Nice, hadn't read that on our o-line coach. I have no problem drafting a RT for the future, but we need someone now. Any rookie RT that steps in will go through the normal rookie lumps, that unfortunately we just can't stomach right now. We need a proven RT vet, similar to when we picked up Clements (correct me if I'm wrong) when Mangini took over, or possibly even someone like Woody, if anyone is that serviceable left on the open market/gets cut during TC.
Wayne Hunter would be an adequate backup, but I really do not want him starting. We need to draft a RT regardless of what happens. We need that insurance in case Ferguson also continues to decline. Wasn't Ducasse drafted to be a guard? It'll be funny if it does indeed turn out to be completely Schotty's fault and we have a power house offense next year with virtually the same staff.
Here's the thing: signing Wayne Hunter to the contract he got after 2010 is a firing offense on any rational NFL franchise. Hunter almost singlehandedly destroyed the Jets chance to do anything particularly effective on offense last year. The scheme was subpar, as it was for most of Schotty's tenure. The move to a pass-first offense was ill-conceived given the lack of preparation time for the offensive players. The WR's were mostly new and there was no real deep threat on the roster. Nick Mangold got hurt and exposed the lack of depth on the o-line (also a firing offense). However it was the ineptitude of Wayne Hunter more than any other factor that got Sanchez off on a shaky path all season long. If Tannenbaum was being honest about why the Jets foundered last year he'd have resigned and gone back to the financial side of the business. So instead we have crickets when it comes to Hunter who was the biggest of several very consequential blunders by the Jets last year. It's not exaggerating to say that the Jets path forward was radically altered for the worse by their inability to find an NFL-caliber RT before last season. Sanchez is likely toast at this point and any real hope the Jets had of winning a Super Bowl in this window burns up with him.
Meaning what? They didn't guarantee it so they can cut him or so he can sit on the bench. If that was their plan they would have just replaced him for a lot less. They already have Ducasse at 800k to serve as a backup or starter.
I understand that a simpler system is going to help the line as a unit, that's fairly obvious. However, it wasn't only comedic missed reads that Hunter was blundering on last year, he also had NO foot speed to keep anybody from beating him around the outside...And welcome to the AFC East Mario Williams! The rational guy in me is saying "Its OK, they have a plan for RT and theyre just being patient." But the panicked Superbowl starved Jets fan in me is saying "The fact that theres even a remote possibility of him returning is NAUSEATING!" I wanted them to sign a veteran tackle so that they could draft a tackle day 2 a from a big school to compete for a future spot.
Has anyone signed Vernon Carey? Not that he's a long term solution but he's certainly familiar with Sparano and much better then Hunter.
Why would you say that? If you mean that it's unlikely that a rookie could step in and be a starting-caliber OL, that's probably true, but it's not impossible. If you mean there's no way they draft a promising OL, that I would disagree with. From everything I've read it seems like they should have a shot at some good Olineman if that's what they decide to do. HTML:
There are a few veteran stop gap types including Carey available. The reason they are unsigned appears to be that they are holding out for a starting job and/or they want starting money. At this point in time the Jets appear unwilling to give either of that. The only logical explanation? They want to give Vlad his shot. I'd be curious what Sparano would have to say about Ducasse. Sparano knows OL as well as any talent evaluator in the league..and there is certainly alot to talk about with #62 both good & bad.
I would also consider that teams have told them they are interested but they aren't sure how the draft will shake out. I have to believe that Vlad at some point will make the shift to guard.
Vlad so far has given no indication on the field that he has any ability to warrant him even being on an NFL roster...what makes you think that he will magically turn it around? Big Vlaaad and Hunter must go.
They guaranteed it before he played in 2011. Anything happen between then and now? My point is you don't get your $11 million a year QB carted off on a stretcher, and probably lose your own job in the process, just because you made a bad investment. If you lose 30% on a bad investment you cut your fucking losses, you don't ride it into the ground. The fact that he's owed 2.45 mill means nothing. He can't do the job. And him not being able to do that particular job is extremely dangerous to the future of your season and your organization.
They guaranteed it in February. http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissmith/2012/02/09/jets-make-huge-mistake-keeping-wayne-hunter/ Unless this is just plain wrong.
Brick gave up more sacks and more pressures then the RT. Do you have any concerns about him? I think that REX and Sparano might actually know a bit about football players. i trust their judgement re who they want to play RT. I hope they are right but until fans have more credentails then those two, they have my trust! I do understand that mistakes happen but when two veterans of NFL coaching believe in a player, who am I to undermine them?
Really? Cause he's maybe the second guy I've ever seen peel & anchor Haloti Ngota 1 on 1. The guy has immense talent...his issue is mental.
Once I seen the schedule I said the league wants Tebow in because Super Mario is gonna kill Mark Sanchez be ready for a boatload of holding penalties
Depending on how the draft goes we will be getting a RT in the first three rounds, possible even the 1st. There are a few true RT coming out that would be a big improvement and might still be there in the 3rd. The list below are all guys who played RT in college and are among the top ten overall OTs in the draft. These guys are going to be 2nd-3rd round picks and all are better than Hunter. Bobbie Massie 6-6, 316 5.23 Mississippi Zebrie Sanders 6-5.5, 320 5.41 Florida State Mitchell Schwartz 6-5.3, 318 5.45 California Brandon Mosely 6-5.5, 314 5.21 Auburn Donald Stephenson 6-5.5, 312 4.95 Oklahoma
