I love the CS bashing. I think its hilarious. Let me give you a quick prediction. Fans will run Schotty out of town, he will land with a team, and come back to the Meadowlands, and his team will lay waste to the Jets 44-10 or something. Then the fans on this board and everywhere else will say Eff Schotty - why didn't he call games like that for us. ....cause he didn't have the personnel to do it with. Yes the CS was partially to blame, but most of the blame falls on MS. Piss poor reads, staring down BE, throwing to BE on double and triple coverage? C'mon now. Not that I am here to defend Schott but you can't tell me another OC would have done much better. (E.g. replace Hackett with Heimerdinger and go play with Brooks Bollinger.
Fine and good... And with a Veteran QB and some weapons I have no doubt Schotty could lay waste to a lot of teams... But, If he walks into the Meadowlands on a cold windy day with a rookie QB that barely played in college, never played in the rain and never saw cold weather before, has a lead and is running the ball at will and then decides to throw the ball around.... I'll again point to him and his coaching staff and Claim that they just had one of the WORST COACHED GAMES I"VE EVER SEEN. Given the circumstances, Hackett might be a better OC for Sanchez right now... RUN THE BALL WITH A ROOKIE IN HIS 1ST COLD WEATHER GAME... Can it be more simple than that??????????
I don't see the INTs as the CS fault. I only saw 2 of them and one he threw into triple coverage right to the defender. That's all on Interceptchez. What IS the CS fault is the insane amount of penalties this team is racking up. The mounting injuries is the CS fault to some degree as well. Do they even have a S&C staff? Sketchy play calling, bad clock management. And here's the sad part: I don't think Ryan gives a shit about anything not called Defense.
The problem is, Schotty has never demonstrated the ability not to get 'cute'. The first drive of that game yesterday, the drive that you want to build up a rhythm, give confidence to your QB and establish a running offense, this stupid dickwad had 4 players in motion into a 3-wide formation and one of our players (Hartsock?) jumped. If there is a time during a day with conditions like yesterday that you want to start out vanilla, it's then. Brian Schottenheimer thinks he is far more intelligent than he actually is. I'm so sick of this guy.
What will be next weeks excuse when we lose to the Raiders? I didn't not expect to win every game this years, but the last 2 losses looked like the SOJ!!! This team could of had 1st place all to it's self last week. They can't handle being in first. Now the Pats are first again. And F the Pats for putting up 59 points against the Titans..
And before that he defeated some guy named Brady or something like that who -I've heard- is a little bit more experienced than he is... that proves nothing. --- The thing is that the argument of "Sanchez sucked yesterday" is kind of obvious, we all knew it was something highly likely to happen in that weather before the game, and something we all knew for sure by the second half. The question is WHY it seems that the CS didn't saw it or didn't do anything about it before it was a total failure. It's not like he'll never be able to learn to play on this conditions, maybe yesterday seemed like a good day to let him learn a bit (since the game was somehow controlled), but the moment they realised he was not ready yet, they should have stopped playing like that. I remember the game against the pats as a good example of good CS/MS: They started playing with MS, he fumbled once and then they took the ball away from him but let him on the field. They protected him. Then, by second half, when it was time to start worrying about the offense, they give it another shot and the kid was ready then. After a couple of succesful passing series, they still played conservative, relying on defense and -really- low yard gaining running plays. That was good playcalling with a rookie QB, because you don't know if a rookie QB will have a great day (because of his talent) or a totally awful day (because of his inexperience). But the second you know for sure is a sucking day, you take away the car keys from him and let him on the pitch to make the most of it.
Mr. Ryan's team is showing some troubling signs, that put one in mind of the Herm Edwards/Mangini era - -For a coach that talks all kinds of stuff about defensive toughness, his players miss A TON of tackles. The tackling in the last 2 games has been atrocious. -Team seems to be getting more undisciplined as time goes on. 14 penalties yesterday - false starts, too many men on the field, etc. Get a hold of your team, coach. -The play calling just makes you scratch your head. On one drive, after TJ's second big run, where he had 140 yards already, they handed off to him on the first play and he picked up 6. HE THEN WAS ON THE SIDELINE FOR THE NEXT 5 PLAYS. I was at the game and I increduously counted the plays that he stood on the sidelines. The drive stalled, of course. And TJ was running the ball down the field, when they call a deep pass against the wind, that gets picked off. More head scratching. -Did Dustin Keller's wife leave him, or was he just thinking of something else yesterday? That too shows discipline problems. -Sanchez seems like a different player. Can't hit an open receiver suddenly. Questions will be raised about how he can play in cold weather. -Buffalo QBs had all day to throw. Any half way decent QB will rip this D to shreds. Mr. Ryan better re-examine his D schemes. Rookie HC, Rookie QB, and it looks like it. Hey, I picked the team for 5 wins, so this is not totally surprising. But there are troubling trends. One good thing that will come of this - Mr. Ryan and company will shut their mouths and hopefully get to work.
I agree...there's also some brain-lock indecisiveness that maybe we should expect from a rookie headcoach, but is still surprising. Last week vs. Miami failing to use his TO, and this week keeping Sanchez in the game when he was clearly spiraling down. I'm hoping there IS some intellect behind this guy's personality and that he's not just another Buddy Ryan. To put it another way, I'm hoping he's not just a great coordinator without the chops to lead an entire squad.
This loss falls on both the coaching staff and the QB. Ryan and Schottenheimer didn't put Sanchez in a position to succeed, and as a result Sanchez played like the most inexperienced starter in football. Which he is. What's more, clearly the coaching staff hasn't instilled the kind of discipline necessary to play at the NFL's highest levels. In OT the Jets took crippling penalties in the 3 situations that you never want to take them in a sudden death situation (the kickoff, backed up in your own zone, and on the fringe of field goal range.) I'm not one of the Jets fans crying and declaring the season over, but this team is in serious trouble. We're about to learn a lot about Rex Ryan's character.
Excellent point ,seeing five picks , I knew everyone on here would be bashing Rex/Shotty. They look at all the running yards and say we should have just run run run. But we did end up with lots of 3rd downs and more than 5/6 yards. The Jets had to pass , but it was just a bad day for Sanchez , he forced passes and was definitely affected by the weather conditions.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. That was Sanchez's first look at cold and wet and windy. Now, if he's smart - which he seems to be - he understands that you don't throw the ball around lightly in that kind of weather the way he was doing yesterday. He understands that the checkdown is your friend on passing downs in that situation and he understands that games like that will often turn into low-scoring affairs won near the end. The odds are pretty good that he didn't really know any of the above headed into the game. Now he should have an inkling. There is an issue we need to deal with, and that's his propensity to throw picks. It's pretty clear at this point that his ego is ahead of his arm early in his career and it's also clear that the coaching staff is not sitting on that particularly hard. They need to sit on it some because you cannot throw picks at the rate he is and maintain the confidence of your teammates or your self-confidence. The coaching staff needs to work with him heavily on recognition in the secondary, particularly with the safeties, and they need to dial back the play-calling some and keep it safe at that level. There's going to be a point where everything clearly starts to click but we're not there yet. One other point: what we've seen with all the picks recently could have been happening earlier in the season - the opposition dropped like 4 INT's in the first 3 games. It's up to the coaching staff to work this out of Sanchez and it's up to him to make sure the picks come down. Personally I think Schotty should go. I don't want him training another Chad at this point and I don't like how Clemens (or Sanchez) developed under him. The Jets should make Callahan the OC and let him get the running game going - that's his forte.
Interceptions are almost always the QB's fault. All of the Interceptions that Sanchez threw were his fault. Schotty's playcalling sucked big time. But don't blame Schotty for Sanchez's poor execution and poor decision making. Yesterday we saw stupid play calling combined with poor execution.
I agree Keller looked like he wanted to anywhere but on the field yesterday- horrible game by him. The questions about Sanchez and weather will come up , but if I'm not mistaken 4 of his 5 picks yesterday were going into the wind. The winds at the meadowlands , can be very tricky . I've seen many quality QB's make "silly" passes ( including Brady, Peyton, Eli, Marino, Favre etc...) there. Now , I'm not saying yesterdays bad performance can be solely attributed to the weather , but it definitely had an impact.
It would be wonderful if he absorbed all of that knowledge yesterday. Like I said, it ain't got cold yet. SoCal really has alot to learn so if its gonna be trial by fire, then lets stop pretending this team is going anywhere anytime soon. SoCal not only has to learn stuff he should have learned while playing 4 full seasons at USC, he'll also have to learn stuff as a rooke in the NFL too. That's one steep learning curve and after looking in his face yesterday, I'm not so sure this kid has the intestinal fortitude to climb it near term. I agree with Schotty walking the plank after this season. He's ready to run his own show his way and by ignoring the obvious yesterday, he proved to me that he's not about to listen to anyone but himself. I think he's been a OC too long and is now proving to be more of a liability than an asset to Ryan.
As a long time, and I mean long time suffering Phins fan, I have to say that I agree with the OP 100000%. Even though I was rooting for the Jets to lose, I have to admit that I was shocked that went away from the running game in the 2nd half. They were picking up 5-7 yards per rush and were manhandling the Bills. One thing I love about the Parcells stamp on the Phins, and about Sparano is that he is setting up Henne to win. By dominating at the point of attack and establishing a smashmouth football team with the Wildcat, Henne is in prime position to succeed. I almost felt bad for Sanchez (key word ALMOST). For all the crap Ryan has spewed, he sure put his QB in a lose lose situation by not pounding the rock.
Schotty would only make good play calls if he was coaching pro bowlers. Coach within the talent you have! I'm tired of people saying he's outsmarting himself. It's stupid to run these kinds of plays after the 2nd interception. That doesn't seem all that smart to me. But someone needs to sit Sanchez down and tell him not to throw in triple coverage.
How about the fact that his receivers were Braylon which he has known for 10 days, Clowny, who was deactivated for the Tennessee game because he doesn't seem to get it and Keller who seems lost. Without #2 and #3 receiver, why throw the ball this many times? Needed more screens to Leon, circle routes, all the stuff Parcells did to make Vinny a Probowl QB instead of an interception machine. They need to get Keller involve early, Braylon on slants and inside digs and get some decent easy throws early in the game for a kid who hasn't ever played in this type of weather. But it is easier to just throw him to the wolves and then slam him for the loss. I believe we would have a road grading Oline if they didn't have to set in the stance for 30 seconds on every snap. Chad snapped the ball at 1-2 sec, Favre the same and now Sanchez. It is all the BS motion and shifting and false snaps.
I'm not sure you can blame the coaching staff when a QB throws 5 interceptions. Was it Mangini's fault last year when Favre was so terrible in week 17.
I think you can fellow Fin fan It was obvious that Sanchez was rattled. It was obvious that the Jets were GASHING the Bills on the ground. No brainer. Keep running on 1st and 2nd down, to either setup a 3rd and short or continue to gain chunks of yardage. They already broke two long runs... All they needed was one more to win the game, and if they continued to run it would have happened.
