Good point, but I'm not so sure either is built for the nickel in Mangini's scheme (or at least the Pat's scheme), especially Barrett IMO. You could be right, but definitely something else to watch closely in TC....
not great news either, this team needs a youth movement...mickens is not a good sign good thing its only a minor move
Barrett seems to be a player that plays better when challenged. Donnie did it to him in 04 and he responded. He was set in the starter role at the beginning of last year and played horribly until they put Miller in. I can see him stepping up but here is the dilemma, if Barrett loses to Miller, then how will he respond to just being a nickel back? If Barrett wins then will being a nickel affect Miller's development and would that seem to be a waste of a second round pick again> And lastly, if its Dyson that somehow loses, then that would be a horrible FA signing. I could see Barrett getting traded if Miller beats him out but based on what happened in NE last year, I would think that Mangini would think long and hard before trading a very capable starting caliber CB. I think that the CB battle will be the most intriguing battle in training camp.
I'm giving Mangini the benefit of the doubt on this one...how can we question anything this guys does regarding the secondary. Until proven otherwise...that is...
what a dumb signing... i wanted to save money for jason babin or donnie edwards. say what you want about edwards but there is no doubting that he can still do a terrific job as the 4th linebacker and mentoring hobson and schlegel.
Why are you all hating on Mickens over here??? He's been with the team for MOST of his LONG career...he will provide veteran leadership to a VERY YOUNG secondary...who else do we have on the roster to show the ropes to the young guys??? we didn't have a veteran in the secondary before this signing, so to me, this is just another case of how smart Tangini is, and they both know exactly what Mickens will bring to the table...two most important things are leadership and depth!
UGH? Some Jet fan! Mickens has been a good player for the Jets in the past. Not a star, not even a starter for the msot part. However, he did his job as nickel back well for a long time. I read the article about his return, and I like hearing him say he knows he's here to help the young guys. Can this be a prelude to a coaching career? If Mangini brought him back - and he knows the guy's ability and personality - then there must be a good reason. Welcome home Mick!
Is it really that big a deal to get a vet in here who is not really even going to play? Wow, we're making a big deal of nothing. It's a fine move, as he knows the defense from playing it with Belicheck, and with Cleveland last yr.
I don't have a problem with Lil' Ray. He's had a decent (not spectacular, but decent) career and has always been a fairly solid cover guy. He's the kind of backup we can throw in there should we have yet another year of catastrophic injuries in that position like we had with our QB position. I have no problem with him being insurance on the bench, waiting for his turn (if it ever comes) and I don't think he has a problem with doing that either. He's always been a team guy and my guess is we signed him cheap and he's not hurting our Cap very much, if at all. Good insurance policy. I applaud the signing.
Mickens will have cost us absolutely nothing. He will be receiving veteran minimum which will ultimately cost us about 2 or 300k on the cap. Big deal. I believe we still have over 10 million left in cap space. If the Jets feel they need to make more moves, they will have the money to do it. Good depth signing.
The Jets D backfield is pretty darned young.... some veteran presence back there with a guy that already knows the new system has to be a plus. I don't understand why anyone would not like the return of Mickens.... he's going to be a dime man, and will help the young guys tremendously.
I don't think I was making a big deal out of it. All I said was that I am not trilled with the move. I have supported the FO so far, this is the first move I am not thrilled with. I just think he is past his prime, and if he is here just to teach the younger crop, ok. But I am not overjoyed with him being back. He played great for us, but his play dropped significantly and I don't think he has anything left in the tank. That is just my opinion and reaction to the signing, you can take with a grain of salt.
Ray Mickens is now threatening Jonathan Vilma as my favorite Jets defensive player. I always liked the guy, and found him a defensive version of Wayne Chrebet, a doughty presence often figuring in big plays in big games. He was always excellent in third and long situations, whether it was blitzing or floating back and breaking up a pass. His lack of speed and size suggests to me he may have skills to impart on the youngsters around him, and perhaps he may work at this with an eye toward setting himself up for a coaching job. Most importantly, Ray is a Jet again, and hopefully will retire a Jet with more honors to come. Welcome home!
This team's already had a youth movement, including the HC and FO. What 119 must be referring to is a bowel movement. But we did that too, after we got rid of Herm Edwards.
Gentlemen, Ray Mickens is a classic "Hold the Fort" guy. He was brought in to add some depth until the young guys get their feet under them. He has played under Parcells and Belichek; he is familiar with the scheme (which tends to be complex) that will be run, and, he knows from experience what is expected during the off season from each and every player. He'll show the young guys that it is no more "Club Herm" and that in order to be successful, you have to really work at getting yourself in shape. He'll set a good example of how to do things the BP-BB way. I know that he will only be here for a year or two so I'm happy with the signing BUT... If he ends up as one of our starters this year, we're in a lot worse shape than any of us thought.
