The Jets said they would 'Do whatever it takes to get Cowher'. Sounds like no plan B to me. And in the end, they failed to do whatever it takes.
Putting the cart before the horse in bringing in a starting QB weeks before the season starts to sell seat licenses. Putting the cart before the horse is firing a head coach to bring in a name to sell seat licenses without having a backup plan when you fail again. In fact, there is no horse. Just a jackass that inherited a band-aid empire.
I liked Woody a lot bettter when he used to not pay attention. to me it seems like he has two major flaws: 1-He's in love with Brett Favre to the detriment of of the franchise. 2-He seems to respond to the Joe Beningo/retard/knee-jerk reaction segment of the fanbase--"Go get Favre!", "Fire the coach!", without thinking it through.
Jesus Christ, guys. If you think Eric Mangini can't be successful as your head coach, you have to let him go. I'm sure Woody and Tanny have a short list of guys they are going to go after, but to say they don't have a plan because Cowher turned them down is ridiculous. They probably knew they had an outside shot at best to land him anyway. It's funny how this board has gotten all sympathetic for Mangini now that he's gone. If you ask me, the guy had the most talent in the division and one of the easiest records in football. He had a playoff spot locked up if he could beat 3 of the following teams down the stretch: Buffalo, 49ers, Miami, San Fran, & Seatle. He couldn't make in game adjustments and the supposed "defensive genius" took the defense in the wrong direction by relying on coverage instead of pressure. Woody and Tanny had a plan - it was to get rid of an ineffective coach and bring in the most qualified candidate they could find to replace him. Let them do their job. Good riddance to Mangini and I can't wait to see who his replacement is.
No upgrade factor? How do you know that? How do you know that there aren't dozens of guys with more experience than Mangini at actually putting in a D or an O with more experience in dealing with NFL players? How do you know there aren't 20 even 50 guys out there who couldn't do better than Mangini in terms of organization, player relations, press and fan relations, player development, scheme, execution, trust, etc., etc., etc. Who was Bill Parcells or Walsh, or Lombardi or BB before the plung was taken the first time? The League is going to be involoved in making sure we get a good football man just like they did with the Giants when George Young was brought in. Woody loves Tannenbaum that could be a problem but Tannenbaum who is great friends with Mangini didn't like the job he was doing and tossed him. That tells you something.
If you think this board is "sympathetic" towards Mangini, you've evidently visited a pirated, knockoff TGG.com. I would say outside of perhaps 5 posters at most, this board was ready for a change. Letting that go for now, this Owner/GM stated publically that they would do "whatever it took" to get Cowher. That doesn't imply that there's a real b-list of guys but I'm sure they could pull one out of their asses on short notice. If Woody and Tanny had a plan, it wasn't very well thought out and played through and unless we do something really out of character and get lucky for once, this franchise is neck deep in shit for a long time to come.
Obviously they wanted Cowher but they knew Mangini wasn't there guy and it was right to unload him and let him look for a job and let the Jets start the process ASAP.
I don't argue that logic for a minute WB and you know I was all for the execution. But the timing perhaps was off just a bit on this entire thing don't you think? Perhaps they should have had a "gentleman's agreement" ala Herm and Carl Peterson in place before canning Mangini? If they had contacted Cowher on a backchannel and learned his requirements beforehand, alot of this confusion could have been avoided publically and the Owner/GM would have come out of this as heroes. They still might, but history isn't on the Jets side here. It rarely if ever is..
It's not about firing or not firing Mangini. But if you're going to do it, clean house. We've had this same copycat regime, first with Bradway and Tanny at asst. GM, then with Tanny at GM and Bradway at 'advisor' (asst GM), then Tanny with a new Asst GM and Bradway as head road scout. It's the same regime with puzzle pieces in different places, all the time under Woody. Wipe the slate clean and start anew. We need new blood to break the cycle of perpetual mediocrity. And it seems like they almost did it until Cowher decided he didn't want anything to do with Woody's jersey-selling prize pig. Woody is the problem.
This is where I take a different way of thinking. I agree Mangini was not the answer. However, firing him now sends a bad message to potential candidates. They sit back and see the Jets as a dysfunctional organization without a clear plan for winning. They just fired a guy after a winning season and 5 more wins than the year before. We as fans are upset over the collapse, but to a guy like Cowher firing the coach was not a sound move. Second, they are saddled with a 40 year old quarterback to start their program which makes no sense at all. For these reasons, they should have allowed Mangini one more year to get it right and then moved on.
Do you think this team has enough talent to win? If you do, than Tanny and the front office have done their job.
Man the season has begun for Jets fans - The Offseason, where we get to figure out how to fix the mess. Can't wait to start planning my draft party.
I don't think Spags or Schotty Sr. taking over the Jets would be an eipc failure. You could certainly do worse than those guys in my opinion.... Truth be told, this isn't a good off-season to be coach searching period. There's more teams in need of experienced coaching this year than there is availability on the market. I thought Cowher in NY would be a done deal, but I'd look for Spags or Schotty Sr if Shanahan isn't the one. Just my opinion....
I had no problem with Mangini, I never liked having a young staff around a guy they wanted to develop as a long term answer as HC and build the program around. I thought we should have brought in a top paid staff instead they tried to build the entire staff and the players lost confidence when things went a little south on them and it all crashed and burned. Letting Mangini go and keeping the Coordinators seems ass backwards but in a way they did it to keep the door open in case they end up with Shotty's father, which may end up happening. As far as QB we have two young QB's on the roster one who was highly regarded out of college and the other who was more of a project but looks like he has enough upside to maybe be an NFL Franchise QB? I don't think we are saddled with anything. We are a team that still needs to add a lot of talent to be a true contender. We are behind the Dolphins and NE in our own division and several other clubs out of the division in terms of over all talent. We lack a true No. 1 back who can move the chains, a RT and TE who can block in the running game and a No. 1 WR who can stretch the field and our lack of speed on D showed up big time down the stretch. We never consistently established the run or stopped it on D and the lack of speed on both sides of the ball couldn't compensate for that. You add the turnovers by the QB and you have a team that is a crap shoot to win against any NFL quality team week to week which is what we were.
Well how do I know? I don't know with 100% certainty, but with the track record of this organization, what evidence should lead me to believe otherwise? Should we just assume that after almost a decade of ownership and questionable moves, suddenly the FO has their shit together? How do you know they're going to pick the right guy? How do you know Mangini wouldn't have had more success with new coordinators? How does anyone know anything? All we have is history to go on, and quite frankly the history isn't all that spectacular.
Man, we had the best RB in the conference The problem actually was that we lost against the crap teams, not against the good ones.
What I'm saying is, what was this major change of heart in 16 hours that went from "we'll spend some time evaluating" to "bitch, step up off my dick and get out" Did the ghost of playoffs past, present and future visit Woody in his sleep? Who knows, but it stinks of blown call, to me. I would have been fine with 1 more year of Mangini, even though I feel he lost his team down the stretch. He's young and learning and MAYBE he figured out the lost element in the off season. That being said, if they had a plan and a good reason for firing him immediately, to go after someone that was clearly an upgrade, I'm ok with that. But, here we are looking at people that aren't "clearly" upgrades. It's just as much of a gamble as giving Mangini one more year, except now they have to reintroduce another system to this fucking team. Maybe I'm just a retard, but that seems like pure idiocy to me.
