What would actually happen if Gholston got one on one with Russell? Would he sack him? Would Russell complete the pass? Is that a sign of the Apocalypse?

yeah, that's kind of what he was saying, that he hasn't done jack shit and he wants to change that. how hard was that to grasp? he wasn't boasting or pretending to be some star player whose words were being hung on.

perhaps you should have something useful to say before chiming in.

I'll make fun of the guy, but there is no one that is hoping for the best more so than I. He's a Jet, and even if he produces a little bit, he'll help us. That's pretty much my position.

I really hope he can produce for us.
I think if they line up taylor, jenks ellis and gholston in the 4-3 we might have something.
also is anyone else afraid after the season (or when he retires) jason taylors gunna run and give the dolphins our playbook?
I hate the fact this guys gunna know our ins and outs, not saying he's not gunna play hard for us, just think his loyalty still sits with MIA.

    Guys,

I know there is a ton of disappointment in this pick considering other picks after VG have more then lived up to there paycheck. Yet, looking at the big picture of Jets drafts over the last 4 years we were bound to get a stinker.

An while I am in no way defending VG play over the last two years, lets face it he has been a DE his whole short career and we tried to make a LB out of him. We have all seen the results of this and they have not been either pretty or productive. So the most logical move was to send him back to what he knows. With Ellis winding down his long Jets career and destined to the back up role, if he resigns for less money next year, this is the perfect opportunity for VG to earn a spot for himself.

Yet, as many of you have already stated ,this is certianly going to be the last chance for VG to show the Jets he is truely a professional football player. With this team building towards being a force in the AFC East and both Mia and NE keeping pace, the Jets can neither afford a roster spot or the dollars on VG if this is the best we are going to get out of him.

An certainly if Rex can't get this young man going I would not hold out hope for another coach to be able to do so. As a fan, I am holding out hope that we will see a first rounder emerge this coming year, one who will be serviceable for many years to come and able to replace Ellis.......

Seriously? After Miami basically fired him? Unless Miami rehires him, this would never happen.

lol @ people thinking he has a bad attitude simply because he answered questions by reporters.

i really hope he succeeds somewhat just so he can shut everybody up. its a blank slate at DE..

he can't play OLB, fact. not skills or football instincts he was used to having or has.

but it's his 3rd season. if he wasn't in NY i'm not sure he would be as big a "bust", and we all know he was way over drafted. The guy screamed PROJECT, but not neccessarily bust. this year will make or break him, but i think he'll be serviceable and even pick up a couple of sacks if not by accident/collapsing the pocket on QB (as my thread said).

like the jets, you give him 1 more season and see if he can excel somewhere else, like his natural general position. something his skillset is actually made for.

i'm not saying he's going to be mario williams, but remember when everyone in the world was calling him a bust? Not saying it's going to happen, but people need to hold their judgement on his career label. if you look at the combine numbers, vernon is about as fast as mario and as strong. even though mario has 35-30 lbs on him and is already a freak

Let me know when he gets a sack, then I'll believe him.

Believe it or not he`ll go back to the Fins in his career. As a coach or something.

Also, Who thinks having a random guy bitchslap gholston before every game would fire him up?
Im dead serious though, he might get angry for once.

Then that would be a re-hire, wouldn't it?

Ah, here I found it. The Jets have just said he can relax on the dieting.

DN: How much weight will you have to put on to be effective at defensive end?

VG: I really have gained any yet. But I plan to gain a few pounds. They told me I could kind of relax on the dieting. For so long, I was trying to get down in weight. But now I can gain a few pounds back. The biggest thing is not putting the bad pounds on. If I gain muscle mass – to about 270. I'm still trying to be lean and athletic at the position. But the more weight would help in terms of taking on blocks.

This is a quote that I try to keep in mind every year when watching the Combine/heading in to the draft. Gholston just doesn't have the mentality to play well in the NFL. He has the talent, his strength is freakish, but he just doesn't have the toughness and desire.

    Yep. No argument there.

That said, one can only put themselves in Gholston's shoes:

"Who am I?" Gholston at some point has got to look in the mirror and ask that question?

This year we're gonna find out that answer. I can only hope (but doubt) for the best.

Like I've been saying all along, Gholston isn't gonna get much better from what we've
already seen and that's just not good enough to warrant a roster spot.

The last bit of that article sums him up best when he says...""If I miss a play or miss a tackle, I'm the first guy down on myself."

Well Vernon you must be in depression mode by now because you've missed on almost every play or tackle for 2 seasons.

    ^^^

And sometimes it takes guys 3 years to develop in the NFL especially when they are being asked to play a position that they have not played before. Hopefully 2010 is a big season for VG. Can you imagine this D if VG starts to play up to what he was supposedly capable of???

Has there been a player(DE/LB/DT player) in the NFL whom was a major bust, and did absolutely nothing. Then came year 3-4, and the player was amazing?
