Man I'm just happy that Manny is gone...I could give 2 shits about Bay...Manny was a killer and money in tough situations... THANKYOU.
I don't know who you are listening to but everybody on TV says Boston had no choice but to get him out of town as quick as they could. They would have taken a bowl of yesterday's soup to get it done. Bay is a good pickup but as everybody here and on TV says he is no Manny Ramirez and he never will be. Nobody will be afraid to walk Ortiz to pitch to him either so not only do you lose Manny you lose Ortiz in certain situations so it's a double loss.
For posterity, one of the finer Manny Being Manny moments. Ranks third on MY all-time list. Just behind the crazy cut-off, and the time he tossed the ball into the stands with two outs and left Pedro cracking up on the mound.
They weren't doing that anymore anyway. That's not part of this equation. TODAY Bay and Manny are equal hitters. Bay is a better fielder. The questions is whether compensation was equal. It wasn't. There just weren't any other options.
Bay might be good and underrated but he's not manny Ramirez. Manny meant more to Boston than just his incredible #s, they took his lead w/ his carefree attituyde. it's what helped Boston come back from 3-0 and 3-1 down in their last 2 ALCS. he means alot more to the Sox than just his #s and while Sox fans are trying to be positive(I would too) they know deep down this is an awful day for the Sox.
Bay and Manny are equal hitters? Are you totally insane? If you are talking about where their BAs are at this instant in time, that's one thing but to say they are equal hitters is just laughable.
Call it what you want, the Red Sox lost in this. I also understand that they really didn't have a choice though.
Though for the most part they have different needs, i mean the Red Sox aren't likely to add an OF, where the Yankees are, Sox might look at a MI, the yanks won't, catcher? Sox sure, Yanks doubtful unless Posada's injury is worse than reported. So really where it gets messy is pitching, though I doubt the Sox go after an Ace like Sabathia. 2010 is where it get's interesting
Equal in stats... Much different playing in Pittsburgh REPLACING Manny... Manny was a killer, a winner, and fearful at the plate...Jason Bay? Stop. Good player, but not even in the stratosphere of Ramirez.
for the first time ever it seem like Pittsburg actually got a nice package in return for the best players.
Rob Neyer, Peter Gammons, ken Rosenthal, I have no idea who on tv you are talking about, but if it's steve phillips that would make me feel even better about the deal since steve phillips is a moron. Edit- adding some more names. Joe sheehan
After what happened with the Yankee trade last week they had no choice. That trade almost kept this one from happening. Actually it did cause the Marlin trade to collapse.
I'm not hiding it at all. This is terrible. Not only did they overpay by a LOT, but they didn't improve a team that was in dire need of improvement in the bullpen. In fact, they gave UP a young arm with a mid to upper 90's fastball and a decent slider. Not saying he's been great, or even very good, but at this point they need all the arms out there they can get. To give up a bullpen arm to downgrade the offense AND make no other moves to get anything else that was lacking is completely unacceptable. FIRE EPSTEIN!
You missed that whole emphasis on the word "TODAY" and if I have to slow my posting down anymore than I did on that one I'll be typing in Hebrew. Manny TODAY - as in, for the Red Sox in 2008 - is no greater hitter than Jason Bay. Manny takes GAMES off. Manny doesn't want to play under his current contract. Manny wants to get to free agency, so he's tanking. Fershstay?
Yeah, but they had no choice. He had become pure poison to the team. I actually feel bad for Boston to some degree and will miss the matchups with Manny and his .500+ average against NY or whatever it was.
Manny did all that in Boston. Now he has something to prove again. Let's see who is better over the next two months. I know Boston had no choice but to do this but which one of those two would you rather have in the playoffs. Bay is batting .216 with RISP this year. Haven't looked it up but I would bet Ramirez was doing a bit better than that.
Of course they had a choice. I'm most upset that they did nothing to improve the bullpen than anything else. If they were going to overpay anyway, why not add another mid-tier prospect and get Grabow, or send the Dodgers a top prospect (Bowden?) and get Broxton? Even a totally separate deal. JUST DO SOMETHING! This whole thing is just stupid.
