If the Colts keep the GOAT and draft Luck, and commit 50 mil to both, they should just go out and give the 3rd string qb another 10+ mil. Why not commit half your team cap number to 3 players, only one of whom can play at any time. It would be brilliant.
Or they could trade #1 pick to the Jets and keep Manning. Jets draft Luck and he can develop behind Mark and also offer competition. The Colts need help on defense more than anything. Interesting idea, but we'd have to give up someone(s) decent.
You do know what we would have to give up to get the #1 pick from them right ? Pretty much MS and 2 1st rounders minimum And I doubt they would take even that
Someone decent would probably include Darrelle Revis and our 1st round pick or Mark Sanchez... Great idea though!
probably would be revis, Mangold our first 2nd and a 3rd. The ESPN guys (yes ik its espn) were talking about the #1 overall netting 3 #1's and a pair of #2's, from St. Louis (#2 overall pick). So it would be worse than that if you are trading from #16 up.
I would trade that pick in a heartbeat. Especially since you could easily trade that #2 overall for a team desperate for RG3 for probably 2 more firsts, so youre effectively talking about 5#1s and 2 #2s for an untested rookie, I dont even think someone like Brady or Peyton is worth that in their prime
You and me have butted heads before, but this takes the cake. A "great" team? First of all, they aren't anywhere near even a very good team, much less great. But you contradicted your entire thought by saying they're a great team and then proceeded to describe exactly why they are NOT a great team. Great teams don't have sevreal holes, and an awful QB, as you put it.
The Jets would have to gut team and also mortgage the future to do this. Bad teams with nothing to look forward to make moves like that. The Jets are not a "trade for the 1st pick" type of team, nor should they be.
Reality Check? Agree that aren't a trade for the first pick team, but they are a mortgage the near future to win now team. If they continue thinking they can win this year and manage their roster accordingly, they will just dig themselves deeper into a cap hole. At this point they have very real cap space problems. They just can't bring in big names (let alone the biggest of all possible names) without getting rid of other pieces of the puzzle. As suggested earlier, if they buy the most expensive of all possible engines, they're going to have to sell the chassis. There's just no spare cash in the bank. Payton's Colts were a star's team. They put the bulk their money into skill position players and pass rushing defensive ends. They made it work, at least during the regular season (they didn't do so well in the playoffs, usually) but their philosophy is very different from the recent Jets ground and pound. The other problem is timing. The Colts aren't going to release or commit to Payton until the day before he is due that big bonus. The Colts will want the latest possible medical information before they make that call. I doubt very much the Jets will wait on that decision before deciding which way they are going to take their team. They are going to hire coaches, plan the draft and think about free agents without having Payton being more than a vague possibility. I'm expecting Ryan, Sanchez and more of the same out of the Jets next year. With the NFL salary cap back in place now, the Jets can't pull the Yankee's trick of buying their way into the playoffs again. A few years ago they did it twice, but no more. We'll see.
If the Colts were going to trade the pick it would not be for 3 #1's and 2 #2's because nobody would make that trade. If they really decided to let Luck go they'd be looking for the same kind of deal that the Chargers got for Eli. A very high pick in the same draft, plus a 2nd or 3rd in the same draft (good picks because the #1 was good), plus a 1st and mid round pick the following year. Nobody in their right mind is going to acquire Andrew Luck at a cost that is so high that if he does not hit the very top of his potential the trade will fail. Particularly given the pressure such a trade would put on Luck and the front office that made it.
If the Jets were seriously considering Manning, then why did they bring in Tony Sporano? I just don't buy the Manning hype and think there is little to no chance that Manning comes to the Jets. The Jets are sticking it out with Sanchez another year. Listen to both Rex's and Tony's words since he got the OC gig. They want to run the ball and make big plays in the play-action game.
But to make plays in the play-action game, they need a Deep-Threat....and you all know where I'm going with this.
LMAO!!! The visual I just had of Manning going deep and catching a TD pass is so funny. I bet he could get better separation than Holmes.
I think Miami might be out of the "running" for Manning. I dont think the new HC wants to tie his hands to Manning, and it also seems like they will try to get Matt Flynn in their. Another team I think is out is the Redskins, would Peyton really want to go to the same division as his brother so they can knock each other out each year? I dont think they would want to hurt each others legacies. His options are starting to appear limited, and im not even sure if the Jets are in this. The teams I see in this are: Cardinals (gave up alot for Kolb, not even sure if they can get him), Seahawks, Chiefs, Broncos. Thats about it I believe.
They stayed under the salary cap, baseball has no salary cap. And the Red Sox sure bought their way to the playoffs this year... Anyways, in a couple years the salary cap is going to increase because of the tv deal so it will keep working. Every year someone has said the Jets are in cap hell, every year the Jets make moves and easily stay under the cap. If they are the right moves or not are up to debate, but they spend money within the cap so they aren't buying anything. They are paying the players like every nfl team that give out contracts, or do people volunteer for the Pats and don't take a paycheck.
