With regards to the bold if the team lands a franchise QB does it really matter if said QB is left high and dry in a year or two? I know wouldn't care one bit as I know my team has the most important position in all of sports secure for possibly the next decade. As long as the GM believes he is getting a franchise QB, I don't care what draft he does it. People like to kill Tanny in hindsight which I will never understand. He was the architect of one of the best 3 year stretches of my lifetime as a Jets fan. I'll gladly trade 3 years of SB contention in exchange 3 years of slightly above bottom dwelling. Aside from that he also took his shot at getting that franchise guy. He failed miserably but I will always appreciate him going for it.
It matters. If you think it is depressing being capped at 8-10 wins without a franchise QB imagine what it is like to be a fan in Atlanta or Detroit and have the guy but not enough talent around him and be capped anyway? We're Jets fan so we're overly sensitive to not having a QB. There are franchises around the league that have the QB but can't get over the top because they don't have enough talent around him. Trading up to draft a guy who then sees Marshall, Mangold, Clady and Forte retire in his first few seasons on offense and Revis and Harris go on defense isn't going to win us more in 2018 than we're going to win this year with a stopgap QB.
It could accelerate the learning process though. By 2020, you'd hope that you can find a way to get some studs on the outside and in the running game.
