I wouldn't mind Pettigrew at all. All the Baker comparisons are ridiculous, as is the constant use of 'blocking TE'. The whole point of Pettigrew possibly going in the 1st round is because he's more than simply a blocking TE; Supposedly the best blocking TE BTW. The scouts say he can be a weapon in the passing game as well. The only thing worse has been the logic behind how the Jets have a bad history with TE's in the 1st, as if that's a valid reason to ignore a player. How about we based whether or not we draft the guy, on the guy, and not some draft pick that failed years ago?
im still not sure about this pick.. weighing the options though.. it could be the best choice.. we could trade up fo sanchez ( giving that he drops out of the top 5), he take a risk with DHB or an even BIGGER risk with Freeman. Or we go with a solid TE that is a proven stud and sure up our TE position for several seasons to come.. I just feel that outside of the first round, there aren't any of those homerun hitters. But the problem about the players in this years draft is that most of them are risks and the 17th pick is either too late or too early.. if we did draft Petti, i would LOVE if we could trade down a few spots and still draft him and add maybe a 3rd or 4th pick.. but that might be too risky... still think that I would rather Moreno. We are lookin for a blocking TE to help our running game.. but are we even sure we have the RB to have a good runnin game.. I guess we'll just have to wait a couple more days.. thats when we will definitely know what the Jets will do..
I know you didn't actually say this, but in a round-about way, you're already claiming this kid is going to be a Hall of Fame TE. That's a pretty strong statement considering how many TE's have made it there. Someone tell Tanny to get the Lions on the phone. We can't let this HOF prospect slip by us.
I remember a time when they drafted an athletically gifted receiving tightend by the name of Johnny Mitchell. The next year they followed up by drafting a "complete" skill set TE by the name of Kyle Brady. hmy: :shit:
Makes me wonder if the commissioner fears for his safety every year when he reads the Jet's first round pick. He knows no matter what he says, the fan reaction isn't going to be pretty!
Brady was like an extra offensive lineman out there. We just thought we were gatting a tougher receiver as well Pettigrew is starting to grow on me I could live with that
There is about as much chance that the Jets would draft this guy as there is they would draft a safety in the first round and that is none.
You're taking me out of context. Point being, even the BEST make mistakes (ala Montana). I was referring to Montana's HOF status. However, I will agree that who ever made that particular highlight reel is a moron. Bottom line, the guy is a player. Rex wants an efficient, controlling offense. Right now, this offense is riddled with question marks. Our best asset is our offensive line, but even they can't take on 8 men in the box. Whoever gets the nod at QB is going to be put to the test very early on, 8 men in the box, corner blitzes, you name it. Our 5 beasts up front can't get it done alone. That being said, I feel Pettigrew is the most likely pick at this spot because: - Dominant blocker (pass and run) - In essence, we add a 6th lineman to the line. - Natural hands, sheds coverage effectively - This guy is better than Chris Baker. He's not a burner after the catch, but he's got very good hands, and he can get open. - Opens up the offense - This added asset on offense will open Keller/Washington up (our biggest break away weapons). If not, Pettigrew becomes an efficient target of his own. He's also an excellent end zone target (I know it didn't happen in college, but he has that potential. This could also help our WR's underneath, Cotchery will become good friends with the double team without a threat on the other side. I know, potential is just that...potential..Then again, everyone in this draft has potential). Furthermore, this will eliminate stacking the box. - Inexperienced QB's best friend - Extra protection, and an excellent source of check down. - Filling a HUGE hole - Let's not forget, there are basically NO TE's on this team. Yeah, it can be filled later in the draft, but none of the other TE's in this draft have this guys ability. What other option at 17? - QB- I'll take a pass on Freeman, way to inconsistent. If our QBs suck this year, next years draft class is a lot better. (Stafford/Sanchez off the board) - WR- Crabtree and Maclin will be gone by this pick. DHB and gang have lots of question marks. There is also a really good chance one of these guys will be around in the 2nd. - RB- I like Moreno and Wells. However, we still have Jones and Washington. And this team is built to win now, not have a crowded backfield. Options like McCoy and Brown in later rounds. A nice downhill banger would be a nice compliment to Jones/Washington. I won't go into defense. That's a whole different argument, and I have a few guys I like there as well. Again, just my opinion. So dice me up if you wish.
This is a good post in explaning why you think we could very well go TE with the first. I have a pretty good idea of how the Draft will unfold but in my mind taking a player like Moreno in the first will make a world of sense for us (and be more worth it in the long run) than picking up Pettigrew. Thomas Jones will not be here next year guaranteed. There's a small chance Pettigrew could very well be found at the end of the first round/early second if we wanted to trade back into the 1st after trading down if we can just hold off. I know the Falcons will probably look to Draft Pettigrew if he's available which is a risk I'm willing to take. Bear Pascoe (which we may have a chance to get because he's a 2nd day pick) can fill in the role of a decent/good blocking TE. He's also better at reading defenses better and finding the soft spots, and has shown to be a nice target in the endzone. What's great about him is I don't think he's projected to go before the 3rd round. That's good value for a TE that doesn't necessarily stretch defenses (neither does Pettigrew) and will be required to run block a lot and catch a few passes here and there. If this still doesn't satisfy you, we can always sign Billy Bajema to a 1-year contract (who's shown he can run block well) and even Bubba Franks and have them go at it at Training Camp. TE is a need right now but nothing we can't address with a late pick and a few FA signings plain and simple. Let's try to find a game-changer with that 17th pick.
I have to agree on Moreno. As much as I want Pettigrew, and I want to win this season... Jones is a goner for sure..AND, Moreno's tape is unreal. That guys moves are slick!
Well first off Jets Fans have to stop booing at the Draft. We have to support our team and being that negative about an addition to the team just makes us look bad in general. I think if we add Pettigew it would be a very high percentage pick for us in regards to production. He would make an imediate impact on O-line and would help our young QBS considerably. Also if we are running two TE sets then it could be a nightmare to cover with Keller being so explosive and Pettigew a big target that could roll through some LBs. If anything he is just another weapon that also adds protection for our Qb and running game. Also its not like TE is not a glaring need because it is. Keller was a great pick last year and I am not against Pettigew being our first pick.
