time experience and expectations of needing time to develop prior to the draft. The Jets carried 4 tackles in 2011. They absolutely need to better than Wayne fucking Hunter in 2012 though. I don't know why people are insisting Tanny would refuse to admit a mistake either. He's cut 1st and 2nd round picks since he's taken over.
Maybe the front office is forced with little salary cap room to take a risk at a certain position in order to fill the other roster spots through free agency and the upside (hunters playoff resume) plus athletic ability made this in their eyes a safer move than signing a big name free agent. Plus with hunter in a new system he may flourish in the man to man scheme. I don't see it necessary to upgrade a position with a free agent when we have a, yes crappy, but starting option in a new system. He also provides depth along the entire line which is something we desperately need without having to waste a late draft pick that would take way more time to develop to reach hunters potential. We now have a tackle with starting experience at a relatively low price in hunter and a backup in VD with tons of potential. Salary cap considered it may be the smart move in order to fill other holes... plus there is always the draft where a good right tackle that with time can be found anywhere. This isn't the worst move ever, not the best, but at the end of the day may be the smartest.
Yeah, but with Turner on IR, once Baxter was waived the Jets only had two offensive linemen on the bench, VD and Schlauderhoff. Schlauderhoff has gotten even less of a chance than VD to show his stuff. In addition, I am assuming and perhaps I am wrong here that the Jets will bring Turner back. Do they go with four linemen riding the bench? I think not. Someone's gotta go, and it won't be Hunter and his guaranteed contract. Turner would be the most valuable lineman on the bench since he's good and covers three positions. Schlauderhoff may be the odd man out, but it could be VD. Or they in fact are planning on starting Hunter at RT. Best scenario is to cut VD and get a better RT.
I would agree that it's between Schlauderhoff and VD, but I'd lean towards Schlauderhoff being the odd man out simply because I believe VD was drafted with the idea that he'd take time to develop. I disagree that the best case scenario is to cut VD. The best case scenario is that VD with the change to a man scheme and a full NFL offseason "gets it" and wins the starting job by clearly outplaying Hunter. The next best scenario would be upgrading RT via FA or draft and keeping VD IMO. Obviously the first scenario is difficult because your fall back is Wayne Hunter. I have a bit of a weak spot for Vlads raw power and really want to see him turn out. Besides we already spent the 2nd on him and should have known he was a project when we did.
Maybe we should try to make sense of what is going on and not write simply for entertainment value. I came here to learn about the Jets and try to understand what is going on not feed into pointless bullshit i can go anywhere on the internet for that. unlike you.
