So I guess the Chargers suck cuz they didnt make it to the playoffs last yr. This whole back n forth thing is pointless. I dont blame you for arguing a case for your team cuz one could be argued. But to say we have no ground to criticize the recent lack of success of the Raiders just because we havent been to the Super Bowl in forever? Lets use common sense to solve this. As far as I remember this time last yr analysts and writers were mentioning the Jets as SB candiddates. Now media buzz means nothing but it means we were in an obvious enough position to succeed that people wrote about us. The injuries we suffered were a LARGE part of our ensuing 4-12 record. You guys have a healthy Collins, Jordan, Moss, Porter. Theres no room for excuses there. And your defense rolled over, I'm sure you guys are waiting for the young pups on DL to show up while Sapp is still alive. Burgess is a GREAT player though. So lets go to today, both teams rebuilding, the Raiders are in the same shape as the jets. But you will see the media bash the Raiders more because theyve had their 3 "rebuilding" yrs. this is our first. thats the biggest difference. So go ahead and defend your team, dont blame you. If I was a Raider fan id want Al Davis put in a home though.
Do you work for Fox News? This post is "fair and balanced", hats off to you! The only point I'll quibble with is Al Davis. I certainly don't agree with everything he does, and they'd be better off if he and Gruden could have put their egos aside a couple of years ago (no, Chuckie was not blameless in that situation, but I digress). Nonetheless, I think "real" Raider fans still like Davis, without him the Raiders would have just been another team, and probably would not even have survived the AFL's early years. And he has made enough good moves recently, including the Moss trade, Burgess signing, etc., to tell me that he still has his fastball. But the Turner hire was uninspired, that's for sure, and it definitely set them back a couple of years.
There a couple mistakes in your Post. First Raiders did have major injuries that did effect the way they played. 1OLB Sam Williams- they were counting on him to be a big part of defense and he was lost for the season .(in preseason) Without him, it forced the Raiders, to tryand play two DEs 6'6 285 T brayton at LB and G Irons as OLBs. Teams picked on them in coverage and forced the raiders to play the BIG nickel defense alot.(now your playing smaller and are suspectible to run) 2 CB/fs C woodson andSS/lb D Gibson- They were Raiders most experienced players and were to be the glue, for a very very young secondary. Raiders biggest problem on defense was not enough of OLBs and LBs that could cover. TEs and Rbs killed Raiders all year. Its no coincidence that Raiders have addressed OLB and have alot of LB now that can cover. Offense injuries- 1.Randy Moss after impressive start, was severly hurt in fifth game. HE was never anywhere close to healthy the rest of the season. It was so frustrating to see R Moss catch a slant pass and normally would have taken it to house. Defenders caught him from behind. (he couldn't run) 1a. Ronald Curry- tore his achilles again very early. Curry probably Raider slowest WR speed wise, but was Raiders most consistant WR gaining seperation from a defender. (Very reliable third down option) 2 Langston Walker 6'8 340 was just starting to really come on at LG. The offensiveline as whole was playing it best football(ran very well against a very good Dallas defense) Than he had a fluke injury and was lost for season. Raiders offensiveline was never the same after he went down. 3 C J Grove had assortment of injuries. This forced the Raiders to play A treu who probably is the worst run blocking center in football. Tough to do anything, when dTs are throwing this guy back into raiders backfield. Raiders problems on offense was 1. OLine. Raiders young Oline were one best pass blocking team in 2004. They changed the blocking scheme from a man on man(Personal was better suited to play) to a zone blocking scheme. Raiders couldn't pass block anyone in 2005. ART Shell changes the blocking scheme back to man on man and changed the personal around to betterutilize the talent. 2. Norv Turner didn't have a clue what type of offense they wanted to be. AT Least Callahan had a plan- he was going to be a pass team first and throw off the run. Norv gameplan changed week to week. Nobody was sure, if they were wanted to play power football or be a passing team. Its inexcusable with the raiders strength at Wr, that turner went for a good stretch , playing two TEs majority of time. 3. NORv Turner wouldn't let Collins throw to the middle of the field.(as doing research found out most of his interceptions came when he threw to the middle) You look at Collins numbers first half of the season , his TD to interception was quite impressive. (was at alltime low for him) Only when raiders were out of playoffs, that Norv released those restrictions, and look at how many he threw in second half. 4 . Raiders didn't utilize the short passes enough, to set up the long passes. Teams were playing so far off the Raiders WR(especially Moss) That they had easy 6-8 yards completions if they took them. Everything waas deep to less than healthy Moss or dump off to L Jordan. With the Raiders firepower at WR theres no way L Jordan should have 70 receptions. I think you will see a way better offense for raiders this year because Everyone know what the gameplan is now, Oline is back to blocking scheme- they are best suited to play,They have a more mobile QB A Brooks- he should be able to buy a second or two more(thats all it mighttake) and last they have a Pass rush specialist opposite D Burges- lance Johnstone. Im more excited about Raiders defense this year, than raiders offense. This is best defense Raiders have put out there insometime.
It's so funny to see the intelligent and unbiased Raider fan NJRaider almost agree with a completely fair post, then to see the moron blame it all on the coach. The Jets would've been a different team over the years with a better coach than Edwards. But you can't discredit your coach for the fact that your defense was absolutely pitiful and all your team could do was throw downfield.
one name Rich Gannon ! Jon Gruden was smart leaving O town he knew he couldnt get a ring in Oakland !
Yep... The diffrence is mangold will be the next mawae and grove is who? Ferguson will make an immediate impact while gallery is still what? Your defense is no where near our defense period... We have been 12th 2 years in a row and getting better, where were the raiders? Our offense has been the worst but we are getting better... And any team with a good defense and atleast an average offense has a chance, can't say that about the raiders... Your offense was supposed to be this high octane instead it was high on weed... And your defense is one of the worst.
Oh boy, another Nostradamus. For the 90th time, Gallery had a damn good rookie year, I guess he's a bust because he was on the right side instead of the left for two years. Ogden started at guard early in his career. Fergusen coming out isn't ranked as highly as Gallery or Ogden were and you're assuming he'll be better that Gallery already? Mangold will be the next Mawae? Well if that's how we scout around here I'd like to announce that Grove is the "new" Jim Otto.
You had that same smug tone when you bestowed upon us that knowledge that the Raiders were going to crush the Jets this past season. And then you didn't show back up for a month. Remember that, jeaux?
Hey guys you didn't answer the question I asked before. Why are you hanging out on a Jets board? Are you NYJ fans in the closet? Atleast guys like DirtyWater and MexicanBuc actually know what they're talking about...
NO Im a Raider fan. A couple of my relatives(Dad and brother in law are Jet season ticket holders . THe disagreements we have on this board, is mild than at the Family gatherings. Diffrence is I have seen the Jets as much as you have (Have to get my digs ready for family gatherings - Tivo games) Stay up on Jets to get my material ready. your not going to put anything past me. Unlike you who maybe see one or two Raider games. I know both rosters and LMAO that Jet fans actually think they have more talent than the raiders. OH forgot Mangini following the Bellichik blueprint. Problem your coaching staff better be great, to pull it off. IF not the team with best talent usually wins. (unfortunately for you Woody johnson went for cheapest and less experienced. NOw im still waiting for your response on this. JMO Mistake your making is your going by just stats and not going by what you' seen. Listen you look up C Woodson stats and they aren't that impressive. Reason teams never challenged him and would throw to the other side. (reason Greenbay rewarded with BIg contract despite his inability to stay healthy) Now getting back to F Washington versus J Miller. Here are the Facts 1. F Washington played alot more time,(saw field alot more) than J miller( D barrett and Ty Law were your starting CBs) F washington about after 4 games was starter at CB(C woodson was lost for season). 2 IF F Washington was on the field so many more times ,why was J miller (less time) had more tackles than F Washington. Simple explanation is that WR were catching more passes on J miller and teams weren't challenging washington. Teams weren't challenging F washington, half because his coverage was good and the fact that Raiders didn't have anyone that could match up to TE(Renaldo Hill) and they would take there chances there. This dosen't prove anything as its just one person opinion, but sporting news 2006 Draft. Here what grade they give for both players. F Washington B developed into a reliable starter Justin Miller c+ explosive kickoff returner needs to refine skills at CB. I used it because it one mans opinion that I agree with, and it what I witness watching both players last season. Simply what Im asking is you say F washington numbers are similiar. HOw do you explain F Washington (starting) a good part season and J miller having more tackles playing a alot less time.(Was nickel CB behind Law and Barrett) Do you remember how many tackles T buch had the year before. It seemed everytime a team needed a pass completed they would target T Buck. That why Im telling you can't judge a CB worth by just comparing numbers.
As a whole, I would agree that right now the Raiders have more talent than the Jets. By October 1, 2005 the Raiders had more talent on the field than the Jets and each team wound up with 4 wins. Talent alone doesn't result in wins.
I'm here because I'm local and I have a lot of friends who are Jet fans. And there have been a lot of common threads to discuss in the last year, including Jordan, Jolley, etc. As I said before, I've never come here with a provacative thread about how the Jets suck or how the Raiders are going to kick their ass. When there's a thread concerning the Raiders and I think someone's off base, I speak up. If you think I don't know what I'm talking about, let me hear it. I'm a pretty level headed poster for the most part. Dirty Water is a good poster too and he comes over to the Raider board once in a while. I don't think that makes him a closet Raider fan.
I Just think you making too much out of meaniless game in December. Now if two teams were playing for something, and you won , than you take something more out of victory. (I don't think you will get Tuiasosopo gift again. Fact Is Raiders had very tough schedule early and were 3-5 .(could have won one or two games more easily). They lost a very tough game to KC to make them 3-6. Playoffs possibilities become alot slimmer. Was it supprising, Raiders win only one more game, the rest of season, against the Redskins(as that game had alot more meaning for N turner). Only game the rest of way , they played at a high level.(Beat Redskins on road , when Redskins were playing for something) You can say its making excuses, but there level of play ,down the stretch ,was alot diffrent than it when they were still playing for something. BTW Thats why I don't take as much stock in Dolphins record down the stretch. This wasn't the Carolina Panthers, who beat some very good team late to finish the season( a couple years ago). They beat alot of bad teams, playing for nothing. Thats why Im not big believer in Dolphins just yet and will be intresting to see how much was the Dolphins wins down the stretch, the Dolphins, or the other teams mailing it in.
I meant when the season started the Jets may have had better talent than Oakland. Then the Jets had a slew of players go down to injuries. By early October the Raiders now put better talent on the field than the Jets. They both wound up with the same record.
