we should see more or leon and cedric.....barlow played alright today, but the o-line run blocking has been attrocious
I agree with going with houston but Leon won't solve anything hes also a small get one hand on him hes down back. Leon needs a good O'line so he can get into the open field which is where he is best. We need Houston and Barlow types to just grind it out and break some tackles with our Oline. I think we are done with high round draft picks on our OL we need some skill posistion players in the draft high now. We can patch up the oline with FA's and low draft picks now that we have 2 anchors in Brick and Mangold.
I'm in favor of throwing Houston back there to see what he can do... Also, how many run plays did he call to the outside? I think none...
The run blocking sucks. We knew that was going to be the case. Hell, that was the biggest knock on Brick going into the draft. No surprises here. Barlow is the ONLY running back on the roster right now who is worth SQUAT. Leon and Cedric are TOO SMALL. I don't know why people are so infatuated with these guys. Not to mention Leon CANNOT BLOCK. But I guess no one cares how many times Penny is laying on his ass, even though he's shown that the Jets are a vastly better team when he is in. Barlow had 3 YPC today. Why isn't he getting all the touches? Makes no sense to me. If he gets 3 on first down, and again on third, then we only need Chad to manage a measly FOUR yards on a second down passing play. Plus, the more you get 3 yards on a carry, the more the opposing D has to respect it. That opens the passing game up, and allows Penny another second in the pocket. I don't know why this is all such rocket science around here.
To start the game it was Ferguson- Katnik- Mangold- Moore- Clement. Katnik was struggling in pass protection and midway through the 2nd qtr and for rest of the game it was.. Ferguson-Jones- Mangold- Moore- Clement. When Jones came in..the pass protection got alil better..but the running games continued to struggle. I think the left side will be ok...Ferguson and Jones are both pretty athletic...I see more of a hole on the right side. Moore continually gets pushed backwards...and Clement isn't aggressive enough despite his size. Part of the problem w/ the running game is indeed the OL...But that doesnt mean this offseason we shouldnt do everything in our power to upgrade the RB position w/ an elite franchise type back.
You always look to upgrade every position. however, some souls on this site believe if we had a big name RB all of a sudden, we'd rush like Atlanta did today...
Ya know what Blaylock is? It was the NFL equivelant to Dick Vermeil saying to Herm "Look dude, I know she's fat, has a giant brace for her teeth and snorts like a pig when she eats, but please just do me a favor and take my sister to the prom" Herm agreed. He just lost his side and hide, Lamont.
i was thinking this past week - even before the game today - if we get 6-8 wins, i wouldn't be surprised if the first pick is a stud OL. while our OL has improved since last year, it's obvious we need more to give us a chance each week. cheers
We're set at LT and C though, and Gs and RTs can generally be gotten later in the draft. I'm not saying wait for garbage day picks like Hermway, but a very good RT can be gotten in the 3rd easily, and Gs can be gotten in the 4the or 5th. 1st round we might want to take a good hard look at an NT, 2nd round an RB, third RT, 4th G, and then go for depth in some other positions after that. But its WAY too early to think of the draft now.
We have the worst running backs in our conference, it's not even close. Outside of the Pats we have the second best QB in our conference right now and are as good as the Dolphins and the Bills on both sides of the ball except at RB. If we had a good back it would make a huge difference. Blaylock isn't elusive and he is soft. He is a guy who should be getting no more than 3 or 4carries every couple of weeks. Just as aside, Barry Sanders and Jim Brown in their prime would have given our team a running attack today.
Barlow is by far our best rb and should be getting 80% of our carries at least. Blaylock is awful. No not awful. Worse than awful.
Who are you kidding? Even with a good back, we can't block and we can't put pressure on opposing QBs. We don't have the same talent/aren't as good as those teams on both sides of the ball otherwise. We have a better QB, and that's what gives us the chance to beat them, but we're still a very weak team compared to most of our conference. Heck, I don't even know if we'd beat the Raiders if they start Andrew Walter.
You vastly over rate the league if you think the other two teams in our division are anywhere near the Pats. They are far closer to the Titans in class than the Pats and we are every bit as good on both sides of the ball as both the Bills and the Fish. It is our RB that is the major diffeciency. We did a very good job pass blocking today against one of the most talented front 7 in the league. When Jones came in at guard in the second half Pennington had plenty of time to pass.
it seems like when houston runs he gets at least 3 yards or more every carry... hes such a tough runner.
Line or no line, both of our running backs did terrible today. Blaylock should not be in a Jets uniform. Luckily Chad and the receivers had another solid game, or we wouldn't have gotten anywhere. It shows you just how valuable C-Mart was to our team. I hope Houston gets a chance next game.
What exactly made Barlow "terrible"? And do you really think Martin would be doing any better? Their are absolutely no holes with this line, Barlow is doing it all on adredaline and 2nd effort. How many times was the play stopped at the LOS and he gets 2 or 3 yards out of it. If you're gonna sit here and tell me a 33 year old Curtis Martin would be doing any better behind this OLine, I want some of your Hydro.
I'm going to agree and disagree with you. Our o-line sucked at run blocking for sure... they seem to get overpowered and are never able to open a hole... BUT... they really need to stop giving the ball to Blaylock... REALLY. Blaylock gets to the line and dances, whereas Barlow gets to the line and tries to go straight through it. We need a replacement at starting RB, but I believe at least for now we can find that RB in-house.
