I'm surprised people are against this trade. We dealt potential trash from a position of depth for a potential starter at a position of need. At best, Strait was the 8th DB on the depth chart (Rhodes, Coleman and Smith ahead at Safety and Dyson, Miller, Barrett and Mickens ahead at CB). With a fresh start, his career on the line, and a team desperate for a running game, Suggs has the potential for a solid season.
I wouldn't put Coleman in with the other two. Coleman is avg at best. Rhodes and Cotchery are up and coming, Coleman is someone I'd like to see replaced.
I like this deal. It's not like Strait hasn't been given the opportunity to secure consistent playing time with the Jets--he hasn't earned it. He's never been that impressive on the field. We certainly don't need him at safety and I guess that Mangini/Sutton have enough faith in Justin Miller and Ray Mickens that we don't need him at cornerback, so kudos to Tannenbaum for being able to turn him into a runningback who can fill a major need for us.
completely agreed, theyre just too nervous, our FO that is. Suggs is no better than anyone on our roster IMO. and if he is he wont be healthy long enough to prove it. shouldve kept strait, he was another reason to not have to draft a CB. oh well, the as the world turns
I have rarely agreed 100% with this guy, but this time I agree 100% with this guy. Strait was a nice college player but was brought in to be the heir apparent at the #3 CB position. Not even a starter. He's nothing special, but Suggs IS special when healthy. Let's just hope he can stay healthy. If he can, our first round of the 2007 draft just got alot more interesting.
We have so much depth at CB he was probably going to be cut anyway. Might as well get something for a player that was probably going to be cut.
Strait couldn't cover the Jets WR's in camp this year. He looked, well, lousy to me. I saw him get beat consistantly. We lost nothing, and got Suggs. What's to complain about?
Shocking.....I would have never guessed so many people would still be high on Strait. This guy has proven very little since he's been here and now the competition is worse then ever bringing in andre dyson and drafting eric smith. He had no future with us and instead of letting him rot or play limited minutes we get a guy who has the potential to fill a big need for us. He may not stay healthy, but given straits future with our secondary how can you NOT try this deal. We would have never secured Ladell Betts, Chris Brown, or Michael Turner in such a fashion. This, on paper, seems easily like the best move for the team. With a little luck he will help balance our attack and make jet's football remotely interesting to watch this year.
Well, if Mangini does any thing like belicheck, losing a defensive player like strait is not gonna kill us. If you look at straits stats, they don't exactly wow you. Shit, I've seen guys get cut with better stats. Suggs salary is right where you want it also, and your not taking him on long term. Remember we are rebuilding, and no matter how high you are, we are just that, rebuilding. I agree with most people suggs is a bum, but I would rather a plethra of rb's to keep 'em fresh.
i would have rather got a bigger back. hes about 213lbs but looks solid. this better not mean we wont be drafting a rb early next draft.
Strait was expendable by the return of Mickens and the emergence of Drew Coleman. He just doesnt have the recovery speed to be a quality man coverage type CB. W/ the crowd at the safety position and the time iut'd take him to truly grasp the position, It was wise to get value for him before his possible release. Suggs has proven to be a productive starter when healthy. Immediately, he maybe the fastest player on our team, and if he stays halthy could be a long term fix. The best part of this trade is we didn't give up a draft pick, and the move offers alot of upside for us, and solves a crowded defensive backfield dilemna.
mickens career is as good as over, hes a solid player but in all reality this will prolly be his last year unless the FO wants to be lazy and convince themselves hes a thorough fill in. strait was very solid depth at CB. Mickens is almost like a Testaverde solution as a DB. im not trying to beat up on him cuz hes a decent player, but I'm saying Mickens doesnt even really count if were thinking about changing the roster NOW to be competitive. which would be indicative of trading for a RB. suggs wont be on the roster next yr if he is he takes houston or blaylocks spot. cause they'll be drafting one with the top pick if not their 2nd. simply put, this trade worked out in the benefit of the browns in the long run, IMO.
Suggs is now the biggest and fastest RB on our roster. An earlier poster said he looks like a LB, and he does, just much faster. We're pinning our hopes on an injury plagued QB, so why not bring the RB to the party. Suggs is the kind of guy that can break a run for a TD following the first play after the kickoff. How long has it been since we had that? I even like the stable we have at RB already, but Suggs is better than all of them, including Curtis, if he stays healthy.
This begs the question.. If these RB's on our roster are THAT bad or that mediocre, why the hell have they not been cut yet by either regime? We have Askew, Blaylock, Houston, Washington and perhaps Martin. We HAD Lamont Jordan who arguably was better than Blaylock, Houston and Washington combined. Why has the RB spot on this team been so badly mismanaged? Why do we find ourselves in such desperate straits (pun here...) as to go sign another IR veteran to a Roster already well stocked with IR Veterans? What is the point of having Suggs anyway? How many games do you think this trade will swing? I say none. Absolutely none. We're no better off today with Suggs as we would have been with Strait. Pray the man stays off the IR this season. We already have enough "glass" on the roster as it is...
Like I said, this is the year that we judge the RBs. If anyone make significant progress throughout the season, we either continue with him in the future, or we draft a RB in 2007. Between 5 runningbacks, I'm sure someone will breakout.
I'm not sure why people don't actually like this deal. Strait was deemed not good enough to play CB (and when he was healthy, we saw he was, at the very best, an average nickelback), and he was moved to a position where there are two players better than him, maybe three. We basically gave up nothing, and in return, we got a RB who, while he has a problem staying healthy, can be a very good back when he is 100%. At the worst, we gave up nothing for nothing. At the most, we gave up useful depth at safety for a young, starting caliber RB.
OK, so now we know why Strait started at Safety. The Jets wanted to showcase him, but did not want to expose his inability to cover as a CB. So, throw him out there as a safety. Slick move. Yes, they like Drew Coleman a lot. Suggs does have the abilty to be a feature back, but every time he was given the chance, he got hurt. So, we'll see. Washington is just like Blaylock, but better. So, it's Houston or Blaylock that could get cut. Hey, I kind of liked Strait, but he just wasn't very good. If he can't cover McCariens, who can he cover? He's not big enough to be a safety either. The guy is just too slow, period. Cleveland was desperate for a CB. Good trade for both teams, better fo us.
This is a fantastic deal. Suggs is AT WORST a great change of pace back for Houston, and at best a good starter. Strait was considered a steal in round 3, Suggs was considered a big steal in round 4. The difference is: Strait was considered a guy with a very high floor but a low ceiling. We expected him to be at worst a nickel back, at best a #2 corner, but he hasn't even done that. He was supposed to be pretty good from the start, and he's really below average physically. Suggs has the complete physical package to start. I loved him in college, and I still think he can do it. As bad as our offensive line might be, it's still a lot better than Cleveland's. Besides, Cleveland's franchise is cursed when it comes to injuries. Maybe a change of scenery will help him out. He's immediately better than Houston and Blaylock when he's healthy. I hope he knows how to pick up the blitz better than they do because if he does and he picks up the offense, he's definitely our best back until he gets hurt. When healthy, he gives us our first possible playmaker on offense. And all we gave up was a guy in Strait who was just as good as Drew Coleman or Ray Mickens, so I don't really think we lose anything there. Plus, he's getting moved to safety, so that shows that we didn't like him that much. We don't really have a need at safety, anyway. Smith, Rhodes, Coleman, and Washington are sufficient.
