To spin it a different way specifically for you, getting the QB of the future killed doesn't help things in the goal for the prize or the QB won't last long enough to get us there, thankfully Joe got us 1 before his knee problems shortened his career

Are you suggesting that we should start the injury prone Chad Pennington because the QB this year is essentially cannon fodder and you prefer to protect Clemens from injury or battle fatigue?

He seemed to survive his BR experience just fine now did he not? He is a different person then say DC so do not think he will be as gun shy as DC is/was. Who knows maybe one of our coaches will eventually lock into the right blocking schemes for our OLman who should be all tested for color blindness to insure they know which guy to block

    Br4dw4y5ux ,

Very good post. What a change reading something optimistic out of you.

In the next few years when the jets improve the guards and RT and pick up another DE and NT you think with KC at the helm this team will be elite and most definitely have Super Bowl aspirations?

This FO is too smart not to see what the weaknesses are. Lets not all lie to each other and actually think that this team had Super Bowl written on them this year.

Clemens certainly adds some things to the offensive arsenal of the Jets. Whether we can put it all together is an open question. There are 31 other teams in the same race to complete the puzzle.

I think there are fewer pieces missing with Clemens at the helm than with Chad. We damn near went to overtime against a strong Raven's defense when really the only things working were Clemens and two of his receivers and they only for the second half. Thomas Jones and the line did get some good work done on the TD drive, however that was the only time all day that the Jets offense looked fully functional. Other than that it was Clemens arm and Cotchery with a bit of help from Coles.

Honestly I am only playing devil's advocate since there is too much uncertainty to think future. But to add to debate, sure if you are sure that he is the player for the future why risk losing Clemens when our oline is still a long ways away, he was killed last week, even the most durable players can't take that beating week in and week out. Especially if you think that Clemens is ready and we aren't going to the SB this year

I posted something along those lines in another thread. We need for KC to get experience but we don't want to turn him into David Carr. So perhaps PHASING KC into games where our OLine is playing well is a decent compromise. 4th qtr work in games either where we're way ahead or way behind. Now I know that's not gonna happen often this year but at least Chad gets to play out what's hopefully is his last season here AND we get KC some real gametime experience.

BTW: I'd like to nominate this post for HOF status here at TGG.com. Great work Bradway!!!!

It's hard to sit a player who is ready to go. Part of the process of developing a player to his full ability is giving him real game situations and crunch time to respond to.

Clemens play in the 4th quarter yesterday would not have been possible coming in cold off the bench. He had to experience the ferocity of the Raven's pass rush and blitzing for 3 quarters in order for him to know how to deal with it.

Next time he faces a rush like that he'll be a bit better prepared but it will take several exposures to that (at least) before he handles it easily and keeps the Jets moving. Chad has never handled that kind of rush and kept the Jets moving, he either gets hurt or flustered into a bad game.

How many defensive fronts other than the second game against the Pats are the Jets going to face this year? And being ready and getting the experience he needs to take us to a SB are two different things.

A quarteback develops by the entire process including the week of practice, and implimentation of the game plan. It's impossible to develop chemistry and timeing and have a practiced knowledge of the game plan if your not working with the first team all week and going into games as the starter. Coming cold off the bench in either blowout wins or losses isn't going to help him that much. He needs work against all kinds of defenses in all kinds of situations.

I haven't watched the replay but from what I remember Clemens had a lot more time to throw the ball in the 4th then he did in the rest of the game. On the flip side it could have been that people just started getting open all of a sudden.

Br4dw4y5ux, great post, I have a hard time disagreeing with anything you said.

I think Mangini and Tannenbaum are playing the same game that Bradway did, pretending not to rebuild and trying to maintain that competitive edge... instead of biting the bullet for the future of the team. And in this philosophy, keeping Chad in for a division rival whose defensive tendencies Chad is very familiar with is probably the course of action they would prefer, but it wouldn't be my approach to the situation this season.

Don't know, this oline has shown to be very bad against the great defenses, we don't know either way how they will respond against a team that has a weaker defense, now you and I both hope that it is more of a case that the defenses we faced so far made us look bad more than the other scenario where our oline is just really that bad no matter who we face. That is something we don't know for sure. And while getting experience is good, running for your life and getting sacked on a constant basis can be a much bigger detriment to the experience he gains. Not only does it make him develop bad habits, but it could affect his confidence if he struggles as well as negative affect his decision making ability.

watching the game again i have to say this is prolly Penny's last year starting unless he turns into a diamond. I full heartedly believe he will remain in the organization and take another pay cut if he has to. hell be a great backup teaching Clemens everything he needs to be a 'smart' Qb. eventually he will retire but still remain with the Jets. Clemens is seriously the real deal, he just needs the brains and time. Penny is going to go on until he breaks cause he is a bad ass and he loves this team. Thats why i have no problem supporting him until it becomes clear he cannot continue. Clemens has an incredible arm but he needs to watch how Penny gets through games with his mind. if Clemens perfects the smarts to as much Penny and with that arm? Geez watch out...

The best thing that happened Sunday was watching KC go from an inexperienced first time QB to a very effective competitive NFL QB in 60 mins. The confidence he will gain from this is invaluable.

Yeah it was a big event for the Jets. Watching Clemens turn it on in the 4th quarter was a milestone for the Jet's rebuilding process because now we can hope for real continuity and even improvement at QB without spending more resources there.

The current situation is sustainable for awhile but Clemens is going to have to get back on the field soon to lock in those gains.
