I think you're right that the Cards look to protect Murray. . So let's say the Jets are 4th in line among 4 teams looking to protect their young QBs with OL picks (NYG, Cards, Cleve & NYJ). . Do the e.g. Chargers look to match their trading for Trai Turner with an OL pick?..and in doing so put the Jets 5th in line??....
I really think the 2nd WR this year is a better player than the 4th OT. If the Jets are looking at the 5th OT and the 2nd WR they really need to take the WR. Protecting Darnold is the biggest priority but not at the cost of picking up an average OT over a great WR. There's no way that doing that is better for Darnold. We're better off taking the star WR and overloading on OL later in the draft to compensate. We probably should be overloading on OL anyway to give us the best chance to put a good 5 in front of Darnold this year. Having a #1 WR alongside the Jets other offensive talent is the best way to use the 11 if one of the top 3 OT's doesn't drop to the Jets. Again, we might be better off planning to make 5 OL picks in the draft to be as sure as we can be.
While there are OLs (OTs in particular) they don't approach the overall depth of this WR class. The current Jets OL is not only weak at a position "here and there" but an entire unit in serious need of an overhaul. So, the Jets pick the 2nd WR at #11 (vs. e.g. Andrew Thomas) and wait until #48 to go OL? Then the Jets at best get a second-tier OT (with a lesser guarantee that the lower round OT pick will be a plug and play contributor on a unit badly in need of one). Me, I'm grabbing one of the "top 4" OTs at #11 because the "2nd tier OTs" (Jones, Jax, Prince) are probably gone as well at which point the Jets will have struck out in addressing a critical need (and I'm not normally a "need over BPA" person, but the current OL unit is simply in dire need of repair). Further, if certain OL are still available in the 2nd (e.g. Hunt, Cushenberry) I'd grab one of them as well. As for WR, I'd then consider e.g. a Claypool/Pittman in the 3rd. Joe Douglas imho is going 'beef' in this his first draft go around.
Another option for the Jets : A former first-round pick who was out of the NFL last season would like to get back into the league in 2020. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that guard Chance Warmack is looking for another shot after last playing for the Eagles during the 2018 season. Warmack was the 10th overall pick of the 2013 draft by the Titans and started 46 games over his first three seasons in the league. The Titans didn’t pick up his fifth-year option and he moved on to Philadelphia after missing 14 games in 2016 with a hand injury. Per the report, Warmack has spoken to teams about visiting them as part of his hunt for a new job. Given the move to greatly limit access to team facilities around the league, it’s unclear when those visits might take place. Chance Warmack aiming for return to NFL originally appeared on Pro Football Talk
I'd do due diligence on Warmack although it will probably turn out to be Kalil v.2.0. I'm not quite sure what happened to his NFL career as it looked like he had the tools to succeed.
Certain guys just don't pan out making the switch to the NFL (the guy certainly looked the part walking ND defenders downfield in the 2013 BCS Game).
The only way the word "guarantee" should be used in a discussion of the NFL draft (particularly regarding the NY Jets) is with a preceding "no."
