There's a reason you put a rookie QB on the bench

If about 1500 yards, a shade under 70% CMP, 16 TDs to 6 INTs in 5 games and leading the league in QBR is ass, may I please have some of that ass on the Jets please? The internet is funny. LOL

    I get it

But what are you going to say when young Zach gets badly injured like Joe Burrow?

You think Wilson likes getting beat up physically and mentally every week?

We ruin this kid it will be SOJs

I encourage you to read the following data which does not support your theory.

    This was in 2015:

I looked at quarterbacks drafted in the first round from 1996-2015, and compared their total rookie year starts to their average wins accrued per year as a professional starter.

    Here are the results:

As demonstrated by the blue trend line, more starts trended heavily towards more NFL success. Quarterbacks who started all 16 games as a rookie had an average wins per year rate of 7.0. Quarterbacks who started less than 16 games averaged a wins per year rate of 3.8.

As shown in the chart above, Philip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers were the major outliers. The rest of the quarterbacks in the study to start four games or less as a rookie have gone on to average 2.2 wins per year in the NFL.

Of the top five quarterbacks in the study by wins per year average, four of them started all 16 games as a rookie (Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Cam Newton), the other started 13 (Ben Roethlisberger).

This trend has been even stronger in recent history. If we cut the group down to quarterbacks drafted from 2008-2015, the impact is all the more apparent:

There are still some high start count rookies that have busted in the past decade (Sanchez, Gabbert, Griffin, Weeden), but the difference between this chart and the previous one is the lack of quarterbacks with low start counts balancing the chart. There has been no Rodgers, Rivers, Donovan McNabb or Eli Manning over the past decade. The most successful first round quarterback with less than 12 rookie year starts over the eight-year span studied above was Josh Freeman (though it looks like Jared Goff is on the way to breaking that mold).

Think even beyond the first round. Guys like Russell Wilson, Derek Carr, and Dak Prescott all seized 16-game starting roles in their rookie years and are franchise centerpieces to this day. The league is trending towards throwing young signal callers right into the fire - and for the most part, the numbers are highly in favor of that philosophy.

Burrow and Herbert showed promise from the start ,and are building on it yr 2. Wilson is from a small program and it is showing. Yes he has a great arm and can make great plays, but seems to struggle with the routine throws. With his size he needs to be an accurate passer to be selected where he was and he needs to work on this. Right now Wilson is being shown up by 2nd and 3rd string qbs

Further to all of this, since week 1 of 2008 when Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco took snaps as a rookie QB, 39 QBs have been taken in round 1. Only THREE did not start a game in their rookie year, Patrick Mahomes, Jake Locker, and Jordan Love.

Mahomes started the last game of his rookie season as KC had secured their playoff seeding.

Are you saying the NFL is a one size fits all organization, or maybe should each guy be looked at as an individual where some are benefitted most by being thrown directly into the fire and some can reach their highest level by watching how the game is different in the NFL than it was at the mediocre level they have competed at previously?

Yeah I know I read the same GangGreenNation article that you didn't link with the weird largely unmarked graphs.

That doesn't convince me that sitting Wilson, Lance and Fields wasn't the correct move and slow-rolling young raw quarterbacks isn't the right move.

Do you have any data on quarterbacks that perform as poorly as it looks like Wilson will in his rookie year and how they fared thereafter in their NFL careers?

Got it. I'll put it in the same file as Darnold, Smith and all the other successes the NY Jets have produced. Let me know when to see the fine results.

I had to save and link the graphs individually which is why I didn't link the article. Still have trouble posting links and photos and stuff on this forum

That’s a good question. If we have to go as far back as Peyton, then we’re fucked.

If Wilson continues to play like this all season then it will be pretty likely that he isn't the guy. It'll still be too early to say for sure but it definitely won't bode well.

We need to hope he shows some improvement as the season progresses. To me it seems like the early season overthrow interceptions got to his head and he's now overcompensating by missing everyone short. On one hand it shows he's actively trying to correct his mistakes but he's overcompensating so far. Let's hope he finds the middle ground.
