Clemens sucks. Please don't use him in the same sentence as Manning. You lose credibility with crap like that
If youre going to be mad, dont hate towards Clemens. Granted, he didnt play that great of a game and he is a work in progress, but the play calling and coaching decisions were downright terrible. Mangina is the biggest pu$$y ive ever seen. His conservativeness puts him right about where Hackett is. Ive never seen a coach in my life (especially one whose team is 3-9), coach as scared as he does. Numerous times on 4th down we should of went for it and he punts every friggin time. This guy is a clown and i cant wait till his ass gets fired. He can go do those stupid ass commercials for another team.
http://www.databasefootball.com/players/playerlog.htm?yr=1998&ilkid=MANNIPEY01 I'm not comparing him to Manning. I'm just showing you evidence that you can't judge a qb in his first season. It's way to early to say if he can play or not. Look at Mannings rookie season game log.
The coaching HAS been horrific this year, this game is the culmination of horrificness, if that's even a word.
Manning was a starter day 1 of his NFL career Clemens was on the bench for a year and a half. I know you're not comparing them directly, but he's got a LONG way to go. The Vince Young-like completion percentage doesn't help.
The point is he shows signs of doing good things. He's made plenty of mistakes but every young qb makes mistakes. You guys better get on the Clemens bangwangon cause he's going to be the guy.
I'm more convinced that Chad Pennington can come back and lead the Jets to an undefeated season next year and the Super Bowl.
Funny stat- Clemens has been sacked 23 times in 5 starts Over a full season, he'd be on pace to challenge Carr's sack record. Clemens is averaging 4.8 sacks a game Pennington averaged 2.1 sacks a game The O-line didn't get magically worse after Chad was benched. For all of Clemens mobility, he's not really avoiding pass-rushers any more effectively than Chad. He has to improve on his blitz reads or he's not going to get anywhere.
Give the guy a chance. I knew this shit would happen when he doesn't play good all the time. I think it's been the play calling from thew beginning. He's got an great arm, when they firgure how to use Jones in the back field and give them good plays to throw down the field, maybe things will start to work. Until next year people...
Two points - neither of which make me comfortable. First, there are so many teams doom themselves for a five-year contract term by tortuous quarterbacks they draft. Let's look at Kyle Boller, for example. The Ravens dumped an unspectacular, but efficient, Trent Dilfer. I would too. But, they then traded a first round pick to draft Kyle Boller, who gave hope for the future, but never delivered. And so, despite maintaining a stout defense, the Ravens parley a Superbowl win into a decade of mediocrity. What if they draft Ben Roethlisberger? Could they have won two or even three Superbowls? Contrast all that with the Detroit Lions. They wasted a full contract term with Joey Harrington. Likewise the Browns and Tim Couch. Likewise the Texans and David Carr. Likewise the Bears and Rex Grossman. Likewise the Giants and Eli. . . oh. . . wait. . . . maybe it's too early. My point is that I think teams should be more willing to dump a quarterback and try someone new. Try to catch lightening in a bottle. I'm not sure where I stand on this, by the way. The history of the NFL shows us both. Elway, McNair, Manning -quartebacks who have matured on the job vs. Brady, Roesthlisberger, Romo - qiarterbacks who showed "it" from their first snap. Part of me thinks that, if you don't see "it" in the first half-dozen games, you may never. The other half of me wants to see someone mature in the job. My second point is more ominous. I wonder to myself whether this ownership and management regime would hang onto this coaching staff if only to avoid an admission of defeat to a division rival. I'm not willing to go that far to say that this coaching staff won't get us there - yet. I am, however, willing to ask the question whether or not we'll admit when the day comes that we should cut our losses - if at all.
The word is still out on Clemens. He has shown signs of being a good qb, but he occassionally makes bad throws. Flacco is projected to be taken in the 2nd or 3rd round, and it might not hurt to draft someone like that.
The key thing with Clemens is that he was a second round pick. If he does become a bust which is completely unknown at this point it won't kill the cap the way a qb taken in the top 10 of the draft would. Worst case scenario he becomes a backup with a tolerable number against the cap. I'm sure Pennington will be traded or cut and I'm sure the Jets will look at options for players to compete with KC. I do believe Clemens gets the entire 2008 season. If by the end of the season he hasn't improved then they will have to make a decision. Your second point, I really feel it's to early to judge Mangini and company. Last year everyone wanted to extend them for life, this year they want them run out of that building. These guys are young, they've made mistakes, we knew they had a learning curve. Last year was lucky, this year is unlucky, next year they have to make their own luck. I know it's partially their fault but it's tough for any coaching staff to look good when their lines are so awful.
