Its hard to get penalties when the receivers are getting 10 yard cushions on every play and the WRs are constantly blowing by DBs that are too slow to keep up. The secondary has been better as of late so they do get some credit and you can definitely hide your secondary to some extent at least. Yards per game is such an overrated stat and not a tell tale at all. Most of it reflects on how bad the offense is and constantly giving teams short fields and getting blown out early and other teams are packing it in. If the offense was average to some extent, the yards per game stat would look much worse this year based on how average this defense is.

great post that really sums up the big issue on this board at the moment - a number of very active posters simply hate Rex Ryan and everything he does in their eyes is wrong and they just see what they want to see regardless of the reality of the situation.

do I think he is a perfect coach? no, far from it there are loads of things he could do better, but then there are no perfect coaches and most of those the people think of as being great are riding on the back of a top 10 QB (which is the polar opposite of what we have had at the Jets during Ryan's tenure).

at this point I don't much care whether they clear house or not as nothing is going to change unless or until we get the QB position sorted and if it takes a complete change of the coaching staff and FO to facilitate that then so be it.

LOL! I thought the same thing--Woody looks so stupid in that baseball cap! He has so much $$$ his minions probably tell him that it makes him look athletic.

all this talk about "we need to blow it up"

newsflash.... we blew it up 2 years ago. in the last couple years we replaced:

    GM
    VP of player personel
    Head Scout
    Offensive coordinator
    Defensive coordinator
    Special teams coordinator

    Starting QB
    Starting HB
    Starting WR
    Starting TE
    Starting LG
    Starting RG
    Starting RT
    Starting ILB
    Starting OLB
    Starding RDE
    Starting RCB
    Starting LCB
    Starting FS
    Starting SS
    Starting P

In just 2 years time we have replaced the head of our organizaiton, the backbone of our scouting, nearly our entire coaching staff, and 2/3 of our starters including our quarterback.

This team HAS been blown up. But some idiot fans still had expectations for us to be some playoff contender inspite of being flush in the middle of an enormous rebuild. there is no one to blame because there is nothing to take blame for. its a rebuild, the onfield product is going to stink for a while. all this talk of 9-7 or 10-6 was beyong idiotic. All fire rex or idzik is going to do is just push the rebuild back even further and stunt the development of anyone young and push guys like mo and sheldon out the door.

What rex did last year with a bottom 3 team talent wise was nothing short of a miracle. us going 2-14 and getting a top 3 pick is the best thing for the team right now

    This is spot on.

to add to the penalty thing... we have rookie and scrub CBs in a league that just cracked down on any/all contact from DBs. penalties around the league for PI and illegal contact is up over 60% from just 1 year ago. complaining we have penalties in the secondary is idiotic when you compare how few it is vs the rest of the league and how young our secondary is

how exactly has rex performed poorly?

he has a bottom 3 team talent wise
he has a bottom 3 record

seems like the results are what was expected(and what some of us predicted).

Rex has do nothing but overachieve here. he got to back to back championship games with mark sanchez as QB! mark sanchez! all while beating tom brady in his prime on the road and peyton manning on the road! do you have any idea how insane that was that those 2 things happened?

and last year might be even more impressibe. 8-8 with a team that had no business winning even 4 games.

I agree. Ryan is tremendous. So is Idzik. There is no possible way that the Jets blew it all up two years ago and that they didn't completely fuck up the rebuild.

and how exactly did they fuck up the rebuild?

-they didnt throw away cap money on players that sucks/didnt pan out
-they didnt trade away high drat picks for players who sucks/didnt pan out

we still have all our cap space and all our picks(should easily be top 5 this year).

We added the defensive rookie of the year with our top pick last season.

at worst, all you can do is speculate the moves we are yet to make wont work out. we are in the phase now where we start to add to the future of this team. we have bottomed out. we gutted the roster, and now we will have our first elite top 5 pick to spend to try and get us a franchise player. what we do with that pick, and what we do with our remaning cap space will determine the success of this rebuild.

the only people who think we fucked up the rebuild are idiots who expected us to be contenders this year. rebuilds take 3-5 years, judging it in year makes no sense. id agree with you if we had thrown huge contracts and old/crappy players or threw away first round picks for marginal guys. but that has not happened.

Rex Ryan's track record speaked for itself. he is one of the most successful coaches in jet history inspite of being here such a short time. 2 champioship games and road wins over 2 of the best QBs of all time.

Idzik gets an incomplete. you cant evaluate a GM on 1.5 seasons. Calling him a bad one during that time just shows a lack of understanding.

Like I said, Ryan and Idzik are great. No harm has been done and the Jets are on track to be great sometime before 2017. Maybe not in 2015 though. Sure, they both flubbed the QB position but no big deal.

how did they flub the QB position when:

    a) zero first round picks used on a QB
    b) zero big/long term money used on a QB

the jets qb of the future clearly isnt on the team. they were smart to see if smith had any potential during what was a wasted season either way. Idzik hasnt hitched his wagon to his franchise QB here yet.

you'd think we were right at the cap with no pick and 6 years/120M invested in someone like cutler.

So 2013 and 2014 was just some giant joke and Smith was drafted just in the off chance that he might be okay?

Flubbed the QB position.... no big deal. really? Just the most important player on the field for any franchise.

    Three Questions for you

Who the hell predicted this team to have less than 6 wins here at the beginning of the season?
How is going 2-11 overachieving in ANY situation?
    Are you on drugs?
