1. Terrible? When Barlow would run into the line of scrimage and the play would end, only to see Chad have to pass on the next down. This happened too many times. The difference between Barlow and Blaylock is that Blaylock did it every chance he got. But from what I saw, they both stunk! 2. I don't know if Curtis can run anymore. If his knees were okay, of course he would have done better than these guys did. Curtis Martin, healthy, is one of the best running backs ever - a Hall of Famer. These guys don't come close!
Barlow was not as bad as you say. It's only his 2nd game actually playing and he's been alright. Barlow constantly had to fight for yardage when this OLine could not get any penetration, Barlow would get 2-3 yards out of obsolutely nothing. He's got a burst, and was not terrible. Even with a healthy Martin, the Jets still have a horrible run game. Martin can't hit the hole like he once did, and with this OLine, their are no holes!
I was just thinking about this last week. Whenever I see a position abbreviation I don't read it/say it as letters. I always say the position. If I see "RB Derrick Blaylock" I read it as "running back Derrick Blaylock." I read the first post here and was like, "An running back? What the hell?'
Ha, I noticed the same thing. Oddly enough, however, it's not that way with quarterback. A lot of the time I'll read QB as QB.
Barlow has had his moments. The biggest problems IMO with Barlow is two fold, 1. He's not good enough to be a #1 back on a good team 2. While you need 2 RBs in the NFL now, he's making a lot of money for a #2
You're correct that our run blocking was brutal today, but we do need a runningback. Blaylock, Barlow, Houston, and Washington shoud not be starting NFL runningbacks.
You can't judge guys that were not given a chance to play, meaning Houston and Washington. Late round players, in the past, have turned out to be gems. Now, Blaylock and Barlow have been in the league long enough to know a little something about them. IMO, Blaylock has never amounted to anything. But the same cannot be said about Barlow. I didn't like his game today, but I thought he looked good in the first game. I haven't given up on him. I'm hoping he turns out to be an exceptional RB... He has the potential for that.
I think we need to be realistic about the O-line. They basically started 3 rookies yesterday in Ferguson, Mangold and Katnick. This is not to say things would have been tremendously better had Kendall played either. However, given the woes of the offensive line last year, I will take this line over the 2005 version in a heart beat. It is going to take some time for the line to develop. In the interim, there is going to be growing pains...especially against the better d-lines in the league like NE has. As for Barlow, I thought he ran hard...I like him much more than Blaylock who really is only a 3rd down / situational back. The one thing I would like to add is comment I heard from an announcer (forgot who he was) from a game last week regarding the run. To paraphrase, he said that the key factor on offense was the quantity of runs (no matter how good/bad) and the quality of passes. I agree with that. I think the Jets run game will break through within the next several weeks. Now that Chad has demonstrated he can hurt opposing defenses with the pass, this should help open the run game up by pushing cheating safeties back out of the box.
were reaching right now folks you guys can blame it on the oline if you want.. but none of rbs are special they take whats given hell besides barlow none of them can run out of a arm tackle. not one of these guys have looked back for a cutback lane which i saw a few times yesterday they just run straight ahead hole or no hole blaylock especially guy runs right into our oline
Well, considering he is among the all-time leaders in career rushes it makes perfect sense he would be high atop such a list. I betcha Barry Sanders is the all-time leader in such a category.
Whats wrong with the phrase? I agreed AND disagreed. I agreed that our offensive line got pushed around, I disagreed that the problem isn't running back.
Look at it this way, until we get a running game, Chad will continue to run up big stats because there are no other options. Unfortunately, coupled with a lack of a PR or a running game, Chad's numbers won't mean squat in the big picture. We need time guys. Not some quick fix unless you can roll back time and get Barry Sanders in his prime..
Okay. I agree with the first post in the thread. I would not have posted in this thread if I hadn't been thinking about the "RB", "WR", TE" thing. I learned with this thread that some people say the initials.
