Resurrecting this thread because Trumaine Johnson sucks, but is being paid a lot of money. A quick look at overthecap.com has us essentially locked to him till at least 2021, because in 2020 he would be 12 mil in dead money, versus 3 mil in cap savings.

I would think Joe Douglas may still get rid of him as a way of cutting the chord on another Macc signing, and also making sure our secondary gets a fresh start.

Even though it was a clear overpay, I didn't expect him to be this bad.

Can't see the point on either point.

I've never heard of him being a distraction or lazy.

He just kinda sucks. Unless we're suddenly packed with talent...we need him.

I love that Gase is holding players accountable. Called out the Oline receivers and CB play. It's about time..

That's one of Gase' positives. He's the anti-bowles in that regard. Trumaine Johnson is finished here and I would imagine that it's going to be a hard sell to have him benched for the rest of the season. Question is, can Joe Douglas get rid of him? His contract is prohibitive and even if we make him inactive the rest of the season, he's going to cost a bunch in dead money.

Best case scenario is sending him to another team for a conditional pick. At this rate, I would think even getting a 5-7 round pick would be unrealistic, unless Jets agree to take on most of his salary.

Anything is better than the abyss they are getting from him.

It's dead money anyway at this point. No use having him on the sidelines potentially turning into a toxic force.

He was apparently practicing with the starters all week and was then benched. To me that screams, he was either late to a meeting, or completely missed a meeting. As far as I'm concerned, Jets need to get rid of the under achievers and bad apples.

Trumaine and L. Williams have to go

they said it wasn't disciplinary. Williams didnt' like the way tru looked on film week 1 so benched him. williams like to do that to set an example when high paid vets look like they are phoning it in

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm glad the coaching staff is holding players accountable. Seems odd that he was practicing with the 1's all week, just to get benched, but there is no doubt that Tru has been bad, and despite the dead money hit, he's going to likely be gone after this season

If you get right down to it, a lot of the roster needs to go.

    Gase or Tru?

I have no problem with Gase benching Tru, the guy has done zero for us since he signed his retirement contract.

This was a bad day to buy a Trumaine Johnson jersey.

I’m going to double down with a Fales color rush.

It was obvious last year he was mailing it in. Heart isn't in it anymore.

It probably confirms everybody's suspicions that he never gave a flying fuck from the off and was here for the bag of $$$$$$$ only.

Does dead money get settled the year of releasing the player? For example we cut Trumaine in 2020 so we save $3 million that year and have to eat $12 million in dead cap. By 2021, are we completely cleared of all salary obligations to Trumaine (at least on paper)?

If this is the case it seems better to bit the bullet and deal with it in 2020 so we have more money in 2021 as opposed to waiting until then to release him. Sure only getting $3 million to cut him stinks, but we aren't playing him anyway and this is clearly a sunk cost.

Cap money rolls over, and you can restructure contracts. So it doesn't really matter when we eat the dead money, only that we have to eat it.
