I don't think the Jets would be in the Elite...I mean, they got trounced by San Diego...And I don't think they're better than Indy, Denver, etc. But people want to bitch about a 3rd round pick for TG? For what? It's a WIN-NOW team. Just go all-out and make the deal if you can. What future does this team have once Favre says GoodBye? Once Favre leaves, this team is going DOWN in the shitter for at least 2 seasons...But I'm more than willing to take the gamble, and obviously the Jets did with Favre... I like Brett Ratliff, but to expect him to be the "future QB" is a bit much.
This is a TERRIBLE idea, proposed by a guy who doesn't know shit about football. TE is perhaps our deepest position and we have plenty of offensive weapons. Think of how average we were on offense the other day - we still put up 26 points and held the ball for over 35 minutes. We are fine.
Tony Gonzalez is one of the best TEs to ever play in the NFL and is a real leader and a class act, but: 1) We don't have the cap space 2) Our offense is very complicated and we are already 1/3 of the way into the season 3) We have Baker, Franks, and Keller 4) We would lose a draft pick 5) We don't use our TEs very much in the passing game if at all 6) We would be giving him a lot of money for something we don't really need All reasons why not to do the trade
We already traded away a great deal of our future [read: draft value] to get Favre and we spent a lot this season on Jenkins. Now he's suggesting that we give up more of it on a deal to try to make a push the Super Bowl for only one season? What happens if we don't win and Favre retires? We're stuck with even less to rebuild with as Favre walks away leaving the QB position in turmoil again and without the full compliment of draft picks to build upon, not to mention the salary that Tannenbaum guaranteed for the next three years to convince Favre to come to New York. So that leaves us with holes to fill, fewer draft picks to utilize, and less cap space with which to do it. Gonzalez's cap number is only around one million this season but it jumps up to four millioin next year. How the hell are we supposed to afford him while paying out Favre, Coles, Pace, Jenkins, Rhodes, and Faneca? If we're looking for any help with the trade deadline we should be trying to upgrade our saftey problem or a position that Schotty actualy lets Favre throw to.
No thanks. We should get a proper football player to play safety opposite rhodes first. Then I would rather WR, RG/RT, LB before another End.
This is the point that people aren't getting. This team was constructed to win right now. Not next year, not two years from now. Today. This February. Otherwise, Chad would still be our QB. Here's the thing. If Favre retires after this year, this team is done. Even if we playing the assumption game and believe that Ratliff is the future, it's at least 2 years after this one that he'll need to develop as a starter. At that point, free agency starts biting us in the ass. Keller is going to have a bright future, and people acting like Gonzo is being brought in as a replacement aren't thinking clearly at all. Gonzalez has, maybe, 2-3 years left, if even. Keller will just be maturing at that point. Bringing in Gonzalez has absolutely zero effect on Keller's Jets career. It probably ends Franks' and Baker's though. As for learning, we're talking about a Pro-Bowl veteran. Not unlike our QB. Everyone was concerned Favre couldn't learn the playbook in time for the season. Well, I'd say he's done a pretty good job. Gonzalez would probably get the first week off to learn the blocking schemes. Week 2 he'd play, but only block, while learning more of the routes. By week 3, and surely by week 4, he'd be an integral part of the passing attack. That's only the halfway point of the season, when we actually start playing teams that deserve to be in the NFL again. As for our TEs not being thrown to, there's probably a good reason for that which everyone is ignoring. They all suck. Keller is the only one who shows flashes. Baker's skills have declined and he was average in the first place, and Franks can't hold on to the ball. Besides, why would you throw to Baker or Franks when you have Coles, Cotchery, and the threat of Stuckey?
ESPN radio said Gonzalez to the Giants for Sinorice Moss and either a 4th or 5th pick is just about a done deal...
the posts in this thread display a typical jets mentality of inferiority...the jets cant just be too good so lets all be opposed to bringing in arguably the best TE of all time...what people on this board obviously fail to realize is that brett favre is a 1 year QB for this team...whats the point in bringing this guy in if we arent going to do everything possible to win now....not next year or the year after...NOW....what is it you people don't understand... who is the QB of the future waiting in the wings?? thats right we don't have one...wake up and smell the coffee...this team is built to win NOW and there is no valid reason not to attempt to bring in gonzalez for that mere fact...
