So are you implying that we shouldn't take a potential superstar in the top 5 because we MIGHT get EXTREMELY lucky and pick one up in the 6th round?
It has to do with the team's success. The Jets don't get any extra points or more yardage from diverting a bunch of receptions/receiving yards from the WR position to the TE position. The Jets offense has a huge void of talent, and drafting a TE isn't going to change that. xjetsx said it best, the Jets need to worry about filling core positions on offense before they start going after the luxuries.
what are you talking about. Almost all those teams have offensive TEs except the Panthers. You make it seem like those guys use blocking TEs. Colts - Dallas Clark: 488yds 4 tds(doesnt get many balls thrown his way due to the 3wr set) Patriots - Ben Watson and Daniel Graham: combined for 676 yds 7tds Broncos - had Jeb Putzier: 481yds 0tds(pretty mediocre but Denver always relys on a TE) Seahawks - Jeremy Stevens: 554yds 5 tds(sucks IMO, but was productive) Redskins - Chris Cooler: 774yds 7tds(Pro Bowl Caliber TE) Steelers - Heath Miller: 459yds 6 tds(Rookie Year and plays in a run first offense) So all these Elite Playoff teams do utilize a pass catching TE.
Did you see his career with the Bengals? They were a completely crap team, so for him to do what he did would certainly give him superstar consideration.
I agree...D'Brickashaw Ferguson would be a great step in the right direction. Jonathan Ogden, Walter Jones and Orlando Pace were selected in the top 7...and all of them have played in at least one superbowl. Who do you want 3rdand15draw?
I guess we will have to agree to disagree, but I just never considered him a "superstar"... When I think of superstars I think of Randy Moss, Tom Brady, Ladainian Tomlinson, Peyton Manning, Julius Peppers, Shaun Alexandar...I don't think Corey Dillon belongs in that group.
Are you insane????? Every good prospect is compared to a great NFL player. DEwayne being the next SAPP was much mroe of a guarentee then Vernon is being the next Gates
Not at all. You said: I'm saying that you can, not that we will. I'm going to state the completely obvious that seems to be overlooked because people have a certain player they want. Look every position can be filled later in the draft, the best players at each position go early in the draft. So when you get those players later in the draft they're probably not as good as the player available early in the draft. This is not always true, there are examples across the league. When people say things like you can't get a player like XYZ later in the draft, but you can get an [position here] later in the draft what it really means is that my favorite pick won't be available later.
Filling core positions can be done later in the draft. Taking offensive game-changers and potential superstars should be done when the opportunity presents itself, even if it is "only a TE"...
I completely disagree. The dropoff of talent for OL is way less significant than that of other skill positions.
Haha..cheers to disagreeing  Look, all I'm really saying is that we are in a great position to pick up a game-changing playmaker. IMO, there are 4 "can't miss" players in this draft: Bush, Williams, Hawk, Davis IMO, none of these players can be replaced by someone else later in the draft. We have done a decent job this offseason to put ourselves in a position to the draft the BPA, not someone to specifically fill one of our holes. Our offense does not have a single playmaker on offense that scares the opposing defense. To me, that is a vital part of having a successful offense, and we would be stupid to pass up an opportunity to pick up a player of this calibur.
Perhaps, he also told the San Fransisco Chronicle that he's going to be a 49er. And the Miami Herald, he's going to be a Dolphin. And the Washington Post, he'll be a Redskin. What else would he tell the NEW YORK Post?
Antonio Gates Gates completely dispels the theory of having to invest alot in a TE. And we're just talking about 3 years ago so it's a very valid comparison. We can get a TE later in the draft or thru FA. You CANNOT find a Franchise Left Tackle or wherever they will have Brick line up later in the draft. Yes, we need weapons on Offense. Yet those weapons wont do jack if they dont have protection from the OL. Look at the Houston texans for reference. David Crr #1 pick, Andre Johnson the next year, a top 5 pick. Those two top 5 picks have languished in Houston because they never have addressed the O Line. David Carr broke the most sacked record as a QB and Johnson had a very subpar season last year. The Texans will draft Bush this year and then realize they have these 3 high priced studs and no O line to protect them. Because of this, Houston will finish no better than 6-10 again unless they suddenly get a whole new O line. Every scouting direfctor in the league said there are 3 surefire franchise players in this draft: Williams, Bush and Brick. Davis is a great specimen but so was Rickey Dudley and Troy Drayton and the list goes on and on. Weight room numbers and combines are one of the greatest mysteries involved with thedraft. If Davis was that good, then I would have liked to see him singlehandedly win more games at MD last year. Barry Sanders had a crappy team around him at Ok State and still managed to get his team to a bowl game. Does Davis make the players around him better? Leadership qualities? Dont get me wrong. I think he'll pan out in time yet I dont think you just draft him and plug him in the way you do with Williams, Bush or Brick and see him flourish right off the bat.
Johnson was hurt a lot last year, he has to do too much because they do not have anybody else trying to catch the ball on that team...at least we have 3 receivers that can catch the ball and a couple receiving TEs as opposed to no receiving TE until this year (they signed Putzier, right?) and one great receiver with small inconsistent guys playing the rest of the field while he gets blanketed with DBs.
That is just ridiculous. I guess the Terps stayed in games because of JoJo Walker and Danny Malendez, not VD.... One more thing and then I'll leave this board which i have no business being on, has anyone noticed that all of the highlights you see of Mario Williams are against Maryland from last season? And if my memory serves me right he was going up against a converted tight end who was playing OT for the first time. Maryland's line was absolute trash last year and Mario was coming off the WEAK SIDE. He had 4 sacks that game. Dare i say bust waiting to happen..........
