No, he isn't. Dude, you don't know jack about football and every time you post you show how ignorant you are. The Jets' OL wasn't anywhere near ready for the season. The Jets were trying to keep Wilson from getting killed behind that OL in preseason. Your anti-Zach and JD agenda is taking on ridiculous depths of desperation.
Man, stop it. Zach wasn’t ready to start. The game was too fast. And that’s ok. He has a high ceiling, but he’s years away from realizing that potential. Needs better weapons around him especially a TE.
If the Jets didn't think the OL was ready to go they shouldn't have started Zach at all. You can't have it both ways.
Well since the title above refers to Wilson, not young players in general, and the comment you responded to was a direct response to one regarding Wilson, I won't waste any time arguing that point. Historically players got worked into games when the outcome was evident which both preserved existing quarterbacks and gave the new guys valuable game experience; why this is no longer the case is another question. Flacco may be the best QB on the team but White may also be - his performance was quite mixed, but that's certainly nothing we didn't see all season. As far as what different iterations of the NYJ have accomplished there has been scant success; while we shouldn't try to fix that which is not broken, everything here is broken - including or especially forcing Wilson onto the playing field when he was clearly not prepared to run an NFL offense..
This is the most important point. The Jets have repeatedly forced young QB's onto the field and then failed to develop them much after that unfortunate act. To do it again with Zach Wilson was just insanity. Give Zach a few years leading the scout team and maybe there is a small chance he turns into Aaron Rodgers. Put him on the field immediately and he is most likely just Mark Sanchez/Sam Darnold all over again. Good teams find ways to find the hidden potential in players and work around those players flaws in the process. Bad teams just do the same sad shit over and over again.
You're right - I don't get the idea that the team should concede any game when the entire premise of the league is to win every game possible. In order to do so player development cannot take precedence over the goal of winning each game. The only commitment any NFL team should be making is to prioritize winning each game they play. You can call it "dumb" if that floats your boat but that certainly doesn't make it so, it simply illustrates how close minded some people are. It's wonderful that you're so sure of the future that you can completely disregard any contingencies, like Douglas did in starting the season without an experienced backup.
You should be embarrassed, as a supposed competent adult, to call others "ignorant" simply because their viewpoint on something totally inconsequential to the lives of anyone here is different than your own.
Of course, the answer as to why he didn't play as much is a shortened preseason and not wanting to risk an injury considering we did not really have a vet option, JJ was obviously not really seriously considered as he was out used by Morgan in the final scrubs game. Wilson was the most used QB in game 2 and started Game 1 and was then removed after the first series, if memory serves. So the actual problem of Wilson being held out doesn't really exist at all, does it?
Good point. wilson shoulda been getting every single snap in the preseason while they got someone else ready to start in the regular season
it would not be dumb, it would be smart and refreshing. Wilson was what 31st in the league at his position? Imagine if we had the 2nd worst tight end in football, everyone would be clamoring to bring in an established veteran tight end and bench that player. Why is it different when it’s Zach Wilson? not to mention Wilson himself lost his job in college, fought to get his job back and it was great for his career
Here is a list of pass attempts this last preseason for the rookie QBs and their competition: Mac Jones had 52 attempts Justin Fields had 49 attempts Trevor Lawrence had 44 attempts Trey Lance Lance had 41 attempts James Morgan had 35 attempts. Gardener Minshew had 29 attempts Mike White had 28 attempts Andy Dalton had 21 attempts Cam Newton had 21 attempts Zach Wilson had 20 attempts Jimmy Garrappalo had 16 attempts Josh Johnson had 8 attempts As you can see Zach only had more attempts than Jimmy G. and Josh Johnson, and less than half as many as the other rookies. We gave up 5 sacks in 4 games. If memory serves, every week it was announced that was the week our opponent would be resting their defensive starters. So we kept saying we never get to see Zach against starters. This kind of makes the "our o-line wasn't good enough to play Zach yet" look like bullcrap. We coddled Zach in preseason because we were afraid he'd get hurt or damage his confidence - which is a strange way to handle a 2nd overall pick. He did look good in limited action, but it was against sub NFL talent. Once the season started we saw the truth.
Barring unusual circumstances, such as health issues, Zack Wilson will be the starter at QB for the Jets in 2022. He will also be the starter for the whole season unless he plays horribly. Finally, he won't take too many snaps in pre-season as to avoid injury, just like last season. I know this is my opinion and the opinion of others here, but it's also the most likely scenario by far, based on a realistic assessment of the situation.
Hey! 20 pass attempts in pre-season and then right onto the field! That's Jet's football for you. It's one of the reasons we blow chunks regime after regime.
This is the Jet's strategy and I don't see anything wrong with it. If they had done the opposite strategy, then I would have also been fine with it.
We had just gotten rid of a first round QB who struggled because our OL sucked for most of his Jets career. IOW, he was "thrown to the wolves". Even the Chiefs who had a damn good team didn't throw Mahomes out there. Douglas and Saleh were trying to prevent the ruination of yet another Jets rookie QB, it wasn't because they "...were afraid he'd get hurt or damage his confidence...".Given the unknown quality of our OL - and the actual fact that our supposedly best OL, Becton, was getting beat like drum by our own pass rush - it wasn't at all "strange" that they handled Zach that way. What was uncommon was not having a more experienced and reliable backup option ready and letting that guy start until the OL and skill players settled in. In hindsight, with the injuries that happened right out of the gate, it was too much to ask of a rookie QB to overcome that hurdle, but Zach survived that and came back stronger so maybe in the long run it will pay off.
Simply another falsehood and/or ignorant assessment. Sure preseason helps but most of the work for a QB is done in practice. Playing him more in preseason would have not changed anything except open him up for injury. Zach got better playing in real-life games and that why is why he will play better next season. If he plays at the same level as his rookie year it will not be because he played his rookie year. If anything it has accelerated his growth which is what we are all hoping for. Sam did not get ruined starting early Sam got ruined because he had to go through Multiple Offense of Coordinators and essentially start over every season. Getting Mono and having a horrible supporting cast did not help either. What Sam proved in Carolina it was Sam that sucked. 1 to year 2. He was also hampered by getting rid of his weapons and again multiple OC's, then got gun shy because of WFH. Sanchez did reach his potential unfortunately he had a propensity to throw pics and you do not last long in NFL turning the ball over. A bigger reason Qbs fail is because of changing coaching staff and offensive philosophy and verbiage. Fields and now Jones will have to start over with a New playbook (Hampering their development) Zach and Trey will be year 2 with the same staff and most of the same weapons. You can extrapolate that they sucked because they started early but you would be wrong.
A calendar year removed from a QB competition at BYU and he was ingrained as the unquestioned starter of the NY Jets. Seriously can you imagine that? Summer of 2020 he had to battle to keep his starting job at little BYU. Summer of 2021 and the NFL's NY Jets dont even bother making him compete for their starting job - its handed to him
The biggest failing of the front office regarding Zach Wilsons playing time early in the season was to leave a gaping hole at guard. Van Rotten as a backup thrown into a starting role due to injury would have been understandable but it was inexcusable to pencil him in as a starter and to think Zach is going to light things up. Mike White might not be the second coming of John Elway but there were many times that Zach could have been benched after the second or third Interception of a game to take a breather and learn a thing or two. We had a new offensive scheme and a lot of new / young players that would have benefited from competent play from the quarterback position. I hope the coaches are watching tape from our games this year and learning from their mistakes.
