Good post! I'm really glad you mentioned this. Earlier, I looked up his college stats. His Jr. Season (his first year starting) he completed 62% of his passes for 4,200 yards, 32 TDs and only 3 interceptions. His Senior year, he completed 63.1% of his passes for 3,855 yards, 29 TDs and 7 interceptions. So I think his rep as a gunslinger is a over done. If anything, I think he may have decided he needed to do that for the Jets to have any chance last season.

I agree with you that he is a leader. I think he trusts his WRs more, perhaps a little too much, but gives the offense a better chance.

I totally agree with you that once he learns the offense better if he is given a chance, that he would settle down/in and do well.

I just hope that Morton & Bates will get in Bowles' face and tell him that he'll be making a big mistake and that they're gonna kick his ass if he doesn't give Petty a realistic shot.

I agree that Sanchez was totally mishandled, and about the WR situation. It all started when Rex dumped a ton of pressure on him his rookie season by predicting a SB victory. I despised Rex and his OCs from Schottenheimer to Sparano to Mornhinweg and whomever else I've forgotten.

That said, I don't think that Sanchez would have ever amounted to much more than he did. I never liked him coming out of college and I don't think he had/has either the talent or mental makeup to have been a quality starter.

Maybe he wouldn't have. But we didn't give him much of a chance. I still could've seen him being a 25 TD/15 INT type of quarterback. Middle of the road type of guy. Then we kept changing systems on him and he was officially forever ruined. He did have a good NFL arm and solid escapability which IMO was always an underrated quality and something that cannot be taught.

Petty's statistics should carry a HUGE asterisk next to it. The spread offense can make any QBs #s look good. It was a very simple offense, no huddle or pro concepts. Petty at his age, doesn't have too much upside to offer. Has to learn the pro offense and adapt to the NFL, if he had potential, you would've saw it last year.

It's Hack or time for a new QB all together, perhaps Bowles should also see the door. Get an offensive coach in here.

No, Sanchez was never a guy who could carry a team on his back - my basic definition of a FQB. But that said he proved he was good enough to win when surrounded by enough talent. Not many QBs got to two AFC championship games in a row, and had a chance to win both. The one who was in over his head all along though was Rex, (as I believe Bowles is now). And whoever made the decisions to let that talent slip away without being replaced, whether it was Rex, Tannenbaum, or Woody, or all three, were idiots. Again, I put it down to the hubris of believing that "defense wins championships" without understanding that you need to score points too.

The Jets ruined Sanchez, just as they have every QB - including Namath in the end.

And even at that, there's a huge defense between a typical college spread offense and what Baylor ran. Their offense was legitimately just pitch and catch. I would hope you wouldn't get intercepted too often in that thing...

I think we did see potential last year, in spite of the dreck surrounding him. He hung in there, and showed courage, and an NFL arm. What we couldn't tell from it, is can he be consistent and stay healthy? I'd play him over McCown for sure.

I am not a Petty fanboy of a sort - just let me ask you. Do you think Tom Brady could lead this team to a winning season last year?

The point? [Any potential, if Petty had any, would have been visible last year] is but a laughable assertion.

P.S. Don't forget that Petty didn't even have sufficient repetitions with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. He clicked with Robby Anderson for a reason. [So - Brady's WR line-up would not include Marshall and Decker to boot.]

I don't understand why you would get dinged for taking risky throws in TC, and if your a check down Charlie like McCown that somehow puts you at the top. Shouldn't these guys be trying to push the envelope in training camp? And given Pettys limited reps, shouldn't he be letting it fly?

Some folks would be petrified to see INT in training camp. I know Aaron Rodgers is not one of them. [Yeah. INTs in training camps and preseason is worth nothing in reality, but for some, they are the golden rule.]

Petty's senior year he went 29 TDs to 7 INTs. The year after he left, Seth Russell went 29 TDs and 6 INTs, and when he went down the backup went 12 TDs and 2 INTs. I, for one, think Russell and Stidham have been shafted by the NFL. Sad!

I read the criticisms of Petty as being too reckless with the ball in TC. Trusting his receivers to make a play. Thats what you SHOULD be working on in TC. I thought that was a foolish knock on Petty. Also considering his completion numbers in TC are better than Hack with less reps I don't understand the complaint.

It's one thing for Aaron Rogers or Matt Ryan to throw picks in training camp, but for guys on the bubble like Petty and Hackenberg, it's not a good idea.

Hack and Petty have similar numbers of int's as the old veteran, so I don't see what the problem is.

So far McCown has had exclusive training with the ones. Hack and Petty much less. Another Bowles screwup... When McCown gets injured or plays his way out of the role the team will regret not giving both young QB's more reps with the ones.

Maybe it's just me - but, I'm a firm believer of an idea that, [Not allowing one to fail is not allowing one to succeed.]

And I can attest to a lot of examples - not just from my own life, but from countless others.

For instance - if you ever played chess, you'd know that [you learn a lot more from your losses than from your wins.] Is it only related to chess? Hell no. If it involves any sort of mental training or discipline, then you learn the most when the challenge is [sufficient], but [not over the head], in that it allows the learner to push themselves to the limit. Take math or science; when you were presented with a new concept, did it make a perfect, smooth transition straight into your head? [You know that is just not the case.]

So why do we restrict these kids from learning? Yeah - if it's a pick at crucial time in [regular season game] or, heaven forbid, [playoff game], then yeah. I see the point. But training camp? Seriously?

For this reason, I fail to see these accuracy issues. Petty and Hack - they are not Sanchez-like bad when it comes to accuracy. Remember? Sanchez just could not complete a 3 yard swing pass for the life of him - and that meant Jets could not benefit from the likes of bubble screen and whatnot.

Yeah - to me that's the most important thing. Are the kids learning? Are they improving? Yes. That's the reason I don't see a point in McClown dumpoff passes. That's completely pointless, and utterly useless in the grand scheme of things.

[And I'd think Petty would make a heck of a leader, for trying to build the chemistry with "every receiver" for a change.]

Last year Petty connected with walk on WR Robbie Anderson so many times in exhibition games the Jets had to keep Anderson around. Petty to Anderson connected several times during the season.

This year Petty is playing catch with Chris Harper. Another unknown guy that now is in consideration for a roster spot when the Jets have a lot of prospects and only a few slots.

Curious to see these guys in exhibition.

Excellent point! Out here the snowboarders have a saying: If you ain't falling, you ain't trying. You've got to allow people to push themselves and know it's not only okay, but GOOD, to fail - up to a point of course. That point being when you see that they just aren't ever going to reach that level of ability no matter how much they try.

I'd like to ask everyone who demands this "perfection" from a young QB: Would you take a young Elway or Favre? Or how about a young Namath? There are certainly others, but these three were "gunslingers" who made a lot of mistakes. But they also did things that no one else could do - or would even try. I'm not saying that Petty is as good as these guys, but I feel safe in saying he's better than McCown, and maybe even better than Hack. Maybe Bowles & Co. know something really damning about him, but I think it's more likely that they're just clueless, and that's the thing that really bothers me.

So I guess Bowles figures that it's only because of the great talent of Anderson, and now Harper, that Petty is capable of playing? I'd further wager that Bowles has never heard of Occam's Razor.
