Yeah, that's the problem. Although now ESPN is reporting that one of the Boston papers says Buchholz wasn't included in Boston's offer. If that's the case then they haven't offered a thing yet. If Lee gets traded today the pressure really falls on Toronto to keep him or trade him for much less then they want and probably within the division. How long do you think Ricciardi would last if he does that?
Phillies trade for Lee complete...so says ESPN. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4363553 "Triple-A right-hander Carlos Carrasco, Single-A righty Jason Knapp, catcher Lou Marson -- the likely heir apparent to Victor Martinez -- and shortstop Jason Donald will be sent to Cleveland." They basically get him without giving up either of their best pitching prospects. This also seems to take Martinez out of trade talks for now. This now makes the whole Halladay thing scarier. Especially since the Post says the Yankees aren't interested. Of course we have heard that before about Teixiera too. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/32205179/ns/sports-player_news/
I would think if anything this would increase the chances of Martinez getting traded. Cleveland is basically punting on 2010 and if they have another catcher in place it might be best to trade V-Mart now.
The Jays better rape whoever they trade Halladay to.....Yanks or Red Sox...it doesn't matter. Fleece em'!
I still don't see Halladay going to the Sox without Ricciardi at least going to the Yankees and trying to play both sides off of each other. He'd be a fucking idiot not too...
Actually he might be an idiot if he did. Look at the shit the Twins ended up with for Santana when they tried to pull that. Both teams said "screw you" and the Twins had to take garbage.
But that was during the offseason, when both teams could comfortably say that they were (relatively) happy to stand pat. Harder to do that now in the middle of a playoff race, when each team's needs have been more clearly established. Both the Sox and the Yanks have more incentive to make that deal happen (or to prevent the other one from making that deal happen) than they did with Santana.
Uhh...no the smart idea would be to play both teams against each other right before the deadline. It's really easy to say screw you when its the off-season and you can answer with another move. Besides...the twins weren't moving Santana to any a.l. team. It wasn't happening.
Ricciardi says Jays keeping Halladay..now and for the rest of his contract. We'll see. http://bases.newsvine.com/_news/200...laday-this-year-and-next-year?category=sports "J.P. Ricciardi puts the genie back in the bottle: J.P. Ricciardi said he now not only expects Halladay to be a Blue Jay for the rest of this season, but for the rest of his contract, which runs through next year. "I would have to talk to ownership, but I personally would be less inclined to trade him in the offseason," Ricciardi said when reached by phone by the Post. "I would think let's put our best foot forward in 2010. We expect to get our injured pitchers back (such as Shaun Marcum and Jesse Litsch) and let's try to win.'
A rotation of Marcum, Halladay, Rzepczynski, Romero is nothing to scoff at. JP would be doing the Toronto fan a disservice if he were to trade Halladay.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4363900 Wilson and Snell traded to Seattle... Any chance that Seattle now moves Wilson to Boston?
I have to say, if Toronto doesn't trade Halladay I'll be very impressed. They started off great this year, and who knows what the winter will bring. If they want to commit 100% to winning next year, keep him, and do everything you can in the offseason to compete. Of course, it sucks for them to be in the AL East, but screw it. There's a chance they can get it done, and these days, that's hard to say in the ALE. Especially when you consider that it's not just the Sox and Yanks, but also those young talented Rays baby!
He can't possibly trade him now for anything less than a "wowem" offer. Especially to another ALE team. Outside of the east the only teams are the Dodgers and Texas and they don't have the ammo to get it done. He will get villified by the press for not getting it done though.
Mann this sucks! according to ESPN Philly got Lee and still kept their top 3 prospects! I was hoping they had to give their whole system to get him!
I'd much rather the Blue Jays keep Halladay since the Sox have a much better chance of nabbing him then the Yankees....
Litsch was hurt all year, even when he was pitching. He is a VERY good player, so if I was a BJays fan, I'd be excited for next year. Halladay McGowan Litsch Marcum Rzepczynski Romero Richmond That is some VERY nice rotation depth for 2010. The BJays still need a closer, as Downs has proven over and over in the last 2 weeks he is not the answer.
