I 100% agree. I think if Landry can stay healthy we will be monsters against the run and force teams to throw the ball. Our dbs are among the best in the league and can force 3 and outs. I hope to see the 09 defense out here this season.

No doubt he won't be the #2 corner this year, but i'll still be interested to see if he can put that pressure on. If he's looking like he can legitimately compete for the job in 2013, that gives the Jets a lot more flexibility at the position, especially with the amount of cap space devoted to that position.

is there some inside joke on the spelling of incumbent that im missing?

i agree that its likely coples spot to lose ... i think devito goes inside on four man fronts in run situations only, tho

on passing downs, i expect to see a lot of 4 down linemen with some combo of pace, maybin, sapp at end, the primary tackles being wilk, coples, and the linebackers being harris (nickel, dime) and davis (nickel)

i dont think theres really a distinction b/w the fs and the ss in rex's system and i also dont think smith has the leg up on bell ... smith plays on every special teams unit and i think theyd rather use him as the third safety to keep him fresh

as long as he's healthy, i expect landry to be one of the starting safeties, irrespective of his current pup status

and i dont think davis would start anyway ... i think its best to start him off as the third down backer and special teams deamon. he could be a game changing gunner

++ S LaRon Landry (Achilles/heel) did not take part in either positional or team drills, instead working on the side with his jersey on. He was activated off the physically unable to perform list yesterday, and Ryan said he will be on a "pitch count" early in camp, but he that count is still at zero. Yeremiah Bell and Eric Smith worked with the first-team defense, while rookie Josh Bush and Tracy Wilson were the second-team safeties.

    Some notes from thejetsblog.com

Donnie Football – Donnie Fletcher is not a name many fans know, but in work with the backups the corner had some picks, passes defensed and if he can keep it up could really be in the mix. The real test for a player like Fletcher will come down to special teams, we’ll keep an eye out for that over the next few days.

Sapp Slap — During some of the team drills, Ricky Sapp had a very athletic move where he beat back his blocker (Paul Cornick) who fell backwards and Sapp went up to bat down the pass right at the line of scrimmage.

I think Cro would make a better FS than CB, however, your asking to throw a beer can at the TV when he whiffs on a tackle. Could you imagine seeing him try and tackle Gronk? I am laughing just thinking about it.

That being said, I would love to see him playing center field. Enough range to cover the width of the field on 30+ yard passes.

    LOL, Still literally laughing.

I'm praying to Tebow that Josh Bush picks up on the defense fast. He could be our best cover safety on the Roster

The reason FS and SS are the same in Rex's defense is Rex plays nickle so much with Wilson on the slot. Which means we only play with one safety much of the time anyway.

And Rex also plays a ton of Dime which means both safeties are on the bench cheering. I think I remember the game we beat NE in the playoffs Rex played like five DBs most of the game....no safeties at all, and one less LB to boot.

Seems like Rex only uses both safeties on true running plays, so both safeties can be more like SS. When there is even a hint of a pass play coming, out comes a safety and in comes Wilson.

Rex loves DBs. If he could figure out a way to play 11 of them, he would.

From what Ive read today, Ellis Lankster is REALLY impressive... All I kept reading was PBU after PBU. Also, Maybin and Sapp were great too.
