If he goes to Boston so be it... I'd rather have the prospects... but I still think he stays with the Twins and hits the open market next year
Any trade would, of course, be contingent on a new deal being agreed upon with Santana, so it wouldn't be done until the new contract is signed.
Of course and it would be impossible to keep a trade secret for 72 hours while those negotiations went on. It would have to be approved by the league office for starters and that's like a sieve. According to Phillips the Twins were meeting to decide whether to trade him or keep him. My guess is they say they will keep him. Then wait a few weeks and try to trade him again. It isn't like there are any offers out there now that they couldn't get a month from now. This gives everybody a chance to rethink their positions. Smith said there is absolutely no payroll concerns in Minnesota and that the only reason they haven't resigned him is because of the length of contract he is looking for. Something everybody should be thinking about. Pitchers should never be given anything more then 5 years and even that is a reach. Perfect example of that is Pavano and that was only 40 million down the drain. Can you imagine if it was 163?
12:15 p.m., from Peter Gammons • Don't expect to see a Twins-Red Sox or Twins-Yankees whopper. The sense is now that Minnesota will hold onto Johan Santana.
Odd, I was just watching ESPN and Gammons said the Twins met at midnight to decide what players they wanted from the Red Sox and he expected there could be a deal made. It's really out of hand when the same sources contradict themselves. It would go along with what I said awhile ago. They could just wait a few weeks and then shop him again after everybody has calmed down. It also allows the Yankees back in without losing face. Setting a deadline for this week and for these meetings has nothing to do with what they do weeks from now.
I fully expected Santana to just stay put from the get go and if the Twins do end up contending this year don't be suprised if they make more attempts to lock him up long term.
Nobody will contend with Detroit in that division. They may have become the best team in the AL last night. Thw Yankees may only be the 3rd or 4th best team now.
I don't know about that, they seem really great on paper but they gave up all of thier top prospects to get this deal done. If they manage to stay perfectly healthy then there's no question they are top 3 in the AL, but at this point they have pretty much no depth behind their major league roster. Besides I don't think that D-train will adjust well to the AL at all. If the Twins pitching manages to stay healthy (assuming they hold on to Santana) then they should at least have a shot of giving Detriot or Cleveland a run for their money.
I'm not even counting Willis in that trade. Cabrera makes them a 1000 run team and that will win them a lot of ballgames.
That ballpark takes away some of the stats though... but I agree that Cabrera is the crown jewel of that deal
A 3 page article....I just posted an interesting bit of info here... http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-2/1196832989296950.xml&coll=1 As of last night, the Boston Red Sox were still waiting to hear back after having given the Twins a choice of two offers: pitcher Jon Lester and center fielder Coco Crisp plus prospects or outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury plus a larger package of prospects. Some reports had Boston including minor-league outfielder Ryan Kalish, drafted last year out of Red Bank Catholic. Boston officials were to gather at 1 a.m. today (Eastern time). A third Yankees official admitted that the Yankees want to improve their rotation somehow, with the need even greater if their division rivals add Santana. According to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is not directly involved in talks, the Yankees will turn their attention to other possible trades, including Oakland's Dan Haren. But the A's are asking even more for Haren than the Twins are for Santana, on the basis that he will be cheaper, and Arizona has made a strong offer for Haren.
With the Red Sox still trying to match names with the Twins, other teams are trying to jump into the Johan Santana sweepstakes, including the Mets, SI.com has learned. The Red Sox are offering multiplayer packages of players starting with either pitcher Jon Lester or outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, but the Twins are also fielding calls from other teams. It is possible that the Twins, which hoped for a package that included both Lester and Ellsbury, still aren't completely satisfied with Boston's proposals. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/12/05/santana.update/index.html
Heyman was just on WFAN. He said the Twins are having a real problem with any offer. They were convinced coming in that they could get Hughes and Kennedy or Lester and Ellsbury. With the Yankees dropping out there is no incentive for Boston to do anything at this point. He still thinks Boston may get him in the end but they won't get much in return. He also said they are fielding calls from other teams. I guess the price tag isn't scaring many people off.
Cmon Mets, offer up the whole farm system if you have to. Anything less than getting a stud pitcher is a failure this offseason..
At this point, the only logical place is the Mets, IMO. Boston gives up too much with either set of trades, for a pitcher who may no longer be at the top of his game. We can't even consider a deal that includes Hughes, much less Hughes and Kennedy. Melky and Kennedy, sure, but not all three in the same deal. Now I don't know the Mets farm system, but it's got to have some talent. We've watched some pretty damn good players come out of that system. (You should have used Milledge here.) Santana would smoke the NL East, so he'd be a great fit for you guys. Plus, it would prevent either us or the Sox from getting screwed, which I've been vocal about all week. (I can't believe I'm actually concerned for the welfare of the Red Sox organization. Granted, it's because of the backlash to both of us in the long-term, but damn, I feel like I need a shower.) I'd be happy to see Santana in Queens. Plus, I'd get the chance to watch him pitch more often, which would be cool.
I think the Red Sox deals are too good to be true for the Red Sox. This league is all about winning and adding Santana to that roster would make them the clear favorites in 2008. It also would not put them back too far for the future either. The Yankees' offer is much better for the Twins, I am surprised they did not feel that way.
I agree, he makes perfect sense for the Mets, problem is their farm system is terrible. Without giving up Reyes in the deal, they probably can't come up with an offer that tops Bostons mediocre offer.
