I would like Leonhard... i think with him we can wait and see if we can develop Elam and potentially Lowery into good Safeties while playing Rhodes and Leonhard.
I agree with both points (solid special teams player and special teams is important). When B. Smith's contract expires, however, I would not resign him for much more than the league minimum. He is not a strong WR. He comes behind Stuckey and Clowny, in my opinion, holding on as the number five WR. My problem with B. Smith (or W. Wright) is that both are one-dimensional and each needs to develop into a WR that can be relied upon.
Lack of football knowledge...?!?!?! If u release Kassell, Elam, Brad and D Coleman, aren't you going go replace them? They going for a little over than the league minimum...Im not saying don't release them, but releasing saves us nothing as far as cap is concerned since new player will make about 400k atleast. As for Baker, he only will be making $2. Why would he want to renegotiate that? How much can you squeeze out of it? 200k? 300K? Thats assuming he is willing to regenotiate/restructure. BTW, your numbers as all cap savings, not cap value/figure.

I understand the numbers are cap savings -- that is the point. If the team needs to find $2 million so that it can sign a high end free agent, it can release Baker. Whether or not releasing Baker makes sense is a different question. The net savings of releasing Baker (and replacing him with a back up TE) may be $1.5 million. I did not suggest that the team release all of the listed players (which did not include Elam). Certain players provide a net savings of $500K (which adds to the pool of available money) and others simply don't belong on the field (i.e.: D. Coleman).
Yes. Pippen's play elevated because of Jordan. Scott's play is elevated because of R. Lewis and T. Suggs. As it stands, signing Scott when the team lacks a Lewis/Suggs is not helpful. Of course, I would love it if Scott turns out to be a superstar. I just don't see it -- at least not at the cost I believe he will want.
Scott would neither be a superstar nor a complete bust. He is a pretty good player, but a lot of his production can be attributed to the guys around him.
I would trust Rex's judgement on this one... I think I would be stunned if B. Scott (that's who we're talking about right?) is not going to be a Jet next year. We're going to need a ILB next to Harris, B. Scott is an ILB... so... I mean who better than a guy that knows the system? I mean, assuming we dn't go for Lewis.
Agreed. Its tough to come by versatile players at that price. In an emergency, he gives a little extra depth at several positions. How many games did we have 3 Qb's on the active roster this past season?

Ray Lewis is not leaving Baltimore. There's no point in even talking about it. He is the heart and soul of that Defense. He will be a Raven for life. The Jets have to get rid of Brett Favre. He can not be the QB of this team moving forward. Go with a younger guy. It doesnt have to be a guy you have on the roster either. A guy like Byron Leftwich would be a good fit in my opinion. He just needs a chance. He has shown that he is a capable starting QB. With Favre retiring that that saves 13 million in cap room. Bring in Leftwich and let him compete with Clemens and Ratliff. Leftwich will come cheap. Cut David Barret and Kenyon Coleman. Barret saves you close to 4 million and Coleman saves you close to 1 million. Thats close to 5 million saved right there. Plus Brett Favres 13 million. Then cut David Bowens. He's a solid player but the Jets wont miss him. Thats another 2 million. Thats about 20 million dollars saved with 4 players. Then you restructure some contracts cut some other dead weight and you also have the salary cap going up. I would love Suggs but I doubt he is going anywhere. I would make my first target either Bart Scott or Karlos Dansby to play 3-4 ILB.
Why on earth would Favre take a 60% paycut? What incentive is there for Favre to do that? If Favre decides to return, he will be paid the full $13 million. Of course, it is possible that Tannenbaum restructures the contract (assuming Favre is amenable because of the non-monetary value, i.e.: bringing in a star player to help elevate this team to Super Bowl contender).
If he really wants to play and have a shot at winning he would take a cut and restructure over 2 or 3 years. It seems like Tanny will almost have to force this condition if he does want to return.
