I found it cheaper than cabs when I lived in Philly. In New York I've only taken it once or twice since it's been more expensive. I just take the subway everywhere.
I use Uber all the time when I travel for work and need a ride from hotel to delicious craft beer bar. I am a huge proponent of it. No cash needed, no tip needed, and you don't have to stand outside like an asshole flagging down a cab.

Its pretty reliable me and some friends usually hit up Hoboken for some drinks, coming from the Montclair area. Uber is pretty cheap. Even smoked some herb on the way to Hoboken once with the Uber driver.
