Blocker, I was referring to this past end of the season. You are referencing when Idzik first got here last off season. I refuse to believe, after a full season under his belt, that Idzik didn't have tremendous input as to whether Rex stayed or was gone. That's all I was referring to. :)

I do agree that Idzik probably had more leverage to criticize Rex at the end of his season. But by then he'd already accepted working with Rex, and if he recognized as he should that he would have to make a case for Rex to leave, that would be a bigger burden than saying last off season "Hey I want to pick my own HC just like almost every other GM gets to do."

Yes, if he had come to Woody and made his case, I agree Woody would not have told him to pound sand. He would have merely said "Rex stays because your reasons are not good enough."

no it isn't because it is direct and applicable dispute to your continued stupidity exemplified by the claim that if you want something it must mean you value it at whatever its cost would be to obtain it, which when applied to Idzik means he could have only wanted those players if he valued them at the cost another team signed them for. That is blatantly false and which I clearly disputed. Idzik could want them before he even knew what another team would pay them; when that cost was revealed he no longer wanted them at that value.

not wanting those players after their cost was established doesn't mean he could not have wanted them prior with a desired cost that would have been lower. Your claim is that Idzik could never have had his own value for them which his want was tied to, and his want had to have been tied to the price someone else paid for them.

another simple example. I do want a PS4, but I don't play games as often as I used to so I do not value it at at its current $400 cost and will wait for its inevitable price drop. By your argument if I want a PS4 I must value it at $400, which I do not.

who cares, by your own argument you don't make decisions based on future ramifications as long as it can be afforded under this year's cap. you can't be concerned about a future hold out and support your previous dumb fuck argument, so I will congratulate you for getting your head out of your ass and actually thinking rationally. I'm proud of you.

Way to come up with another retarded example, the logic is about as coherent as your grammar. There are infinite identical PS4's while every FA is unique. And anyway nobody gives a shit that you want a PS4 but not enough to actually buy one if they come over to your house to play video games. You're just another asshole that doesn't have a PS4, see? Which is why it's beyond useless to bring up in the first place, but of course you think it was such a brilliant point and a couple of fools ITT are right on your wavelength so there's that.

Dude, the poll was regarding Idzik's approach to FA, not the end result. The approach he's taking is the wisest, right course for the Jets. Whether the results come in is a different matter entirely. For example, he could take the right approach of not over-paying and getting value, but undervalue some of the players and go to cheap on the contract offer, and not be able to sign them. Then those players go to another team and contribute at a significant level. The problem is, for the most part, we'll never know about this aspect. We won't know how much he offered the FAs he spoke with, so we can't compare it with what they got elsewhere. We can't even just look at how those players did with their new teams, because their demands of the Jets may have been much higher/different than what they were willing to take from another team that was closer to being a SB contender, nor do we know how they would have performed on the Jets, since different teams have different systems, philosophies, and players around them in the lineup. All we can really grade Idzik on is his approach, and it's night and day different and better than Tanny's foolhardy approach. If you can't see that, then you need to step back and re-think your approach.

Idzik is now holding a big bag of tricks. Cap space, cash, draft picks, Sanchez (fwiw), the lure of Ryan and the big city, etc.. As the draft approaches, he can certainly use some of these tools in trading up when necessary or to be very active in player trades in conjunction with draft slots. He doesn't need to choose just between free agency and the draft.

Building slowly is the right way, the smart way. The best players don't become FAs unless they have character concerns, are older, and/or too expensive and their original team has cap issues. Even then, if those teams really value those players, they find a way to keep them. So trying to build quickly means that you're trying to build with older players, players who aren't that good, or who have off field issues, character concerns, or who grossly over value themselves, and those types usually don't have a great work ethic or desire to be the best, because they think they already are. Building with older, more expensive players, generally means you have slower players or players who won't be with you that long, and you will eventually have cap problems.

The Broncos are in a very different situation than the Jets. Manning is not gonna play that much longer. If they're gonna win a SB with him at QB, then they have to act more quickly, and take riskier moves. The Jets are nowhere near that level. We have young players that we're still developing. QB is still a big question mark. You need to learn and realize that Tanny's way was wrong and in the end did more damage to the team than it did good. The Jets were good enough to overachieve and get to the AFC Championship game and that was it, and then boom, the bottom fell out. Building more slowly, leads to long term, sustained success.

LOL I couldn't figure out what was going on. I kept seeing responses, but not posts to which the posters were responding. The new software doesn't show the posts at all of those you have ignored. Sweet!

I voted "not sure yet". He's definitely looking toward the future, and not right now. He seems to want to build a stable foundation before adding top $ free agents. If he plays his cards right, we'll have even more cap space available next season. This is his first off season with money available and ready to spend. We'll see in the longterm if this approach pays off.

At the same time, being too conservative could hurt us as well. Tanny was too aggressive, Idzik may be the polar opposite, which is why a lot of fans are disappointed that we didn't hop right on the big names immediately. I think I prefer a guy that's right in the middle, but there are still many moves to be made before we can even come close to determining the success.

I also imagine that there will be some much bigger name WRs available next season.

Unless it's for someone the team believes is a Pro Bowl QB? No.

I think the idea is that, when you jump on players ASAP, it tends to inflate their price a bit. You want to wait a while so that they start getting stressed out calling their agent all the time. As the big name Tier 1 guys get signed, you start getting more nervous as fewer teams "need" you and as there's less money available to sign you. Most of the CB-needy teams have signed their guys, so DRC should now be more amenable to a $7.5m contract or something reasonable like that, whereas on Day 1 his agent would be saying $10.5m and you'd have to bargain him down to $9m. Now he'll be starting at $9m and you can bargain him down to $8m or $7.5m.
