i'm a gholston supporter, but as I watch NFL Total Access on NFL Network and Troy Polamalu's trainers talk about how the biggest and strongest weight lifters are never the best football athletes, it makes me frown and think about this kid. shed the mr. universe look, pick up football quickness and speed, learn the playbook, have 4 great years before he vanishes into the abyss.
And just as many people said he would be the bust of the bunch. College is not the pros. I could care aless what he does against College kids do it against the pro teams the NYJ's play. For him to be drafted that high and people accept 7 sacks a year is a disgrace. We wasted a Premium pick and paid him millions for nothing.
based on what you have seen so far and what you think VG may evolve into, where is 'the right place' in the draft to have gotten him? i'm thinking late 4th to early 5th. this not a slam, just a 're-calculation' based on current events. if ryan can bump him up to a solid 3rd rounder i think everyone here would be happy.
I think you'll see a drastic difference with new aggressive coaching and an off season for Gholston to lose muscle and become more flexible.
Again, none of that has to do with the combine. DRob WAS a workout warrior, after the combine he flew up the charts to all concerned. Gholston was at the top of the charts before the Bowl games even happened. Was he overrated? Vastly. Doesn't change reality, however.
You are a renowned darksider here, and generally, I agree with your pessimistic ways. However, where and when Gholston was drafted can't be changed at this point. Obviously, he's not a #6 pick right now. And maybe he'll never amount to that. But if you're going to sit here and tell me you wouldn't want a guy on your team who can consistently produce about 7 sacks/year - regardless of his draft selection - then you're crazy. Not every team has a Ware, or Merriman, or Harrison; that's what makes those guys who they are. Gholston probably won't be any of those guys, but as for me, I'll take 7 sacks/year, as long as that's what his salary says he's supposed to do. Right now, Gholston is overpaid and underachieving, but how do we know he won't improve to the point where he can get about 7 sacks each season?
