What's with using reason and logic here? Didn't you read the forum "rules of engagement"? Yes, 2020 was not a good draft for JD. That said, it was his first and as others have said, he was drafting for a completely different (terrible) HC and system. 2021 is looking great so far. I want to see how he does 2022 FA and Draft before I say he's terrible or great. Chances are that he does very well this off season and has the Jets turning the corner finally. If not, then the seat gets very hot for him.
Rarely do you see a safety that plays like Davis in the NFL. He doesnt belong. It's surprising they even let him on the field. I understand everyone is injured and Davis is like 5th string having to play but honestly they should have some respect for the league/sport and put someone else back there
He didn't specify trading up in the first round is a disaster unless it for a QB. It was simply trading up.
That's the opposite of good rebuilding. We gave up three 2nds when we took Sam and we gave up two 3rds when we took Zach. Both times we came away with too many holes in the roster. Trading up for a guard is a move already good teams can make. Not rebuilding teams. Also, AVT was barely ranked above other guards and the jury is out on who the best guard was. Were so beat down we call average good and good great on the Jets. Seriously, look around. After two offseasons do we have anyone who looks to be a pro bowler?
After what we have witnessed from GVT this year I will have to disagree with your assertion. Lesser importance than what?
It is a position of lesser importance when compared to OT or QB, but we have seen firsthand how terrible guard play can wreck an offensive line.
Lesser importance than almost every position. Obviously it's more important than Kicker or Punter but the funny thing is that you could make your same argument "After what we've seen from Ammendola, I have to disagree" Just because Van Roten sucks (who Douglas also handpicked by the way), doesnt make the position any more important
AVT definitely looks to be a probowler. You win with good players not building a team around average players. Guard is not a luxury pick when we had one of the worst o-lines in the league the year before. It is easy to say without context, AVT has been a big part in solidifying the o-line.
No you can't. a kicker misses a FG he does not get your franchise QB hurt. I am shocked after having the worst o-line in the league for two years this board is upset that we drafted a pro bowl level guard.
The offensive line shouldn't be looked at as individuals. They're truly the one unit on the football field that requires all 5 players to be competent and not suck ass. Most valuable positions in the modern day NFL: QB, OL, DL (edge included), WR/CB
It has worked out for us but it was a bad decision because usually doing what we did is -EV compared to keeping the picks. Process vs. outcome. You judge the process, not the outcome. A good process produces the most favorable results over time. A good outcome by chance can disguise a bad process. Yes, AVT's been good. But we had too many weaknesses on the OL to trade up. A massive % of our total pressures allowed were solely because of GVR, a guy we could've probably replaced had we kept the picks. GVR is largely the reason Wilson got the yips earlier in the season due to the constant pressure. Having a good OL is more about eliminating glaring weaknesses on the line rather than having studs at every position.
QB, Pass Rusher, Tackle. With all the draft collateral Joe Douglas has had, and will still have, between his team sucking and the Jamal Adams trade, if they don't end up with a good player at any of those positions then he failed this organization in a huge way. I dont care if Vera-Tucker becomes the greatest of all time at his position. (he wont).
I don't think the initial plan was to have GVR start the season. Alex Lewis was still under contract and was expected to report before he unexpectedly retired. You can add Cam Clark getting hurt to this as well. Douglas whiffed on OG in FA though.
It HAS to be looked at as individuals though. The differences in what individual positions cost, alone, is one major reason why. This type of cost/benefit analysis is the job of a general manager
He is not going to the pro bowl. It took 2 3rd round picks to get him, coulda gotten 2 decent guards for that and still kept the no. 23 overall pick
Our weak spots elsewhere on the line did a lot to hamper Wilson's development. We could've probably eliminated those weaknesses had we kept the picks. GVR alone was responsible for a huge % of our pressures allowed.
