If you think Williams, Uzomah, and Allie-Coz haven’t been able to unlock their potential, you don’t play DFS. All of them produced when given the opportunity. That being said id be down to draft 2 TEs.
The poster who is on the highest of high horses bases his actual football opinions on daily fantasy sports. You couldn’t script it any better.
This sentiment is why this is the make or break summer for Joe Douglas. For as much good as he’s done, I feel like there are a lot of things he hasn’t realized. Your exact point with tight ends, bargain bin shopping in free agency because making a splash is frowned upon, not making trades when there are top-tier talent available at skill positions… there are a few different pathways to success but a lot of them involve having the best players at the important positions. He has a chance to do it at receiver if he is wise enough to trade for one. He unfortunately doesn’t have an option at tight end anymore so he has to nail it in the draft. Basically he has a lot of resources to go and get the exact players we need. If those players don’t want to play for us then you can’t blame Douglas but if he doesn’t go after a guy like Cooper or even make a call on Metcalf… It’s same old Jets trying to convince themselves and the fans that you don’t actually need stars to win.
please explain to me how else I was supposed to take “if you don’t think of these guys have unlocked their potential then you don’t play DFS”? You are basically saying that one time Mo Alie Cox caught three passes for 18 yards and a touchdown and he was a great flex option or a cheap tight end. Therefore if given a bigger role he’ll definitely become a go-to guy. One of us is certainly simplistic.
I will type slower so maybe you can process. When given the opportunity, Williams and Uzmoah produced. Uz caught 49 of 63 targets - he makes plays. Even with an offense featuring 3 star WR, when given the opportunity, he produced. Williams caught 16 of 17 targets before he was injured. I mention DFS because I watch every football game. Someone who thinks these guys don’t have potential - or rather we’d need to unlock some otherwise unrealized potential - obviously doesn’t. Maybe you take the time to look at stats, but you don’t watch the games.
I'm not a fan of Everett at all. He almost cost the Rams a berth in the SB with dropped passes. I don't want Kroft back, either. He can't stay healthy and can't catch.
I don't think it's a matter of trying to unlock some potential. Plain and simple, the Jets need upgrades at the TE position with reliable vets. Outside of Howard, they are reliable vets who would be upgrades over the stiffs we had this past year. They aren't ideal, and aren't what I hoped for, but at least they would be an improvement. Add a TE or two in the draft, and at least we'd have an NFL-level TE corps.
Come on, you know as well as I that the Jets' roster was pure shit when JD was hired. There were more holes than there were answers, and he had to get the cap straightened out. Even with his trade downs and trades, there haven't been enough draft picks to address all of our needs. I'm certain that he will add at least two, if not three TEs this offseason. If not, then I will join you in criticizing JD.
Looking at his stats, Everett only had 3 drops all season so I'm not super concerned with him on that front. I think paring him with someone like McBride via the draft would be a great fit and give us some versatility at the TE position that we haven't had in awhile. Not a huge fan of Kroft either but I think he would be a solid TE3/depth for the right price.
Being stingy in FA is definitely better than being spendy but JD has taken it way too far. It doesn't matter if you didn't pay much if it results in GVR and a bunch of other guys who don't move the needle or move it in the wrong direction. Half this board was pulling their hair out last FA period about how conservatively JD was addressing the OL and lo and behold the OL was a huge problem to start the season.
Conservatively? He made a big push for Thuney, got Moses for a steal and landed LDT when he saw there was a problem.
He definitely inherited a barren cupboard but it's also totally fair to criticize his inability to shore up some of the weak spots quickly enough. We've dumped a huge amount of draft resources into the OL and it's still just OK, with some huge question marks still at RG and RT (Becton). Our picks from rounds 2-4 in 2020 were: Mims Davis Zuniga Perine Morgan Clark 5/6 of those guys are so bad they're off the team or can't even get on the field, and the one who does play only does so because of injuries to our starting safeties. Now, you don't expect to get a lot of studs in rounds 2-4 but to get 0? While having 6 picks in those rounds? Not good.
Making a big push counts for nothing. We also didn't get LDT until more than halfway through the season, the damage was already done at that point. Tons of Jets fans knew GVR was going to be a huge problem even before the season started. Our own GM didn't admit it until after 9 games.
I guess the good news is that even if I lined up at TE, it would be an upgrade so it will be hard to get worse than we were last year.
Yea I'm definitely not clamoring for Douglas to overpay to get our guys but at least pretend like you have some interest in getting the best talent available when they are available. Unless it's all just part of his cool hand Luke routine. But at some point you have to pull the trigger when the gun is loaded with excess ammo.
There's reason for hope. This is a deep draft for TEs. There are a lot of solid vet TEs who will be available in FA. It may not be ideal or what we hoped for, but it will certainly be better. I see no way possible it could be worse
That was his first draft, and I believe that he was drafting with a lot of input from Gase, so I'm willing to give him a mulligan on that draft. He certainly did well last year, getting AVT, Elijah Moore and MC with picks from rounds 2-4 (and 1st). If he has a similar draft this year (sans the trade up), we will be in very good shape.
Where did you see how many drops Everett (or any player) had? I've often wondered that. I guess I must have been lucky as I saw 2 of his 3 drops in the few times I saw the Rams play. I'll take your word on him, so he would be fine as the starter. I'd rather sign Everett and draft two TEs than bring Kroft back. I didn't mention it before, but I no longer want McBride. He's just too slow. He wouldn't be able to get down the seam unless Zach had 5-6 seconds to wait. I think he'll be limited to blocking, checkdowns, and shorter routes. I'd rather have Ruckert or Dulcich. I don't know how Everett blocks, but if we had Maxx Williams and Ruckert, we'd have two TEs who are excellent blockers and who also can catch. I don't know about Williams' speed, but I know that Ruckert's is fine.
