I cannot understand at all why Robert Saleh sat his many of his starters in that game. It makes zero sense to me. You just had to switch to a backup QB, every starter needs to adjust to that, time is at a premium and you give them the day off??? Baltimore rolls in here week 1, no surprises for them, same QB for 4 years, we havent even had the same QB for 4 weeks. I suspect they will be more prepared
Streveler vs White is fun to talk about but in the grand scheme of things probably has no impact on the team. Neither will even dress for a game. Many teams don't even carry 3 QBs. I get with Zack out we will carry 3 for a few games but wouldn't be surprised if we drop to just 2 QBs when Zack returns, especially if Flacco looks decent. If we do keep 3, Streveler would be better running the scout team in practice during the week as he's far more of a run threat than White, and look at the QBs we face this year. I can't see Mike White playing the role of Josh Allen or Lamar. In the unlikely event that we DO have to start our 3rd QB, Streveler provides more of a spark that all teams feed off. His crazy play style gets other offensive players stooked, especially if he comes in part way through a game. But then again MW had his 405 game, something that NO Jets QB has done since Vinny.
Yeah I agree with you on these points. Knight seemed to be more impressive throughout camp. Coleman I’m just not sure about at this point. Speaking of, what happened to that RB last year, Walter? He had some spark… I haven’t heard a peep from Martin. He’s a guy who analytically had a good year but not the results.
That statement took some guts. Saleh has been a fantastic "front man" and spokesman for the team, but as far as coaching I have yet to see much over (gulp) Gase. I know, that's blasphemy..... I expect we will see that step taken this season, but we are waiting. Otherwise Saleh's best traits over Gase has been a more pleasing character on " One Jets Drive" and in press conferences, with great catch phrases and motivational messages on shirts. It's hard to know if players are being coached-up when the talent level was so poor. That holds true for Saleh last season as well as his predecessor, who's name I don't want to type a third time.
Yeah, my fear with Saleh is that the organization fell in love with his personality because of how polar opposite it is from Gase's. I think that might've caused them to overlook some legitimate red flags - like how bad the 49ers defense was without Nick Bosa even when Saleh was there.
Finally got to watch the game last night. Was expecting to see what everyone was saying about White and Streveler, but didn't. I think a lot of people just tuned out the fact that this wasn't our starters out there, or that they were playing Atlanta's starters in the first half. We were sloppy in the first half, no doubt, and that was a problem. Too many penalties and missed assignments. But that's not the team were going into week 1 with either. Especially the o-line who was missing assignments and getting beat nearly every play. How bad were they? Breece Hall had 4 carries for 1 yard, and I think our backs got a total of 11 yards in the first half. We worry about an injury on the line affecting Zach's development, yet we didn't have a single OL starter playing that game. The only thing in our favor was Atlanta has arguably the worst d-line in the league. If last years Zach would have been in there he would have gotten sacked several times because he holds the ball too long. White played decent under the circumstances. Not a star, but he did the Mike White thing. Get rid of the ball fast to the open guy, avoid sacks and turnovers. Seemed like Wilson was the only WR that could separate most plays. In White's first two drives our team failed to convert a 3rd and 1 on the ground, and the third drive was killed by penalties. His final drive in the half he played well, highlighted by a 34 yarder to Mims. But again we couldn't convert a 3rd and short because we had no rushing game, and settled for a FG. My only complaint is he played the first drive of the second half against backups and looked pretty limp. Streveler is fun to watch but its clear why he's on his 4th team in nine months. He is full of bad habits, from bailing on the pocket too soon, to not reading the defense properly, and making bad decisions under pressure. If Streveler would have started that game it would have been a disaster. Our season isn't against one of the worst teams 2nd and 3rd string. I think a lot of people here are Bryce Petty'ing him. The coaches see these guys everyday and I'll trust who they choose.
It would be interesting to see Streveler against better competition with better tools at his disposal. I think you may be right... but he is fun to watch.
White completed 70% on Monday night running with the 2's against Atlanta's starters. Not a lot of yardage but hit some tight windows. Streveler looked okay against guys who will be stocking shelves in a couple of weeks. He's fun to watch but he won't be on the 53 unless both Flacco and White drop dead, OR another team's QB comes up lame and JD takes advantage with a White trade.
I agree with your post probably the most. I too want Mims to stay in fact I rather they cut Corey Davis now stop wasting everyone's time. I also like Marshall. Like the pick when they made it last year. The guy seems like he beats his opponent all of the time. Shepherd does nothing but gets dumb penalties. He needs to go back to Canada. Salah talks a good game just like Herm did with minimal results. I don't know but it seems like the Jets are just not ready on game day. Slow out the box offensively could be LaFleur too. His playcalling just seems lacking. I know its not Douglas as he is getting good young talent on this roster. Jets just seems a step slow maybe their all gas needs some premium additive. The saving grace might be Flacco. If he can bring that leadership and his SB status to this team get them motivated it might make it work. Now if the Jets jump out to a 2-0 record does Saleh go back to Wilson or ride with Joe?
Why run a scheme that the players you selected can not execute? As CC and others, I think, mentioned, that is coaching 101. This HC said he would put players in position to succeed, maybe he meant as a motivional speaker because so far that platitude is falling flat. The only reason they are 2-0 in PS is because our scrubs were better then the other teams, period. The same problem(S) that occurred last year (on O and D) have been apparent in PS so that tells me that the CS - not the players since we have an infusion of talent now- is not what we hoped. After 50 + years of watching this team and all of the terrible coaches, IMHO I think we may have a problem boys. I hope for all of our sanity that I am wrong but as SOJ(AZ) I hope for the best but am - unfortunately - expecting the worst.
Older guys are Brett Ratliff'ing him... Well said though. He's not exactly a pure thrower. That matters to me. Mike White every so often can fire the football. I tend to like that. That said, Streveler has made this pre season enjoyable, so I'm glad he's around.
Agreed. If there is a real competition for the 3rd QB the coaches will play Streveler before White in the next game.
I don’t think Strevelers even got a faint shot in hell at making the team. He’s living his 15 min of fame though and that’s pretty cool
Agree with you, and would add that what the Jets need from Flacco, more than inspiration and motivation, is execution from the QB position. Jets could surprise people if Joe can deliver some consistency at QB.
