Yup. Pretty much. Some people know how to roll with punches. Some people know how to put/keep things in perspective. I don't see too many of those people 'round here.
I have to say that the way you handle getting beat by Boston 8/8,or losing to the Nat 2/3 at home, would put you in the minority in any group of Yankee fans no matter what FB team they root for.
Yeah, but I don't think much of the typical sports fan, in general. I mean, what's to "handle," exactly? Do I like losing to Boston eight straight games, or to the frikkin' Nationals? No. But I am capable of understanding that shit happens. And that, over the course of a 162-game season, shit happens multiple times. Am I naive enough to think that all (or any) problems would be solved by moving Joba to the pen? Or by firing Eiland? Or by [insert second-guessed managerial move here]? No. The Yanks have a good team. They'll win more games than they lose this year. They're leading the wild card race, and are only three games out of first place in the AL East with 96 games to play, and they're finally starting to get some of their important pieces healthy again. It's not ideal, but I can live with that.
OK. Lets put something into perspective. The Yankees sucked the last series and the one against Boston, hard! They dont suck in general. Can't win em all....
These threads make me laugh. You have guys sitting there like "Oh, just relax. They'll be fine" even though saying the same thing almost this entire decade has ultimately resulted in the same thing. Entitlement? No. Most fans, of most teams, at least those who are even remotely competitive, get upset when their team doesn't perform. It's part of fandom. Congratulations if you're so emotionally disconnected that it doesn't matter to you, but generally, most people don't treat their favorite team like a math test. The Yankees are playing shit baseball right now. Remember what I mistakenly said yesterday about losing to a pitcher with an ERA over 5? Yeah, it wound up happening anyway. This team is poorly led. You can sit there and make any excuses you want, but there's no denying the team is loaded with talent. Something is missing, and that is quality leadership.
Nick Swisher has t make one stupid decision every game. I hate his face. I would prefer an American negroe in right field.
Had it not been for a key error in the outfield, the mighty Yankees would have been swept by the Nationals. That's a disgrace. I don't care what the stats tell you. If you can't take the field with the Nats, how are you going to make the playoffs? Note to Yankee opponents: Do not throw your ace against the Yankees. Just call up your Triple-A starters and watch the Yankees get baffled by them. Do the Yankees have any competent scouts out there? Note to A-Rod: now that you're home in Florida, stay off the beach, stay out of clubs, stop banging Kate or the starlet of the week, and see if you can actually hit a ball out of the infield. Bad hips? He seems to use them pretty fine OFF the field!!! This team needs a shake-up in the worst way.
Actually, I think what it's missing is bitching from the fans. More bitching will solve the problem. Keep at it! And it's not emotional detachment. It's fucking perspective. Does it suck to lose? Yes. Does it suck to drop two of three to the worst team in baseball? Yes! Does it suck the way the team has played in general for the past week and a half? YES! But they've also played very well... as recently as a week and a half ago, and have played very well overall. The emotional day to day rollercoaster is the part that's sad to see. The misplacement of blame is what's laughable. ETA: For perspective, the 2007 Yankees were swept by the Royals, the 2003 Yanks were swept by the Rangers, and the 2007 Red Sox were swept by the lowly Mariners, the Blue Jays, and the Yankees. Sweeps happen. Losing series to bad teams happens (hopefully not very often). You don't have to be happy about it, but I expect adult fans -- yes, even ones who are emotionally invested in the team -- to be able to handle it without a hissy fit.
whats sad to see is how the team can go from playing the way they were 2 weeks ago to the way they are now. It's getting consistently worse since 03
What is getting consistently worse? Their volatility? Bullshit. The only thing that's getting worse is the attitude of Yankee fans.
They've played "pretty well" against shitty teams. (And now they've lost a series to the shittiest.) They haven't played well against the elite teams. They blew out Texas 4 times, and Toronto once. They've lost all of them against Boston. Bringing up the '07 or 03 Yankees doesn't support you in this conversation. I'm not arguing that the Yankees won't make the playoffs. I'm all but certain they will. I just don't think they'll win the World Series, which was the case in those seasons as well. And it's not that I feel entitled to a championship, but the only reason I care about sports is to watch my teams win it all. I flip out when the Jets don't win too. Sorry that you have to put up with my "hissy fits" though. I didn't realize there was a handbook on how to be a good fan. If you have a copy in PDF form, you can e-mail it to me: UcAnEAtmy@ss.com* That's funny, because everyone sounded just like I do right now back in the 80s. You're old enough to remember those days, or did you grow up in MA? (I ask seriously.) *Don't get all freaked out over it dude. You're a great poster, and I'm just messing with you.
Whats getting worse is the outcome of each season. It went from losing the World Series,to only going deep in the playoffs, then to making an early exit in the playoffs to now not making it at all. That is something for fans to be upset about, and this is a sports forum for fans to discuss it. Does that not make any sense?
This team is a Castillo pop-up and Dukes misplay of being 1-8 in their last 9. Just some terrible baseball being played. Nothing else to add...and ill bitch when I want since someone thinks everything is so bright. Gimmie a break.
And we've already been over this. Who are the other "elite" teams in the AL? Hmm? Losing to Boston sucks, but you said they weren't competitive. I've shown you that most of the games WERE competitive. If the Yanks had gone 3-5 against Boston (which could easily have been the case), they'd be tied for first right now, and hopefully, no one would be claiming the sky is falling. Making it to the playoffs is all that matters. The rest is (mostly) a crap shoot. Do you think the 2003 Marlins were a better team than the 2003 Yankees? No way. Shit can happen in short series (as we just saw with the Nationals). I grew up in NY. I remember people being upset, but not nearly at this level in mid-season. Get upset about it at the end of the season, then. Not after a week and a half of games, mid-season.
And if it weren't for those all of those other games they won, they'd be 0-66 right now. No, they're not playing well. Guess what? They'll probably play better soon. Then guess what? They'll probably have another streak of not playing so well. It's a long season. It happens. Gimme a break, indeed. It's like you've never watched a baseball season unfold before. Sheesh.
Bitch tits batting .212. Pettitte/Wang/Joba very very questionable...You can throw in AJ as well because you don't know which one you're going to get. The pitchers wanting to throw to Cervelli instead of Posada, which is fine..So we'll have a $11 million bench player nightly with either Posada or Matsui. The middle relief is still a major concern...And Girardi has been so goofy the last week and a half. But everything's gonna be alright
