Wrong. You averaged those wins because of your great coaching staff and QB. Please enlighten us on the studs (scratch that, AVERAGE players) you've drafted in the past 5 years outside of Gronk/Hernandez and your kicker. Your '06-'08 drafts are prob some of the most atrocious drafts of the past decade. '09 looks better by default, but still shitty.
This is exactly the kind of thinking that keeps the Jets dependent on free agents every year. They need to let some of their young guys on the field. Not just the cherry-picked guys but the guys they've invested other picks in over the last few seasons. If they come to the conclusion that they haven't drafted enough guys to do that then they need to change their organizational approach to talent acquisition, not take another swig off the same bottle that has them swaying now. The idea of signing a free agent LB who is an average player at best instead of giving guys like Westerman and Mauga and Bellore a full shot is just feeding the problem. The old pro comes in and takes snaps, because he's an old pro, away from the guys you need to develop.
Either starters or major contributors: Solder Vollemer McCourty Mayo Spikes Chung Gostkowski Then throw in the best TE in the NFL along with the most versitle TE in the NFL, and you get some very good drafts. Who have the Jets drafted since Revis?
You're talking about a bunch of undrafted free agents (Syracuse, Central Michigan, Nevada), they aren't even late round picks. They've proven nothing more than capable situational and special teams players so far. These are the guys you want to go to war with over the course of the season when we have an opportunity to fill a hole with a proven starting quality player at a relatively low cost? If these undrafted jags are good enough to beat out the old pro, they should get a chance to play.
Yeah but if the Jets sign the old pro the young guys won't get a chance to beat him out. It's in the Jets DNA to do whatever they have to to keep management from looking bad right up to the point that everything collapses and there's no other choice. When was the last time the Jets signed a stopgap vet and a young guy beat him out?
Not when they hadn't one a Super Bowl since 2004. That's like not having sex for 7 years yet bragging to your buddies that you had sex with a hot chick 7 years ago. Who really gives a shit.
McCourty, Spikes and Chung contributed to one of the most mediocre defenses in the league. Being starters or 'major contributors' to something like that is, uh, not something to brag about. And if your standards are so low, add the following to Revis - aka the absolute best defensive player in the league, and possibly the best cornerback in the history of football: Harris, Sanchez, Greene, Wilson, Wilkerson, Kerley, McKnight, Slauson, who all have either been starters or 'major contributors' to their team. Think up your arguments better if you're going to brag, because right now you're half-assing it.
So 5 years worth of drafts and you managed to snag a decent at best RT, a CB who allowed the most yards in NFL history, a safety who the majority of Pats fans can't stand, a kicker who I already mentioned. Mayo is a very good player, completely omitted him, my fault. 'very good drafts' is this a joke? Even the most biased Pats fans would agree Belichick hasn't drafted well in forever. You got 2 solid TE, an ILB and a couple of role players in a span of 6+ years. Does that sound like good drafting to you? Lets conversely look at the Jets drafts since '06 (remember you made the parameters 5 years, so '06 to '10--we'll omit '11 since the rookies only had 1 year under their belt, so it's not enough time to accurately judge a player) '06 Mangold, best center in the NFL Brick, top 5 LT in the NFL Eric Smith, garbage safety but still manages to start for us somehow, similar to Chung Won't be a part of this list but Drew Coleman, Leon Washington, and Brad Smith were excellent role players for us before they were signed/traded elsewhere **As an aside, now that I look at this draft, this may be one of the best in the team's history. '07 Revis-Best CB in the NFL Harris-On Mayo's level-not an elite ILB, but a pretty darn good one '08 Keller-800+ yd receiving TE The rest of this draft was garbage '09 Sanchez Greene Slauson Greene and Slauson are both average at worst. I'm not gonna sit here and debate Sanchez. You either think he sucks or he's merely adequate. He's not a bust though and if we're talking about 'contributors' as you put it, then he needs to be on this list. '10 Wilson-Very good nickel CB, and would be a few team's #2 if it weren't for Revis and Cro. Would take him over McCourty in a heartbeat as a comparison. McKnight-Best kick returner in the NFL per stats. As a RB is still undetermined. Conner-Top 10 FB according to ProFootballFocus and Football Outsiders. Idk TX, looks like pretty solid drafting to me especially compared to the Pats.
I admit this is a really weak example because it's very possible there were other factors than level of play involved, but what about kerley and mason? I can't analyze this right now for a better example maybe later. Maybe there are none.
Wow, with all those great draft picks, you'd think the Jets would have dominated the AFCE for years instead of finishing a mediorce 8-8 and missing the playoffs. Too bad all your "great" draft picks do not translate into success on the football field.
Since the problem didn't start overnight, the solution won't come overnight either. Still, the correct way to address would be to STOP TRADING THE PICKS AWAY like Tannenbaum has been doing for years. Jets should get two instant starters in 1st 2 rounds, and then get a 2-3 year project players with 3~6 round pick, and with 7th, who knows? Preferably, both offense and defense should get one instant upgrade, then OL/DL/OLB/Safeties/WRs should be filled based upon BPA in round 3 through 6. In the mean time, let the stop-gap players run their course out, and weed them out in 2 years. Adding more of the stop-gap players is counterproductive no matter how you look at it.
Oh Zing!!! Too bad you've got only about two years left to have Brady try to carry a pretty mediocre team one more time. And then you can become the 49'ers after Young for the next decade. Cheers. Enjoy the cheated to victory Super Bowls.
I mostly agree but signing short term stop gaps now shouldn't effect NOT trading away draft picks. In fact, i think not having stop gaps is more likely to lead to tannenbaum trading picks away.
That's right. Because two Super Bowl losses book-ending a missed playoff berth followed by 2 straight first-game playoff nut-shots is an amazing accomplishment. Pile up those runner-up prizes, they may let you touch that dynasty status again if you stretch your arm as long as it goes holding a ten foot pole. In 50% gravity.
If that was solid drafting the last 5 years, then why did the Jets finish 8-8 and miss the playoffs? And also, over the last 5 years, I'll take the Pats average wins of 13 over the Jets average wins of less than 9 per year. The only purpose of the draft is too build your team for success on the field, and not to have "the best player" for conversational purposes only.
We've got what two extra picks this year? I wouldn't hate trading up a middle pick...maybe 3+4 or 3+5 if they think the move up might produce a 3rd immediate contributor as opposed to two hopefully's and one probably not. I'd want to make at least 8 picks though I think to try to address some role player positions (i.e. blocking TE option to cover tail on Cumberland, etc). Just as long as there isn't some bold first round trade up this year Tanny can do whatever he thinks is proper as far as I'm concerned. I seriously doubt he's looking at all of these potential value players falling to us and juicy trade back offers, thinking about doing some crazy trade up. Give the guy some credit.
As soon as the inevitable brady decline hits we'll see how great the patriots drafts have been. The jets would likely have won at least one ring the last 3 seasons with a Brady. You have to be delusional to think your success isn't mostly because of brady.
