Another poor week for me but earlier performances were enough to just about secure me a front page finish, 19th in the end. Congrats to statjeff who won with an average of just over 10 points a week.
Now that the final results are in, in honor of my second victory in four years my wife and I decided to have a little celebration to acknowledge the awesome power of statistics and the scientific method.
I finished tied for 3rd! technically I should be listed as the first person in third place, because GOW is the tiebreaker, but for some reason it's sorting alphabetically.
Not sure why it matters, but okay: Week 1: You guessed right 10 of 16. 10 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 11 total points. Week 2: You guessed right 9 of 16. 9 points + 0 bonus points + 0 GOW points = 9 total points. Week 3: You guessed right 8 of 16. 8 points + 0 bonus points + 0 GOW points = 8 total points. Week 4: You guessed right 8 of 14. 8 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 9 total points. Week 5: You guessed right 6 of 14. 6 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 7 total points. Week 6: You guessed right 11 of 14. 11 points + 1 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 13 total points. Week 7: You guessed right 8 of 14. 8 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 9 total points. Week 8: You guessed right 9 of 13. 9 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 10 total points. Week 9: You guessed right 12 of 13. 12 points + 3 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 16 total points. Week 10: You guessed right 8 of 14. 8 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 9 total points. Week 11: You guessed right 12 of 16. 12 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 13 total points. Week 12: You guessed right 11 of 16. 11 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 12 total points. Week 13: You guessed right 11 of 16. 11 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 12 total points. Week 14: You guessed right 13 of 16. 13 points + 1 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 15 total points. Week 15: You guessed right 11 of 16. 11 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 12 total points. Week 16: You guessed right 9 of 16. 9 points + 0 bonus points + 1 GOW points = 10 total points. Week 17: You guessed right 11 of 16. 11 points + 0 bonus points + 0 GOW points = 11 total points. I was only at a 59% success rate in the first half of the season, but was much better (71%) in the second half, for an overall 65% success rate.
I'm interested when you made the adjustment, when you realized the teams who were touted to be contenders, weren't and also when you realized the teams who were supposed to be decent turned out sucking. It looks around week 9 you hit your stride.
Do people pick with the spreads? I usually just pick with my gut and it bought me 27th this year and like 20th last year. I'm going to switch it up.
The more data there are, the easier it is to accurately forecast, so I'm not surprised that I did better in the second half. The weeks that are probably the biggest crapshoots are week 1 (no data) and week 17 (too many games that mean nothing, so the data are misleading).
It isn't, as I finished joint 14th with onefanjet but am listed behind him in the rankings; I beat him on GOW and J comes before O in the alphabet. I assumed that less GOW points put you higher in the rankings as it means you actually predicted more games correctly, but that doesn't work for 3rd place as the guys in 4 and 5 had less GOW points than the guy listed as 3rd. Not sure what the tiebreaker is.
in the rules, GOW is listed as the tiebreaker, meaning more GOW right should have you placed higher. Must be a mistake.
