I just read in an article that Glennon holds the ball too long. If true, he would be a disaster behind the Jets' present OL and would not be a good fit. The Jets could very well set a new NFL record for the number of sacks give up.
I think this is a very under appreciated reason why it's critical to find a middle ground with Fitz. For all of his short comings, one huge strength in his game is the ability to hide poor o-line play. Whether it's through pre-snap adjustments, feeling and evading the rush, or just getting the ball out quickly, he was masterful this year at avoiding sacks. If you put Geno, Petty, a rookie or a tree like Glennon out there, you're going to let opposing defenses have a field day. Fitz is as much of a stopgap for the offensive line as he is for the quarterback position; hiding its deficiencies until we rebuild it.
What are some teams who could trade for Wilkerson? 49ers? Jaguars? Browns? Titans? They seem to be the ones with cap space. Maybe the Raiders? Buccaneers? Not sure who is in need of him either.
Jaguars signed Malik Jackson already. They're not going to trade for another DL at this point with one huge contract already there. The Raider's cap is full after signing Osmele and Irvin. The Bucs are probably not going to deal with us again so soon after the Revis fiasco. They've also got Gerald McCoy already locked up to a big deal that averages about $13M a season. The kind of deal we should have been able to do with Mo a year ago if he was really interested in playing for us long-term. The Titans, 49ers and Browns are all possibilities but the question is whether they're willing to pay Mo and whether he is willing to sign in those places.
I'd settle for a second round pick at this point. Need to clear his cap figure or negotiate a long term deal asap.
I am really curious to see Mo's next contract. Are Jets really being unfair to him or is he really looking for the richest defensive contract for a DL? I hope we don't let him go for cheap.
Raiders make the most sense to me. They are on the verge of contention and a player like Mo could push them over the edge. Raiders have made so many bad deals over the years, trading a 1st for Mo would actually be a good one, which is why it'll probably not happen.
I don't know about that. Reggie has been doing an awesome job as GM. I would love that trade (almost made it myself on the board mock) but right now their cap situation is in pristine shape for the next couple years. In 2 years they'll have to pay their qb qb money and they'll also have to pony up for one of the best defensive players in the league. They might put themselves in a bad position if they make the move. It would be a tough call either way..... On the other hand adding Mo as a veteran leader might take them to the next level
It would and wouldn't make sense for the Raiders for a variety of reasons. Building a front with speed rushers Mack and Irvin on the outside, nose tackle Dan Williams eating up double teams and Wilk sliding in to the 3technique would make for a hell of a pass rush, and possibly add in a run stuffing linebacker like Reggie Ragland. At this point it would eventually cripple their cap and they will have to pay their young players in Carr, Mack, and even Cooper down the road. They have seen teams going nuts in free agency pointing them in the direction of getting these extensions done before they're even in their contract year. Mo would just make that difficult, so I really don't see it happening. With everything they've been doing the Raiders should be a playoff team next year.
There is no long term deal that makes sense for the Jets at the money Mo is seeking. He will surely exceed what they are willing to pay and spend the remainder of his usefulness in some loser's backwater.
Yahoo! had a story today about the possibility of trading Mo to the Cowboys to move up from #20 to #4.
I want to trade him and get the 4th and keep our 20th.. Is that not possible? Does our 1st have to be packaged in the deal, cuz if so fuck that.
I'm still thinking that trading him for an early 2nd in the first 4 picks of the round (through 35) and getting some other consideration is a viable way to resolve the dilemma. That gives the Jets a prime pick in return for him while clearing more than enough cap space to handle their needs this season. It gives them a sniping chance at trading up into the back end of the 1st round to get the 5th year option on a QB if they like somebody better at 20 and still want the 5th year option available for the QB they'd take in the early 2nd anyway. I'm not sure if 36 or 35 is the right capping number for a QB this year. If you look at where 2nd round QB's have historically been taken it's really only the first 4 picks of the round that turn into stars. However with no 1st round pick for the Pats this year you could argue that 5 picks into the 2nd round is still a good spot. The problem is whether or not it's the 4 bad teams picking in the first 4 picks of the round that is the major factor and not the first 36 players taken in the draft. I'm thinking it's the desperate losers passing twice on a QB that tells us that he's not likely to be a star. On the other hand the Titans have Mariota in hand and so maybe you can fudge a slot. The Cowboys and the Chargers were both bad last year and both have a highly respected vet at QB but I'm thinking they take a great QB prospect anyway because their vets are going ancient any day now.
They don`t have the cap space to sign Mo long term. Plus they why would they want Mo when they can get a top tier talent like Miles Jack , Jalen Ramsey.
Trading Mo and the 20 for the 4 would be another way out of the dilemma. You can't look at it as the 20 + Mo for the 4. You have to look at it as the 20 + Mo for the 4 and $15.7M in cap relief. That's a much better deal than it would be in a vacuum if the cap was not a consideration.
This is purely about fitting talent better and cap space. Mo is a better asset than anybody the Jets are likely to get on the 4 until that person proves out. Jack + $15.7M in cap space is only better than Mo if Jack is as good as people think he is, which is a 60/40 proposition at that slot in the draft. Jack + $15.7M in cap space is unlikely to be as good as Mo + the 20 in any scenario short of Jack being one of the best edge rushers in recent history. Even then it may be a deal the Jets have to do for the cap space. Cap hell is cap hell and the Jets are in it, as evidenced by them having to get rid of a young prime player while aging vets soak up too much cap space.
