This fan base can't handle one bad loss, let alone a rebuilding period. No, we aren't rebuilding, our personnel hasn't changed all that much since last year. We are relying on some rookies to step up and contribute however, so I can see where the idea comes from.
I agree with what you're saying in principal, the problem is that our current GM has shown virtually no ability to draft well enough to restock our roster, add to that, his penchant for trading picks to move up in the draft to chase marginal talent, and you have a recipe for prolonged mediocrity.
Two offseasons of drafting D-Lineman first round as well as a 3rd round NT tells me that the Jets wanted to solidify their front and win games with the defensive front 7. Games are won and lost in the trenches and while that obviously goes both ways, the plan is that defense will be #1 priority followed by the rest. Without a stout d-line then the rest won't work as well as it could. The d-line isn't where we want it to be but the core of the d-line are all first and second year players. Pouha and DeVito are there to be veteran leadership and to hold the fort until the core group is ready to dominate. Linebackers will be next along with hopefully some more o-line. Really if they found a stud LG then Ferguson should get back to the level he played at with Faneca and Howard has shown capable so far so I doubt they address RT immediately. Finally... the Jets need a playmaker on offense. Hill might eventually become that guy but he's still young. The fact that we have him leads me to believe that running back will get serious consideration as a top pick soon... if the Jets can land a home run hitter at RB they won't be in bad shape at all going into next season. So there you have it... RB, LG, and a LB or two and the Jets will be in good shape. A lot of that depends on how they do the contracts for current guys on the roster and thats hard to comment on right now. I'm expecting them to bring back Revis and Landry and to obviously dump Scott, Pace, Smith, and a bunch of other wastes of cap space.
Call it what you want, but I think they will get rid of a somewhat large # of high priced players over the next 2 seasons - after this season and after next season.
people don't wanna hear the truth. they see a young brash good looking kid at the helm of a bad ship and they wanna rush to judgement and make some loud easy declarative statement and falsely attribute failure to the man at the face of the team. the truth is much more complicated.
Just curious, what in the hell does being being a brash good looking kid have to do with effectively playing QB in the NFL? That's some tabloid sh*t right there, nothing to do with football.
your post is totally true and i agree. however to clarify even with money coming off the books next year we are still in major cap hell.
Every team is always trying to improve and some need to improve more than others. Due to aging and retirements, the Jets need to improve a lot but don't have a lot of cap room to do so. Because of aging players and expensive contracts, I think the Jets will have a pretty high turnover over the next 2 offseasons. The biggest question is whether QB will be one of the positions that turns over.
During preseason, I started a thread asking whether the Jets were going in to rebuilding mode and I got pummeled for it.
I'm somewhat hesitant about the cap hell part because it's seemed in the past that the Jets were going into cap hell and somehow Tannenbaum had prepared for it and gotten through it. If there's anything Tannenbaum does well its manage the cap. So, I guess we'll have to see it before I actually believe it.
Kyle Arrington is the worst corner in the NFL thus far in 2012. That's not hyperbole. He's the very bottom player. QB's have a 158.0 rating throwing at him, 82% catch rate, 3 TDs. Devin McCourty is no better than Kyle Wilson. He just happens to start. Stevan Ridley is a product of his offense. Haven't we learned that from Woodhead and The Lawfirm by now? Mallett is a total question mark. That list is two awesome tight ends, Mayo, and some guys that SHOULD be good, but aren't necessarily yet, kinda like Hill.
Cap Hell is a stretch. We will have a tough cap year in 2013 in which we're gonna eat a lot of dead money, looking excellent for 2014.
It's also fairly reasonable that Woody Johnson has a peg placed on 2014 due to the Super Bowl coming to town. Then we might truly see a balls to the wall attempt at buying a Super Bowl.
This team won't be able to legitimately compete for a championship, or even an AFC East title, until 2014. Maybe 2015. After this train wreck of a 6-10 season, there will be many cuts and many signings we should make that we won't be able to make due to past decisions. Embrace the disaster. It's coming.
Yes in 2013 for sure. We are in total cap hell next year. 2014 is another story, but that's also 2 years away. also I like the rebuilding theory...but part of me wonders if we are rebuilding by design or if we just plain suck. i'm having a hard time telling the difference right now.
Just plain suck. This team was not in a rebuilding mode entering the season. They're trying to pry open a "championship door" that was shut last season.
