There's a lot of circling going on in this thread. Trading up is stupid because we lost a pick! JD's drafting sucks and he had guys overrated! Well if his drafting sucks maybe it's a good thing he moved up for a stud lol. In all sports, when you have a guy you're locked in on you go and get him. We can argue all day whether that player was the right one to be locked in on. AVT was without a doubt the right guy to be locked in on. GVT single handedly destroyed that line for half the year. Guard is important no matter what experts and "value" claim. Anyone think the Colts regret taking Nelson at #6? We got a good player for once, let's try and enjoy it.
The Chiefs traded up for Mahomes and have won a Super Bowl. The Bills traded up for Allen and have made the playoffs twice in three years including a deep run last year. The Ravens traded up for Jackson and have made the playoffs in each of his first three years. The Eagles traded up for Wentz and won a Super Bowl after he lead them to the top seed before getting hurt. Not all trade ups are good, but not all are bad either.
Genuine improvement (not even talking about playing well here, just improvement) in a couple games after being god awful in most others does not make someone a starting safety heading into year three. The reason a guy struggles cannot consistently be that the talent around them sucks. This sort of excuse has been used for tons of Jets players over the past decade+ and then they end up out of the league never to be heard of again. That means they were just bad football players.
The Colts got an all pro guard that came with 3 second round picks. We got a starting guard that cost an extra two 3rd round picks. When you got to use picks 23, 66, and 86 to get a starter its no huge win. At that cost he should be a perennial all pro.
When you trade up you create all these phantom would-have-beens that mask tremendous structural deficits. We collapsed in 2012 out of a total deficit of homegrown stars. The stars we would have drafted accidentally when we made all those missing picks. We also had depth issues. Those would have been at least partly resolved if we didn't keep bundling picks to move up. Recently we've had depth issues in the OL and at TE and across the defense. This is what happens when you trade the #6 pick, 3 2nd round picks the #23 pick and 2 3rd round picks for a failed QB, an OL and 3 late round picks. The 2 of the 3 2nds we gave up for Darnold were high second round picks. Those are the picks you find TE's and quality OL and sometimes QB's on. If you look at the aggregate of the two recent trade-ups the Jets gave up 7 quality picks to take Darnold, AVT and eventually Jason Pinnock, Brandon Echols and Jonathan Marshall.
Can we stop with this? Did we have a pick in round 3? Are you going to argue that pick 66 and 86 were offset by pick 143? Come on man. That's just being an apologist.
I wanted Wilson and AVT all draft process. The Jets knew he would not drop to them, so they traded up. I was fine with it then, and even happier with it now. The real key here is the 2022 draft and off-season. The team that Joe Douglas fields in 2022 will say a lot about if his plan and process is working or not.
He's had 19 draft picks already. If you're waiting for the 10 next year to be the difference maker I have news for you. Hot mess last year: not so surprising. Hot mess this year: ??? And I don't mean losing. I mean how they're losing.
What, 5-23 isn't good enough for you? JD is a great horse trader and nice guy, but a terrible team builder. But for most it will take another year to finally admit it. That means its going to be a long 2022 season.
I would legitimately love to sit down and look at the tape of Davis together some time. Just want to see what you see
I pointed this out and he ignored it after telling me he's done extensive research on the topic. Maybe he'll respond to you because I'm interested to hear what his research tells him about this exact point.
I truly believe you have to watch him in person to understand how terrible he is. All-22 puts it into perspective I'm sure but jesus, watching him last week against the Eagles, he has NO football instincts whatsoever. It's almost as if he's a track star that someone tried to make a football player.
It's not about the 2022 class being a difference maker, it will be about the combination of them all working together as a team. Free agent additions too, plus the return of Carl Lawson and others. There will be no excuses to not be a successful team in 2022. They don't have to win the Super Bowl, but they definitely need to make a playoff push and hopefully make the playoffs. I see enough from this 2021 squad to see the bright future, but they still have many pieces to go.
I appreciate it but we don’t even have to go that far. We will likely know what is thought of him by Douglas and friends if we bring in two new safeties or not.
I believe that's what we were doing. The discussion was on trading up in the 1st round and Joe Douglas did it for a guard
There was a lot of the "Jets always". We say "Guard" like it is a lesser position. After I just drafted a QB at number 2, Damn right I am trading up for the best guard in the draft.
